After 40 years with the same company and living in the same flat for 40 years, I retired at 57 in 2005. I gave everything I owned away. With six boxes of books and the clothes on my back, I left San Francisco and moved to Chicago. Today, I have a studio apartment overlooking Lake Michigan. I own a bed, a desk, and a bookcase. The highlight of my life today is watching the sun come up over Lake Michigan and the moon at night. Life is wonderful at 76. And so easy to keep clean.
I'm 68. I live in a caravan. I get all my clothes from my friend in whose INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL huge farm garden I have my caravan. I have an income of ZAR 2190 per month plus a small side hustle. I have savings. I 'have' 4 cats. I don't own and never have owned, a car. I have an obsolete but still good camera (Canon Powershot SX60HS) for my bird photography. I have enough books to keep me happy. I have enough bedding to keep my bed warm in winter and cool in Summer. I have a gas bottle and a TINY little camping kettle that sells R500 new and cost me R20 at my local thrift store. Damn' - I have ENOUGH! Oh - did I mention that I am the ONLY person I know who is NOT on chronic medication?
Why you left San Francisco 😮 I will be in Las Vegas in February to run Marathon and will visit for some days San Francisco, I am 68 years and in my youth San Francisco was my dream city, because the summer of love, Hippies and many great bands came from San Francisco 😊 I know all these things have changed and the City changed , have you any advices for a tourist, for me it would be very interesting to hear the opinion of a person who lived in San Francisco for a long time 🤩thanks and best wishes from Germany, btw: you are absolut right and the Video is absolut correct 😊
@@1wiesehoefer1 Thank you for your kind comments. It is a dream city. I moved there in 1964 and lived in the Haight. I was a hippie and I remember the Summer of Love, The Grateful Dead, and Janis Joplin, the parties and the wonderful drugs. But all parties have to end. It has become very expensive and now it is a city of the rich taking care of the rich. While you're in San Francisco, be sure and walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Visit the Haight, North Beach, and Chinatown. Also, visit Alamo Square and see the Painted Ladies. And this is a must: Climb the Filbert Steps to the top of Telegraph Hill. If Coit Tower is open, go inside and checkout the murals. The top of Telegraph Hill is still the best view of the city. Best wishes from a San Franciscan.
I retired in my early 50’s. I am comfortable financially. I have everything I need. I just love a simple quiet life. These are the best years of my life.
I’m 67 and started slowing down 4 years ago during the COVID lockdowns. So that wasn’t exactly voluntarily, but it put me on the right track and now I’m able to enjoy the little joys of life and of being alive! I wish everybody reading this peace, joy and happiness and a perfect health❤🌹🍀
I’m 70 and agree with all of the concepts presented in this video. I spent most of my working life in debt due to wanting things that I didn’t really need and living beyond my means. Always seeming to rush from one thing to the next, not even knowing why I was in a hurry. Now I have a philosophy of life that works for me. My goal is to “Want what I have, not have what I want” I drive older vehicles without payments, cook rather than dining out, and really enjoy the good, simple things in life. Spending more time with friends & family, gardening and observing nature and all its wonders. Better late than never as they say!
That's a beautiful philosophy, and it's inspiring to hear how you've embraced simplicity and found contentment in the things that truly matter. Focusing on what you have rather than chasing after more brings peace and fulfillment. It's never too late to live a life that's in tune with your values. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
Slow life, it’s an excellent narration. I got retired at 56, I took a firm decision, not to go for a job. Now I am in to music, and making my intellectual property rather than physical money for a short period. Now I enjoy sunrise, sounds of nature and of course enjoying freedom. I could care my body and mind with good food, minimal exercise and good sleep. Thank you for reminding ❤
Congrats! You are very, very smart! A family friend of ours retired at age 55, and he is living his best life! His co-workers thought he would return begging for his job, but he is 60 now and doesn't have any regrets! This life is very short and over working ourselves only cause poor health!
@ Absolutely! Simplicity truly is the way. It helps us focus on what truly matters-our health, relationships, and the small joys in life-while freeing us from unnecessary stress and distractions. Thank you for sharing this wonderful perspective! 😊
thank you for the valuable message. I am 61 and recently divorced. I plan to pay off debt of roughly $25,000 and continue working until I’m 67 or 68. I am in a good relationship with a wonderful woman who has a wonderful spirit about her.I think it’s really important to be with somebody who is similar. I was with a narcissist for 37 years and it took its toll. Peace love joy generosity are what I plan to follow.
Last year a beer truck totaled my car. I got a pretty decent settlement, but I've had a really hard time getting motivated to buy a new one. I basically only used it twice a week, and now I'm fine taking public transportation or Lyft. Just because I've always had a car is not a good argument for buying a new one. And just because I have the money doesn't mean I should spend it.
Thank you for sharing your experience! It’s great that you’re taking the time to reflect on what truly fits your lifestyle now. It’s a smart decision to prioritize what works for you rather than feeling pressured by past habits or financial situations. Sometimes, less really is more. A vehicle is perhaps the worst investment you could make always needing cleaning, maintenance, attention in some way a lot of idle money just sitting there and wasting your time as well.

Downsizing can be a powerful step toward clarity and peace, especially when caring for a loved one. Wishing you strength and fulfillment as you continue this journey.
It’s great that we are all different. I can’t take my money with and I’m in my 70s. So I love travelling and cruise holidays. I love buying a new car every 3 years and new technologies. My new virtual reality head set gives me so much joy and pleasure. I love nice clothes and shoes and eating out in nice restaurants. So spending less is not for me. My friend in her 90s just had a new bathroom and walk in shower fitted. It looks amazing and worth the spend. I don’t want to leave my inheritance for others to spend. Go well all.
When we spend for ourselves it gives us joy and we feel happy. When we give for others it touches our soul. Just try once. It is a heaven one would not like to leave.
This is a new concept. But seem quite useful.I am going to superannuate this year from the office. Thanks for the guidance given in the video, which will help me to pursue a quiet life in the ensuring golden years.
I will be retiring next week, and soon afterward, I will be able to file for social security disability due to medical issues. I am ready to downsize, but I'm not quite ready to sell my already downsized home. I enjoyed this video.
An empty home is infinitely capable. We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want. The more we let go of what we love, the more present our love becomes, until finally we are able to say in all humility, "I am the Tao, the truth, the life." (words of wisdom of Tao Te Ching - Lao-tzu).
I have less but that is still too much. The things I cant let go of are photographs, books and records. I am 77 this week. They all fit in boxes, so you can't really see them.

Ha,ha, good for you 😅,l love it,lm 60 and planning to work for another 5 year 💖
And maybe later on moving back to Poland and eat Polish sweet for the rest of my life
Whatever makes you happy.

Be a consumer of free natural things like walking in the sun, talking to friends
, Helping other people Etc.
When the train started moving slowly I could see nature at its best and appreciate, through the window. Can i say more of life?

Hi simple life and good think
I will be retiring next week, and soon afterward, I will be able to file for social security disability due to medical issues. I am ready to downsize, but I'm not quite ready to sell my already downsized home. I enjoyed this video.
An empty home is infinitely capable. We shape clay into a pot, but it is the emptiness inside that holds whatever we want. The more we let go of what we love, the more present our love becomes, until finally we are able to say in all humility, "I am the Tao, the truth, the life." (words of wisdom of Tao Te Ching - Lao-tzu).
Very educative ❤
loved!!!!
Good!
i Love this idea of slow living ❤
I have less but that is still too much. The things I cant let go of are photographs, books and records. I am 77 this week. They all fit in boxes, so you can't really see them.
9:28 Good explained
Great advice for a 73 year old!
Muito bom video.
