My husband and I hurt one another in ways that cause most to divorce. Praise God for the graces in the sacraments. We are healed and my husband is my best friend. We've been married 25 years and I would be lost without him.
My husband and I lived it. We lived with infidelity in our marriage. It was torturous I felt like I died inside. He came from a family of divorce. I grew up in an alcoholic home, where my parents stuck it out and I couldn't understand that as a child. But when my husband and I dealt with the infidelity I told him that he doesn't get off that easy. That I committed for life and that it was going to take a lot of counseling before I could learn to trust again. But this June we reached our 40th anniversary and 20 years have passed since that entered Our Lives. I could not imagine life without him. And now that we're in our sixties we look forward at our mortality. And the thought of losing him and having to go on in life alone scares me as I'm sure it scares others also. Jesus tells us to not be afraid but we are sinful humans and it is hard to let go of that. Not that we want to be afraid but that it is hard not to be afraid and to trust fully that we can get through something that horrible. But I pray all the time for God's will to be done I just hope it's my will too.!😊
All these discussions are bringing back memories of my own marriage of 60 years and 8 children! Our marriage wasn't perfect, but we hung together, and my husband became Catholic and a wonderful husband and provider later in life.

Heavy for me especially. My younger sister married an agnostic 30 years ago and her hubby told her 3 days ago that he wants out. She has been crying for 3 days, full of sorrow. Some priests can be very cold. She went to seek advice from her local parish, and her priest said in such a cold manner: “Well, you chose to marry him freely.” Yes, its true. But she was in her twenties and she thought she could convert him one day. But 30 years on, it just didn’t happen although both her children are baptised and her hubby did many times, follow her to mass. Still, such a terribly cold, insensitive thing to say. Praying for all priests to DO JESUS in their vocation, with a heart. Jesus even wept for us.

Greetings from Australia on this sunny Sunday afternoon in the last three weeks of Winter. Thank you Father Mike for praying for all listrning to the podcast. You are in my prayers.
The pain my husband divorcing me to marry another was so painful. It’s still a deep pain years later. I feel like I was just thrown away. I didn’t see it coming.

This gives me hope 🙏 ❤️ tysm...I am meeting my parish priest Tuesday after the Assumption mass to discuss addressing my situation 🙏🙏🙏 that God's will be done
Our church, the Church of Jesus and all the teachings are such a blessing. I am grateful to my parents (I am 64 and they are both gone) for sticking it out! They were surely in love, but they went through some challenging times. -- I am going to go tell my husband how much I love him right now!!
Fr Mike ,you are such a blessing to the Catholic Church ,thank you for explaining our faith for us ,may God be always with you and grant you peace and joy for ever
I have not participated much in this section of the catechism, partly because I haven’t felt physically well. Today I realized it’s also because of my situation. I’m twice divorced & didn’t come into the Church until after my 2nd divorce. However I’d been trying to go through RCIA before I was divorced, but my husband, a lapsed Catholic, quit working on the annulment process. It was a 2nd marriage for both of us. Unbeknownst to me, he was having an affair; I didn’t find this out until shortly before he moved out of our home. I was 57 years old; my 1st marriage was for 21 years, my 2nd 16 years. I decided not to bother with an annulment since I never planned to marry again. Now 10 years later, I’m feel I’m in a limbo state; neither married nor widowed, but somewhere in between. Today I felt the pain of the betrayal & abandonment all over again. I started weeping. I just hurt inside. I know God is with me, but I still feel the pain.🙏💔😭
I have been reading all the comments these last few days and the betrayal, hurt, and pain of so many shows how commitment & loyalty has slowing declined over the generations. I am sorry that you had to go through all of this. A priest told me long ago how an annulment can be healing, even if the person never plans to marry again. One thing I do believe is that no spouse the abuser or the injured party should down the other in front of the children. Children should never be used as weapons. Several of the comments made shows were this was done and much damage occurred by the child and turned them against one of the parents. I know this isn't your case, but I just wanted to state it as it has been on my mind. After hearing the comments here, I would definitely think twice before marrying. I am praying for you and could use your prayers also. ❤🙏🙏🙏🥰
@@dianefrank3688 Of course I pray for you, particularly with my daily rosary & Divine Mercy chaplet.🥰🙏❤️ My 1st husband bad-mouthed me to my kids & received custody. They were 17, 14, &12. They eventually saw I was still their sane stable mom & within a year were all living with me again. I would get them every chance I could or go to his house & fix them dinner because he was gone so much, leaving them on their own. My youngest son once gave me the best compliment after he was grown; he told me how much he appreciated it that I never talked bad about their father.😁
@@TrixRN My God mother; Fran Newman, the woman that emailed for 9-years; and then I finally answered her email; with the homily attached; had a sad story. Her grandmother raised her because: her mother wanted to carouse with the men. Her grandmother raised her well; but when she finished high school; she fell in love with a wife beater. He was so jealous; he tried to burn the house down; with the kids inside. She escaped with no burns; and so also the 5 children. She, then got married again; and again, a narcissist. Her late husband died in her senor years; when she finally returned back to the Catholic church; because: she divorced and remarried; now she was clear. She did not have to stop believing. All she had to do was cross her arms and receive the Eucharist; like I said: you don't have to receive it physically; you can receive it; BY BEING SO IN LOVE WITH JESUS. NO ONE CAN BURN THAT LOVE OUT OF YOU. THAT IS WHY WE HAVE THE OLDEST INSTITUTION; BECAUSE: THE FIRST MARTYRS; DID NOT LET THEM BURN - THEIR FIRST LOVE. From learning YT - exorcists say that when children are born out of wedlock; you unlock generational curses; and this is why the second husband was part of the pattern. When you date; you keep that intimate part of marriage; only for marriage; - because: generational curses do exist. But when we bring everything out on the table; the devil is exposed today; in this very group conversation; and HE MUST LEAVE; IN THE NAME OF THE MOST WONDEROUS, LUSTROUS NAME OF JESUS; WHERE EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW AND TONGUE CONFESS THAT JESUS CHRIST IS LORD. THE LIGHT IS ON THE DEVIL; AND IN THE LIGHT THERE AREN'T ANYMORE GENERATIONAL CURSES ANYMORE. AMEN.
Very difficult teaching which alot of people do not understand and will.not accept. I pray for all so we can totally accept our Lords teaching and continue to follow him.. Thank you Father ❤ God bless you always 🙏 ❤
An intensely difficult concept for many people but when you know the truth, and when you see the depth of love and commitment, the Catholic churches way is the only way, however, hard it is. Praying for everyone.
The Church permits the physical separation of spouses when, for serious reasons, their living together becomes practically impossible, even though there may be hope for their reconciliation. The Church, since she is faithful to Her Lord, can not recognise the union of people who are civilly divorced and remarried. They can not receive sacramental absolution, take Holy Communion, or exercise certain ecclesial responsibilities as long as their situation, which objectively contravenes God’s law, persists. The Church manifests an attentive solicitude towards such couples and encourages them to live a life of faith, prayer, contribute to works of charity, and give a Christian education to their children. We continue to pray for all couples facing tribulation. 🙏
Been there, done that much to my regret - but I most certainly did NOT know the Church teaching on marriage when I was a young woman ~ but perhaps I was not the only one. 😔
Love wants to promise 'forever'. "I want to give you my life - if not forever, then not even today". It's a witness to God in this world. Marriage in the Lord is God's gift. Part of the risk of marriage is to find out later that your spouse is not meant for you, and yet continue in fidelity to the Faith, spouse and children without being divorced. Its best to be reconciled rather than divorced and remarried in sin. 😢
This is a heavy lift for so many people. Prayers for discernment to all those who are considering marriage. Prayers for grace to all those who are in good and faithful marriages. Prayers for forgiveness and reconciliation to all those couples who are in difficult marriages. In Jesus name, AMEN. ❤️🙏❤️
Yes this makes perfect sense - we don't actually experience love until we have struggled to find love in one another and then within the struggle discover how really TOTAL love is when given and received.
Very heavy day indeed. It's a big cross to bear to live a life without a good spouse when you really wanted a good one. All I can say is pay attention to their red flags before you get married, make sure you are mentally stable enough to enter in that commitment, don't unequally yoke yourself, and be willing to be alone for the rest of your life if you can no longer stay together.
Thank you Fr Mike for teaching us. It can be difficult to deal with these subjects, but we need to be informed. Praying for you and your ministry, and for all on BIY and CIY. God Bless. Claire.
I had an old man from our parish share a testimony at our youth group, and he had continually cheated on his wife. But that woman- what a heart like God’s- forgave him even after all that hurt and kept him. He is so unbelievablally thankful that she accepted him even in his sin and brokeness. It is struggle and sin that causes us to hurt others. We are called to be Jesus. And now he and his wife are peacefully together many more years. Marriage is possible. God is good!
Hi everyone! Day 225 is a challenge indeed! May God's grace and mercy find us all, each one in their respective situation. The wind may be blowing but the Lord our God is Lord over the wind. He will see us all through. So, take heart. Thank you, Fr Mike, for proclaiming the truth! Happy Sunday to the CIY Family. 💝
I've always wanted to get married, and while these past few days haven't necessarily changed my mind on it, I do have to admit it's made marriage seem a lot scarier and daunting.
Even the Apostles were scared of Jesus’s teaching on marriage, some of them saying “if this is the case, it’s better to remain celibate”. Yet, Matrimony is a sacrament and confers to the spouses a particular grace that helps them remain faithful to each other and to their vows (with no guarantee that it will be easy; but this applies to all aspects of Christian life).
God bless you in your discernment. Marriage is a great joy and is the normal call by God to build up the Church, but one must be prudent. Hopefully a positive lesson is a better understanding of what to look for in a perspective spouse, and the many discussions needed during your courtship process even before entering an engagement.
This indeed is a heavy teaching Father Mike & not well taught or understood by a great many Catholic Christens! Today, I pray for all my friends at CIY - who find themselves in such situations. I want to tell them “do not be afraid- don’t give up “ . Go to Jesus in prayer He has this amazing love for us that is capable of solving the biggest problems- I personally can attest to this! Good Bless everyone. Go in Peace! 🙏🙏❤️🤗❤️🙏🙏🇨🇦
I’m a recovering divorce lawyer. When I reverted I changed to only doing post divorce cases, usually custody. I always explored whether the client could reconcile with the ex. I only saw it happen once in over 30 years.
Father, may everything that I do this day, whether it be full of joy or pain, whether it be full of love or of grief, I ask that everything I go through today be offered to you just like Jesus offered everything to you. It is in his name we pray. Amen. 8/13/2023.
Challenging command but Father you make it easier by informing us of how difficult it is for priests to speak God’s Truth in such a situation. Blessings and thanks for this.
Glory and Praise be to God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit❣️ Thank you so much Fr. Mike and Ascension. My continued prayers for all, God Bless 🙏🏻
I like Fr Mike’s comment to engaged couples about 3 yr vows, 7 yr vows and forever vows. Hopefully marriage preparation can help the couple exchange fully committed vows that with God’s Grace will last a lifetime. Trials and sickness don’t seem to be a reality when you’re young, healthy and in love. It’s good the Church tries to prepare couples for the storms that come. There are risks to taking these vows.
Father, Mike, that was the clearest explanation (compassionately done) on this topic I've ever heard. I cannot thank you enough for laying things out so clearly and kindly. Wow. Thank you.
It takes three to make Love in Heaven- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It takes three for Heaven to make love to earth- God, Man, and Mary, through whom God became Man. It takes three to make love in the Holy Family-Mary, and Joseph, and the consummation of their love, Jesus. It takes three to make love in hearts-The Lover, the Beloved, and Love. (Venerable Fulton J. Sheen)
Yes you are right about this being a heavy subject I've never married and that's because of seeing how my parents were this really does stir up a lot of pain I guess in the end you just forgive well I really don't know what else to say other than thank you for doing this thank you Father Mike another good session and I'm going to say goodnight to my community and everyone have a wonderful night sleep well sweet dreams God bless and please continue to pray for me amen
Such a great episode about the complications of love and marriage. I pray that everyone finds true love, those who are in marriage never get to experience separation, those who have been separated can reconcile. God bless you all. Thank you so much, Fr. Mike
Father Mike, you have true courage to share these tough lessons which requires unwavering and uncompromising faith. Quite sadly, it seems few have this faith. There's been divorce and remarriages in my family (not me, but others), however unfortunately from what I know they have no apparent regard for the holy and righteous teachings of the Catechism or listening to the counsel of the Church even while some either still go to Church or simply quit or join Protestant congregations. They don't seem to want any support either, but simply go their own way. So, as much as I'd like to share these lessons with them, I simply don't see much openness to it and sense that they wouldn't listen to me. Now I say nothing amid a rebellion and indifference. True, it's sad. I hope not to be found at fault for remaining silent. I did try years ago, but was chastised for doing so until I accepted their disregard. It's been tough to try to remain faithful to the Church while being a struggling sinner and then at once trying to share the Catholic faith among family members who more or less pick and choose what they like and what they reject. At least, you are standing tall for the faith which is a consolation and sign of hope. May Jesus bless you for this.
Please pray for my brother - twice divorced - both times he didn't see it coming. He asked me why God did this to him? I explained as best I could but he's so hurt. Thank you CIY family 🤗
Thanks Fr Mike for your explanation, I’ve never had any one who explained it as you did, even in the marriage guidance course it was insufficient, but pray for me & my children as I don’t know how to process this any more, but hoping & praying God will make me understand, God bless you & your ministry.
Day 225..!!! Total Fidelity in Marriage..! Thank You Lord for getting me here..! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you, Fr. Mike for guiding us through this…!! I CANNOT WAIT to hear you again. I am praying for all of you, 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 especially Fr. Mike and MY priest..!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Please pray for me. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless. ❤❤❤
It’s undeniably hard for us Catholics to accept this part of Church teaching, especially for those who are endeavoring to deepen their faith and only now come to count the cost, but I’m afraid it poses and even bigger obstacle for many of our separated brethren, for whose conversion I continue to pray daily.
Day 225 Praise The Lord O My Soul. Praise THe Lord O My Soul. Life is full of surprises. Be humble DO NOT GIVE ANYTHING for granted because today you can everything and tomorrow you can have nothing at all. Today you can be completely independent and tomorrow you might not be able to do nothing for yourself. Thank you Father MIke Schmitz and Ascencion Press. God bless you. Viva Cristo Rey. We had a wonderful priest at our college newman center who did our prep and marriage (we got married the summer after we graduated college, in 2022.) he communicated it very well to us, but it wasn't new teaching to us.
Thank you Father Mike! God bless you and all in CIY FAMILY,❤ Marriage was intended as a lifelong, faithful union of a man and a woman. What does Jesus say about Divorce? Jesus affirmed (and still affirms) the permanence of the marriage bond. But He also acknowledged that because of the depravity of the human heart, the marriage bond might be severed under certain circumstances. What are those circumstances? That requires us to turn to the "exception clause" of Matthew 19:9: I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.
There is a translation issue here, so it is important to recognize that the Church and Jesus does not teach an "exception clause" for severing a valid marriage. The word “immoral” in that translation of Matthew 19:9 is from the Greek “porneia” which is more precisely translated as “fornicate” or immoral relations prior to marriage. This is distinquished from “adultery” (Greek esothen) or immoral relations after marriage. Jesus is saying that if the couple is fornicating, then they are not in a lawful (valid) marriage, so they are free to enter a valid marriage with another. Unlawful marriages could be close relations, concubines, polygamy, or just living together without a marriage. Jesus did not say that if one of a lawfully married couple commits adultery (esothen), then that is grounds for severing the marriage. Church approved translations such as the New American Bible makes it clearer that the “porneia” in this verse implies the marriage was never valid: Matthew 19:9 “Anyone who divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery.”

Dear Father, you are so blessed to be married to God, who will never be unfaithful, it is very hard being a single parent, but Our Saviour looks out for us - just please don't ever marry again - live with and for Jesus your Heavenly Spouse. God bless
O St Servulus, you desired always to give praise and honor to the Lord our God. Together with you we offer our thanks and praise to the Lord Almighty. O St. Servulus, you were afflicted with palsy from birth yet you never complained about sufferings and cheerfully lived a life devoted to Christ and His word in Holy scripture. On account of your meritorious suffering, I ask for complete healing for Deborah Hamilton and her husband, my sister Alice and all those with cerebral palsy. Intercede for me also to always be cheerful in the Lord. Amen. St Servulus pray for us! Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏❤🙏
August 13, 2023 Do you have 45 seconds to pray for in Purgatory with me? According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory: The Prayer of St. Gertrude Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen
Read 2 Cor 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. Please surrender your suffering to God. At the Eucharistic elevation and before the Blessed Sacrament ask God to deliver you from your condition, if it's His Will and plan.
Especial prayers for all those who are suffering in their marriages. That may be your cross. When you find your cross you have found Jesus! Trust in God's care and His perfect plan for your life.
Jesus, You are welcome in my heart, speak to me and show me You love me. ❤ For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on me and the whole world. Jesus,, in a special way, please activate the guardian angel. Of single people and lead them on the path to holy marriage. Amen❤.🎉🎉🎉💒⛪💒⛪💒⛪💒
I wonder what is the Church teaching regarding if one gets divorced, remarries, and the 2nd wife/husband passes? Can one again go to confession and if they repent again receive the Eucharist?
Yes, the necessary conditions are repentance and committing to living in continence. per (CCC 1650) "the sacrament of Penance can be granted only if they repent of violating the sign of the covenant and ... are committed to living in complete continence." This includes living in continence whether the partner of the civil union is still living or after they have passed.
If fidelity is required, and my spouse was not...I don't understand why the church would not say I could get an annulment if I went thru the process. We got a civil divorce. I did not remarry, but I would have liked to have that marriage annulled in the church.
There has to be something present before you married that prevented one or both of you from entering into a sacramental marriage. Check with a priest and given him all the details, you still might be able to get an annulment. 🙏
@@cyncin7247 Maybe it was just granted on one or the other party not be mature enough or understanding the true nature of marriage. That is weird that the priest cannot tell you on what grounds the annulment was granted.
@@dianefrank3688 This was my situation, and I was granted my annulment on those grounds. @cyncin7247, I agree with another person who posted here...I would go to another priest or deacon. In our archdiocese, they offer annulment writing workshops, where you are guided through the correct words to write on your petition. Maybe you can look into that? My priest also said that because of my husband's infidelity, and his not wanting to reconcile, it shows that he was not sincere about his marriage vows. I hope this helps!
AMEN 🙏.
I am deeply suffering. Please pray for me.
May God protect, comfort and give you peace. Amen.

Praying for you. Healing is a beautiful blessing at any age.
@@dianefrank3688 Of course I pray for you, particularly with my daily rosary & Divine Mercy chaplet.🥰🙏❤️
My 1st husband bad-mouthed me to my kids & received custody.

Thanks Peggy we all need these prayers after hearing these difficult lessions. I am praying for you and all. 🙏🙏🙏

Prayers dor all those who are in a divorced situation. How hard it has to be!
This is a heavy lift for so many people. Prayers for discernment to all those who are considering marriage. Prayers for grace to all those who are in good and faithful marriages. Prayers for forgiveness and reconciliation to all those couples who are in difficult marriages. In Jesus name, AMEN. ❤️🙏❤️
Amen! ❤🙏
Yes this makes perfect sense - we don't actually experience love until we have struggled to find love in one another and then within the struggle discover how really TOTAL love is when given and received.
🙏
Very heavy day indeed. It's a big cross to bear to live a life without a good spouse when you really wanted a good one. All I can say is pay attention to their red flags before you get married, make sure you are mentally stable enough to enter in that commitment, don't unequally yoke yourself, and be willing to be alone for the rest of your life if you can no longer stay together.
As a wayward soul who did not do this and am now learning the hard way---This is very good advice! ❤❤❤

Wow! Marriage is about until death!!! Praying for all married couples. Amazing Day 225, Fr. Mike ❣️
Especially daunting in this day and age!
Praying for you Fr. Mike.🙏
This was excellent.
Thank you.

Wow. Thank you.

Love Does it always last
God is pure Love and it last. Human love is fickle and you can't count on it lasting.
It takes three to make Love in Heaven-
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
It takes three for Heaven to make love to earth-
God, Man, and Mary, through whom God became Man.
It takes three to make love in the Holy Family-Mary, and Joseph, and the consummation of their love, Jesus.
It takes three to make love in hearts-The Lover, the Beloved, and Love.

Praying for you and your extended family. Please pray for me.❤🙏🙏🙏

Thank you Father Mike! God bless you and all in CIY FAMILY,❤
Marriage was intended as a lifelong, faithful union of a man and a woman.
What does Jesus say about Divorce? Jesus affirmed (and still affirms) the permanence of the marriage bond. But He also acknowledged that because of the depravity of the human heart, the marriage bond might be severed under certain circumstances. What are those circumstances? That requires us to turn to the "exception clause" of Matthew 19:9:
I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.
Thank you SuperRuth! May God bless you and all. ❤🙏

You would have to check with a priest, but I think maybe.
Yes, but, as stated above, an annulment is necessary for marriage #1. ❤
@dianefrank3688 I did. Nothing present prior. 😞
@@cyncin7247 Maybe it was just granted on one or the other party not be mature enough or understanding the true nature of marriage. That is weird that the priest cannot tell you on what grounds the annulment was granted.
@@cyncin7247I would go to a different priest but present all the facts. It sounds like a misunderstanding somewhere. ❤
