  • Is the Service Rule Stupid, or Is the Umpire Wrong?
    The Controversy in the Match Between ‪@AnderslindTT‬ and Lin Shidong !
    Hello, I'm EmRatThich.
    In table tennis, the service rule has long been a topic of heated debate. In the recent match between Anders Lind and Lin Shidong, we saw firsthand how controversial and inconsistent the application of the service rule can be. The umpire’s decision in this match was questionable, and it once again highlighted the ambiguity surrounding the service rule in the ITTF regulations.
    In this video, we share the results of the survey launched in june 2024 by french table tennis content creators (Parlons Ping, Tennis2table.com, Attitude Ping, EmRatThitch) ! cf.

    100% agree. This umpire sucks!! If you look at LSD serve, it is clearly a fault service. Anders Lind serve wasn't fault as I see it. Inconsistent umpiring kills the game!!

    The most stupid rule in table tennis today is the heavy weight 2,7 grams of table tennis balls. Need light weight balls.
    In past time, there were not speed blades and rubbers. But now modern blades and rubbers make the current balls to fly so fast.
    The new skyrocketing rising analogous sport of PICKLEBALL is reminding that : The current table tennis version of heavyweight 2.7gram balls is full range stupid. Must immediately, as soon as possible, apply new lightweight balls of 2gram or 2.5gram balls. Heavyweight balls fly too fast because air resistence can not effective slow down them. Too difficult to control heavyweight balls, and extreme difficult to catch fast heavyweight table tennis balls. It is the reason of why almost all table tennis beginers leave out teble tennis or do not want to try playing table tennis. Need atleast few years of training for beginers in order to play amateur table tennis games of heavyweight 2.7gram balls. IT IS THE ALL-TIME HUMAN HISTORY MOST STUPID CONDITION OF SPORT TODAY IN THE AGE OF BUSY LIFE. Who will pay few years of training to reach level of playing basic amateur table tennis games ?
    Look at the new skyrocketing rising sport PICKLEBALL : the Pickleball federation setup very logical scientific standard for pickleball balls : the pickleball balls have very reasonable very lightweight (in the context of distances in pickleball sport), pickleball balls even have holes in ball outer surface to decrease ball weight. All of them lead to the to result : the lightweight pickleball balls fly in air with ENOUGH SLOW SPEED, so that in the distances in pickleball sport, players have enough time to react to apply techniques and tactics and get funs. And because players can succeed to react, Pickleball is very easy for beginers quickly to play basic amateur games to get funs even without any training. Players must succeed to react to balls speed. It is the first condition for sport to be human sport. I see that in many societies today, there are even more commercial PICKLEBALL CLUBS than table tennis clubs. Everyone can easily quickly play amateur pickleball games for funs and communications. While it requires few years of training for beginers to play amateur table tennis games. It is obviously quite clearly stupid in table tennis. It affects table tennis equipment manufacturers (less new beginers, less markets), spectators (waste time to watch so much offgame time of picking up table tennis balls). The most reason : STUPID HEAVY WEIGHT OF CURRENT TABLE TENNIS BALLS.
    So if the international table tennis can not quickly come to consensus of applying new lightweight (2-2.5gram balls) table tennis balls, then TABLE TENNIS SPORT MUST GIVE UP MORE THEIR ROOM TO PICKLEBALL SPORT IN OLYMPICS, in order to regard audience by stopping wasting time of table tennis audience in bored table tennis matches with much offgame time of going picking up balls and less ongame time of playing table tennis. The Olympics must slash more room of table tennis sport, to give more room to pickleball sport in Olympics programs, if the international table tennis society can not quickly reach to consensus of applying new lightweight 2-2.5gram table tennis balls

    this is frustrating. Obviously many people do wrong serves, especially throwing the ball into the racket to increase the spin and/or hiding the ball at contact point. Anders serve was 100% correct. Ok it looks like a cheating action by the chinese 😤

    The Tomahawk was perfectly fine. The rules are derined and precise but not enough enforced by umpires. Other than that they should put the details in their official documents.
    Me being amateur lvl I can tell almost every 3rd serve would be illegal in low league games.

      Your not forced to play Pingpong. If you like pickle ball more so then play that. If A player want's to learn the basics and is motivated it takes two months If you get some training.
      Good post nonetheless. Thx 4 your View.

    Almost all chinese players serve illegal serve... in this case, Lind service is vertical with more than enough toss, despite of Shidongs' toss which is hidden

  • @MsHawflakes
    @MsHawflakes День назад +1

    I believe Lind's alleged fault was that he lifted the ball up instead of tossing the ball, not about hiding the contact or not tossing the ball less than 60 degrees. Also, as Lind pointed out in his own video, to be certain about whether the opponent hid the contact behind his/her arm, head, or body, it had to be seen from the receiver's visual angle, not from the camera's or spectator's, or even the referee's angel. As LSD served very close to his body as he leaned almost parallel to the table and he was doing hook serves, it was very difficult for Lind to see the contact point, even the contact point might not be obstructed by LSD's head or arm. But that is one of the main reasons to do hook serves, which is to hide the contact point even without obstruction.

    • @Belgamor77
      @Belgamor77 6 часов назад

      You are allowed to lift the ball as much as you want, as long as when the ball leaves your hand still goes 6 inches higher than the releasing moment. Clearly, Lind's ball rises way more than 6 inches, and the contact point is visible. Also, the rule states that you can throw the ball with a maximum of 30º to any direction (as long as the contact point is behind the white line of the table), and I can't see Lind's ball going that much to the side or back, unlike LSD's serve, which in my opinion is way more than 30º and apart from that the contact point is not visible. As you stated, hook serves are tricky because if you play left hander vs right hander, the visibility angle is different because where you position yourself to receive the serve.

    If Judges are corrupted, meaning BIAS towards some players no matter what you post until a MAYOR player speaks out.

    I think it's not the rules that need to be adopted it's the possibility to check and decide correctly. You can change the rules however you want to - if the umpire is not able or willing to identity the correctness then it does not matter how obvious the fault or correctness was. Imho with the switch to count to 11 and change of ball diameter from 38mm to 40mm plus celluloid to plastic the serve became more important than before all of these changes. Plus the spin of the serve seems to be easier to read. That's why most of the players developed their serves to the very limits of legal according to the rules and a significant number of players even further to totally illegal serves. In combination with refs that are not able to decide correctly according the rules this is a really toxic combination. Imho hawk eye systems need to be used at high level tournaments to even the most absurd wrong decisions.

    If rules are vague. It will have negative effect on young kids who want to start and in long run effect table tennis popularity.
    In my view vertical angle should not exist.

    It was clear to the opponent but not to the empire on the freehand side. Must have a clear rule like to be able to see the ball from the opponent’s both corners. The cameras can be use for the empires to make the right calls. Hey! Don’t be shy to use high tech.

    It’s obvious they wanted LSD to meet ML in the final and after AL beat their no.1 it was a possibility he was going to beat LSD. Foreign players have been catching China up but they’re still top so doing this makes them look bad.

    If both sides are allowed to serve hiddenly, it is also fair and simple. When a new rule introduce, a drawback also introduced. For a begginer, it is close to impossible to do a legal serve right now, it just discourage new comers to play the game.

      Actually, hidden serves were allowed a long time ago. And Liu Guoliang was famous for his serve s behind his arm. They changed the rules to lessen Chinese players' advantages at that time.
