Our teens teachers just put a clear shoe holder over the door and kids drop their phones into a pouch when entering and then grab them when exiting. Not a single phone was stolen and kids checked messages from parents between classes and at lunch. Doesn't cost 400k.

I sub at the school on a regular basis and the students don't mind because between classes and at lunch they check messages. And in our safety drills, students are allowed to grab their phones. We want our students to have access to their parents and 911 if a shooting event happens.

The issue is that you need something that keeps the device in the kid's hands but prevents them from using it. From the legal/liability aspect, this is the best option.

They make a lot of money selling people fear. It's causing more real widespread damage by kids being distracted in class. I like the idea to have the student put the phones in pouches that than on the wall. They don't need to have them on them all the time. I used to substitute teach preschool to 12th grade. Every classroom at all the different schools all have phones that are sitting on the teacher's desk or on the wall. Also, a lot of schools are working with agencies to install big buttons on the walls throughout the school to press if there is a shooter and then the agency has a direct feed to the school and can work with the police. Do you know how many times the student leaves the ringer on? If you call them when there is a shooter around, your kid is no longer invisible. They are told to go hide and be quiet. You can get your child a bulletproof backpack, or better yet there is a bunch of online school for k through 12. Also, I have seen many students throughout the years pull out their phones and put them under their desks, and keep looking at their crouch. Yes, we see them on their phones when they should be reading or paying attention.
Some schools are a joke when it comes to rules and regulations such as cell phones polices because the students at these schools walk all over the employees due to the lenient discipline policies. The students know they can break the rules and regulations and not get hard consequences, so they basically do whatever they want including being on their phones all day even though they are not allowed to. Because of this, some schools are like the circus, the students are the ring leaders, and the employees are the clowns...
I can testify that since my math department decided to have kids hang up their phones on, what was meant to be a calculator pouch, for the whole class period, they are engaged, paying attention and there are less, a lot less, attitude or behavior issues.
