Also children should pay attention while the teacher is in front of the classroom. It is rude for children to have out their cell phones by scrolling down on social media that’s how it is rude. Our younger generation is teaching us wrong information.
Of course the students aren't going to like it. But a lot of times, students don't know what's best for them. Even 10 years ago cell phones were a huge distraction, and teachers were trying to compete with phones for the student's attention. They have no place in a classroom. I fully support the bans
Little pointless to do it in a school with laptops out during class though. As that one kid said they’re just going to load the same websites on their laptop. All that really changes is students leaving accidentally leaving behind an $800 phone, or risking that phone getting stolen. Besides if a kid is going to use their phone during class I say let them fail. If a kid doesn't want to pay attention they won't, let them face the consequences of their actions. While I understand the reasoning for taking away the phone during the school day, however, I think we also got to think of those who use their phones for other reasons besides social media. I know of a few people who have a few medical things, like diabetic medical machines linked to their phones to alert them if they go too high or too low. Or in my case, I wear Bluetooth hearing aids, and sometimes the noise around me gets too loud. The only way to fix the sound coming in is through the app on my phone. That didn't really work for my school one time about the school phone. It is an interesting story. I have graduated from because I am the class of 2024. In my 10th grade year , My high school was aware of the generator not working that day for some reason it was broken . The power went out during 3rd period which was in Biology. The school can't communicated to the parents or other teachers by the school phone because not all parents have a cell phones or wants the school to have phone numbers for a reasons. It took them about 45 mins text teacher after realizing what happens. The biology building in school has a problem which is a fortunately the boys were right across the floor for those in second floor for the restroom. While the girls , the nicer bathroom is downstair on the first floor and the problem with that is the only way down or up is using the exit stair. The problem with the exit stair and it is rarely is visible because it navy blue and gray stairs which is impossible to see on cloudly day so a lot kids will have to use a flashlight unless if the schools are willling to provided flashlights to students or parents can give flashlights and battery students in order in case of the power out or unvisible stairs or deal with broke bones and twisted ankles everyday to get to class and HOW can the students focus with the pain? It can also be neccesary for those who have medical conditions and disablities using their phones to help manage stuff and time managment and staying focus on the assignments and these phones may help them with educational experience in life. Also because school back them were one-school room with k to 12 all in one buidling and you only had one teacher and benches as desk and there was a fire to light the rooms but now modern schools are way different from your time. And those extermely long desk. The school also need to contacted the parents to pick up the students if the power doesn't comeback at 1 pm because they need to feed the students and they can't do that without the power being on. Cell phones have already been banned in my area. The students were mad but after a week it all made sense. The main issue besides social media drama and tik tok is that students were using phones to cheat on tests. Students also took photos of an exam and sent it to other students who be taking that same exact later on. There has been no real shootings but we have had a threats of school shooting, bomb threats ( and one was in middle & elementary school ) , suscipious activies. My roommate also had experience people who are not students entering the campus everyday that school is open and they have metal dectors . It isn't that far-fetched of the idea. The only reason why I didn't have a problems focusing in my academic when I have a cell phone. I used a school mode on my Samsung 52A phone. I still used as a college student. Also a lot of app like RUclips and TikTOk have a reminders for screen times and bedtime. Most phones tracks your screentime , steps , health (exercise, sleep , bmi, weight, and many others thing) and it is just not all phones all electronic devices have a screen time limits feature . It is probably a less of problems because you are more north than us. Some school districts way in the deep south area will more likely to have school shooting than those in north. It is common observation. The south isn't bad at all because their is more crimes because we have more poverty problems than those up in the northern states. It is unfair of comaparison because probably Virginia will be different from the Arkansas. Even in Arkansas it is different where my roomate which is near the board of Lousiana has to constant worries about school shooting threats and bomb threats frequently. While I grew up in more centeral location near the captial and there is still prescene of threats but are less likely. Those in the northern part of states where I am currently at is the teachers are arm with guns those who are trained officals and not as prevelant of crimes. Sometime the emergency can happen out of the blue like when do you think school will complete powerout. My high school had it in the 10th grade and it freaked everyone out because my school generator didn't work at all and I was in 3rd period probably the worst building to be in when their is a poweroutage going and even worst we were on the second floor. At least the boys can easily go right across to the restroom but the ladies have to used the exit stairs when their is no lights that will lit the stairs and if the students didn't use their cell phones many girls will end of with broken bones or twisted wrist and ankles and how can you learn with that? The school couldn't communicated with family until the power restored because everything was downed and it is not one size fits all solutions.
I am relieved, as a Virginia resident (as of 2022), that the middle school students in my district are not permitted to utilize cell phones during school hours. I certainly realize that I am a rarity in that I have not yet purchased a phone for my thirteen-year-old mostly because my opinion is that it must be earned. Very best wishes, Andrea S.
As a born and raised Virginia resident, my middle school had what’s called “Zone colors” which had red, yellow, and green. If a classroom had a green zone, students could use their phone without asking for permission. If it’s a yellow zone, students would have to ask permission from the teacher to use the phone. Most classrooms ran through a yellow zone setting. Red zone, simply means, you cannot use your phone, no matter the circumstances, and very few rooms have that, mainly test rooms.
there should be a congressional law that makes it that every app has to have a feature that deactivates itself during the school day. and it also takes parents putting parental controls on their child's phone.
Should the same thing be done to adults too? Also adults are equally as addicted to phones as adoselecents and children especially these days? Maybe we should do banned this day? How can we make it fair? If you want technology to be banned on Children? It is harder to proposed adement because it can be considered of violations of both the First Amedent and Ninth Adement. Because the children are humans and they are citizen if they are born here or on U.S soil . The restricting the access of information for children is not give the children the access of news and knowing the global world. Then we will become uninformed adults and not being able to function in Techdriven world. I am afraid of the school banning cell phones for children will leads to a completed banned of technology for those under 18 years old. Those people who were banned as a minor will mostly likely seek vegance because of the adults always spend time on their phones and will probably enforced a complete banned of technology. There will be problems with that without technology and there is no x-ray , no casts , no TSA. There will be increase of violence and illegal activies without the use of technology. If this world you want to lived in, Then you are insane and especially now we have nuclear power plants that need to be managed and only can be managed by technology. The automation and aritifical ais will not work or robots either. Also food will be more costly now since everything is made by scratched. Glad to see a school putting their foot down on social media during school hours and I agree with cell phones coming with a warning label. They need to begin treating high school students like college students, making them take responsibility for their actions when on school grounds. Your expected to abide by the rules with fines and possible expulsion if they're broken. Make it the parents responsibility if they are minors, if they're of age, its on them. For medical or some issues there are exceptions but that will be understood by staff and very few. When treating high school as an adolescent day care center stops it can begin being a true educational institution.
Colleges and University can't banned cell phones because if you want high school students to be responsiblites is maybe a better idea by setting the example of HOW And When to use the technology apporiate. My math professor allowed us to use our phones as calcuator. So if you want the high school students to have college students experience will means more homework outside of class. A typicall college schedule of Monday, Wensday and Friday or Tuesday and Thursday class for 3 to 4 hours . Also will have to get rid of IEP and 504 Plans because colleges don't do that. And you also have to added dorms, suities , or housing to college. We should also add the cost for educaiton because college is tuttiton. This is horrible. Yeah phones are a major distraction, but the second a school shooting happens, that school & district are going to get hit with sooo many lawsuits. Sadly we aren't in a time where you can take someone's cellphone away for the betterment of learning.
No lawsuits in this scenario, because I’ll flip it. The use of phones during an active shooter can bring attention to the shooter that there are targets present in the location. So if my kid gets shot because YOUR KID WAS CRYING TO MOMMY shouldn’t YOU be sued? Under your logic, yes.
The presence of cellphones in schools has correlated with increased school shootings, so they have clearly not helped anything. And phones aren't helpful in school shootings. All they do is make a bunch of noise causing the shooter to know where you're at. People just want to use them to record it for clout, which is so pathetic. The adults can call 911.
As a parent, the cellphone bans are super annoying. I was able to check in with my kid last year, interact a little throughout the day, work out if pick up needed to be changed or if something was forgotten. Now it’s back to no contact during the day. Also, the school had set up all kinds of practices using the kids cellphones as tools with QR codes around school and turning in your homework by posting a picture of it into a folder online. Now they are still expected to do that, but they are supposed to use their bulky school provided laptops to awkwardly take a picture and they don’t connect to the internet as well, so it’s causing all kinds of problems.
You don't need to be in constant communication with your kids all day long.. it's over the top!! I get rides and stuff but just 'checking in" and seeing what they're up to is stupid and you are probably a helicopter
I can count on my finger I needed to contact my parents during the school day. I’m surprised your job lets you play on your phone all day like that unless you’re unemployed.

Here's the elephant in the room. You're talking about extremely rare and "What-if?" situations when there's a real *EVERYDAY* problem with kids abusing their phones during class now.
I was in high school in the mid 1990's. In my 12 years of public school we never had an emergency that required immediate communication with our parents. If we got sick, in trouble or even a fire...the school would call the parents for an update.
@@JKidding-m3h Doesn't mean it can help more in future? What is rare now doesn't mean it will be rare all the time? The Global Warming was rare before and even noexistence at a point of time. It is big because I was thinking about the consequences of the future. It has been second time that the high school had a power out because it happens at my brother in 2017. And that is 4 years of apart between 2017 to 2021. Maybe you should learn math. Also that isn't that far apart. I will considered it to be extremely rare if it is over a 10 years ago. My house phone was landline until now and we can't use when the powerout with the landline phone. I am not sure about my school mentioning about the battery too but I was a young then. I was more focus on upcoming quiz for Geometery rather than a poweroutage so I wasn't paying attention to the teacher.
I am not talking about the "What-if " situations and it is plain story that happens at my time. Are you sure about the power lines being out? I am tell a real-life experience in my own time when I was a high school students. I am not denying phones aren't distractions because they do distract me too and that why I used the school mode from my 10th to 12th grade years and I was A & B students with 3.72 GPA.
Cell phones have already been banned in my area. The students were mad but after a week it all made sense. The main issue besides social media drama and tik tok is that students were using phones to cheat on tests. A phone camera can instantly give you answers to any type of math problem and even abstract questions like on an English exam. Students also took photos of an exam and sent it to other students who be taking that same exact later on. Teachers were also complaining that students sometimes record them and then make tik tok reels of teachers.
I'm so glad we homeschool and avoid all of this mess.

I totally agree. Cell phones shouldn’t be in school period. The students are there to learn and INTERACT with teachers and other students. There’s a reason for the admin office. People have become far too dependent on cell phones and other technology.
Listen to kids whine about cell phones is ridiculous . They are kids ! They shouldn’t even have them to begin with !
TALK to the people in my classes more now
i’m in VA, and i don’t even use my phone during school cus of wifi, but also since i don’t got nothing to do on my phone, so it doesn’t really affect me. i think my school made an exception for people with medical reasons to use phones too. i’m indifferent, but the reasons i’ve heard to be allowed to use phones is to message parents if there’s an attacker in your school, which, can be far-fetched. otherwise i’m honestly not a hater of this law, basically doesn’t affect me
The school district I graduated from in May 18, 2024. I am currently a freshman student in a 4 years private liberal arts university . I am from AR.
Very best wishes,
Andrea S.
We will be going back to the olden days cycle which most of cities will be using the industrial factories and the agriculure for the rural area. This case most of the girls then will be taught about housemakers instead of something they actually value but it is always sterotypical lifestyle and the men do the yardwork and will be taught that at school. Is this life you want? What if the power plant exploded? Maybe you want the technology now to be used.

First of all, most cell phone bans have exceptions for disabilities, medical issues, etc. If your kid has an IEP for math, the school should be providing the caclulators (they legally have to if the use of a calculator is written into the IEP). Secondly, most math classes have a classroom set of calculators. Your expected to abide by the rules with fines and possible expulsion if they're broken. Make it the parents responsibility if they are minors, if they're of age, its on them. For medical or some issues there are exceptions but that will be understood by staff and very few.
