Maybe it's just me, but I stopped watching her because it seemed as though, as her star grew, her humor became increasingly mean spirited. Earlier in her career, I heard her say she made it a point not to hurt the feelings of anyone, just tell funny, benign, celebrity encounter stories. Now it seems she goes on the attack of anyone she feels has ignored or not reached out to her, or that she can make fun of.
Kathy is super genuine and real whereas elen has been disingenuous and mean spirited. It makes sense they wouldn't get along.

Yeah she deserves it, but probably it will never happen. It's sad how a LEGEND like Joan Rivers, was dismissed by the academy when she died, even after all those years of the red carpet. That would never happen to one of her male contemporaries.

Really Ellen? Kathy's mean? I watched an episode of Ellen where she tricked unsuspecting real job applicants into thinking they were interviewing to be Jennifer Lopez's assistant. Jennifer being fed instructions by Ellen to treat them weird in the interview and make them say and do humiliating things for the audience's amusement. At the end of the interview: Gotcha! This isn't a real interview. Ellen was mocking you on national television. The applicants were clearly heartbroken at the end of the segment. That's a lot meaner than just telling jokes about celebrities.

Sam Tenuto True, but you can exploit Kathy's way via her sarcasm and shining a light on the sometimes ridiculous things celebrities say and do, or you can exploit Ellen's way by sucking up to them on her show. (Although, that applies to most talk show hosts with the exception of Letterman). I do think Ellen is funny and talented but she can be just as mean as Kathy in her own way. The difference, from my point of view, is that Kathy is telling jokes and doesn't actually play pranks on people. I personally don't find humiliating people for laughs to be all that funny.

Honestly, I feel her talk show changed her. I feel that in the beginning of Ellen having her talk show, over 10 years ago, that she was a lot more easy-going and the show seemed a bit more fun. Now, she seems more cynical and doesn't seem to have as much fun as she did starting it. But maybe that's just me.

Patrick Wingate even on certain Ellen clips you can just tell that she's not a "nice" person at all. She's full of it but she "plays the game" as it were, that's Hollywood. I don't think her problem with Kathy is about her being "mean", it's to do with the fact that, to have a successful talk show you basically have to suck up to celebrities, call in favor and be full of it. Most celebs don't have a sense of humour about themselves.

Ive heard so many stories about ellen that don't paint her in a great light..i think she wants to keep the cheesy sweet dancin' friend of the masses image going because lets face it that's where her bread is buttered. Kathy's a lot of things but above all she's a straight shooter and her point about the need for solidarity is a valid one imo.
I love Ellen, don't get me wrong, but the reason why I support Kathy on this is because she doesn't really attack "socially unfortunate" people; she takes on *celebrities* for crying out loud! They're living the life, they have everything going on for them, and their careers would never get affected by being joked about.
I agree. I think Kathy is hilarious. Most of the people she makes fun of, I like. I liked them before she made fun, and I STILL liked them after. But they're untouchable, in a way, and don't have to be accountable for their behavior or quirks like normal people do, and Kathy is kind of, for a few minutes on an occasional evening, like the great equalizer. The criticism she has for celebs is not gratuitous or mean, it's just bringing them back down to earth a little bit and having fun at some of their idiosyncrasies or problematic public behavior.
I think Ellen was so brutalized in the press and in the public for a time in her career THAT IT MADE ELLEN OVERLY SENSITIVE TO CRITICISM of all kinds - whether criticism of her or of other fellow celebs. And I think a certain unspoken, unconscious irrational fear inside of Ellen that was etched there through the actual trauma of how ignorant and cruel the world was when she first came out might be the legacy left behind in its wake.
I think Ellen is taking that fear of how damaging cruel, inconsiderate, unfair words of criticism were to her - truly PTSD-provoking - and perhaps she is projecting that onto Kathy, just a little bit. Ellen probably feels like the celebs deserve to be safe (very true) and that the criticisms might hurt or devastate them the way they did for her (probably untrue).

Kathy > Ellen. People need to remember Kathy doesn't make fun of people to be mean- she makes of fun of people who take themselves to seriously and based on her interactions with them. For example, she wouldn't say 'Start Jones is fat. Goodnight ladies and gentleman.' She would talk about her experiences with her, how full of herself she was and how badly she treated her when she was invited on The View by her.
As a side note, I have a ton of friends who are involved in the entertainment industry and they all say that Ellen is mean whenever the cameras are off. She rented out Soho House for her holiday party and rented out her own private area within it so nobody could talk to her or look her in the eyes and Portia. That's mean.

I always totally "got" Kathy and completely get where she's coming from. I also can see how Ellen, just a regular person who has been thrust into this mega millionaire status with all of the responsibilities can get "touchy" about her status. Writing comments like "she hatched" a debacle makes ZERO sense. She didn't control Heche. Heche is an independent person who made her own choices.
Also, Ann really presented herself as bisexual, not lesbian per se. People are allowed to have feelings and to change their feelings. It wasn't like she was with Ellen for just a week. They had a relationship, it lasted for awhile, and then it was over. Most relationships fail.

Idk what's true, I frankly don't care. My point is that nobody really knows anything unless we're there experiencing it for ourselves. I personally have met all three and I'm 100% #TeamKathy. Kathy and Joan (met them individually) took the time to make me feel like they genuinely cared to talk to me. Ellen looked me dead in the eyes and said "what do you want me to sign" in a monotone voice. When I said "nothing" and explained I just wanted to talk for a second, she looked to the person beside me, asking them what she could sign of theirs, completely forgetting I existed.
Being comedians or not....Kathy & Joan both picked fun at pretty much everyone. I get that they are joking, but at some point or another it gets to be crossing the line. That's not Ellen's style and she her catch phrase is "Be nice to people." So it's no wonder they clashed. Ellen keeps it classy...end of story.

Kathy is the person we all need to be. Ellen is the total opposite.
I love them both but Kathy is definitely the funnier one. However, no one can beat Joan Rivers.
These two ladies just have different agendas. For their careers Ellen's all sugar, Kathy's all salt, and neither wants the other interfering with her brand. Ellen's public image is Oprah's, where she feels responsible for keeping the sweet uplifting positivity for millions of women. Kathy's always been about breaking down celebrity facades, so why wouldn't Ellen be uncomfortable? I have a feeling that if Ellen weren't so famous, she and Kathy would get along pretty well, but she's too far gone in entertainment to let someone like Kathy try to expose her other sides. She'll do anything to maintain her reputation.
That's why I respect and admire Kathy. She cuts through all of that bullish*t and tells it like it is in a comedic way; but in a way that these celebrities fear. Even Kathy Griffith, who mocks her constantly in her shows, praises what she has seen undercover from Celine to fans and crew. Elise Duguay (Celine’s background singer of over 20 years) says she can’t praise Celine enough for how she handles her staff and all the fans that she meets. She never leaves meet and greets until every fan has had the opportunity to meet her. If you even watch a recent clip a week ago where a woman humped on stage and jumped Celine... she handled it with class and grace. Shame on you for falsely accusing Celine when she is literally one of the most grounded and humble people in this business.

Say what you want about Kathy, but she is right about women comediennes should support one another and she's honest about it. Her comedy is real life. Both Kathy and Joan had the same type of comedy as Don Rickles. No one is chastising Don Rickles. Kathy is more modern in story telling. And let's face it. There are a lot of self-absorbed, mean celebrities that she can make comedy about, and it's uncomfortable to them. they don't like it Kathy's comedy takes those meteoric untouchable celebrities down a peg or two and shows them as they are, with faults just like everyone else. On another note, I'd rather be a dog owned by kathy than by Ellen. Ellen discards her dogs to other people after she grows tired of them. Kathy treats her dogs like family members.
But if Ellen is not comfortable with Kathy putting down others, how does that make her mean?
Kathy doesn't put down others. She tells her audience true stories in a funny way. If anything, she is telling on the celebrities about their rotten or stupid behaviors, and making it more comical. I'd say that's genius. She is a comedic reporter.

I'm always supportive of women, even the women in my life who are struggling, or making bad decisions. I think we're all owed conversations and honesty. I hear Kathy saying that and, although we might not like what someone does or how they think, or in this case, what they do, we can, at least, be a support to them and let them know that they are important. The greatest friends come from different places with different views and ideas. Melissa Rivers, Joan's daughter, said that her mother was actually very shy. She was very much loved and Ellen should understand that this woman has worked hard, been loved and has loved. Do you need anyone to provide a character resume in order to be friendly to them? victoria grant you mean Mandy Rogers, she is just as horrible as Ellen, this feud dates back to when Kathy appeared on Rosanne's day time talk show and dropped Portias real name and a joke she made at an Australian TV award show that offended Portia and her people who were in the audience ... the joke... how's it feel to be the fat one on ally Mcbeal...which was funny as old Mandy is a rake. So long ago, but grudge still holds for Portia and Ellen.

I’m 100% on Kathy’s team in this fight, and I think it’s perfectly valid for her to expose self-righteous Ellen for being mean in real life. *HOWEVER*, as much as I love and respect Kathy, I don’t think she’s being completely honest with either herself or the public with her disingenuous argument that Joan Rivers (who will always be a favorite of mine for both her humor and her intelligence) “didn’t have a mean bone in her body” because Kathy’s point is that Joan wasn’t a mean person in real life, whereas I think Ellen’s point is that Joan was a mean comic.

I like both Kathy Griffin and Joan Rivers. I also like Ellen. Kathy and Joan's humor is mean compared to Ellen. Joan did not belong on Ellen's shoe and neither does Kathy.

If I would have to choose between the two, Ellen or Kathy, Ellen wins hands down, she does so much for other people on her show, people that are in need and people that have and are doing wonderful things for other people! I love Ellen and she loves people!

Ellen said "Why would you guys have heard from me?"...then Kathy said "I guess we were speaking metaphorically"...meaning not literally, but figuratively..aka..Kathy was saying they didn't really hear that from Ellen or anyone, Kathy was making it up..that's probably why Ellen was upset.
Some people just aren't going to get along. Ellen and Kathy both seem like lovely people, but if their personalities aren't compatible, they won't like each other. That's no reason to label either one as mean or take sides like so many people in this comment section are...

That's exactly what I thought. It says a lot about Ellen that she called Kathy to reach out to her. I'm glad they had a conversation and were open with each other. But, yes, I wish they could be friends.

This is ridiculous! Kathy Griffin is an insult Comic. Of course she's mean, that's her on-screen persona. Ellen rarely uses insult humor, she may be mean to some people off screen, (particularly if they have spent their entire life insulting people she likes) but everybody's mean sometimes. Ellen's right not to have Kathy Griffin on her show, it would make it awkward to interview anyone else if she'd sat there laughing at Kathy's jokes about them. You can't promote a book called "All the Nasty Rumours I've Heard About Celebrities" on the Ellen Show.

I think that it's a couple of things.
1. Does Kathy want to be on Ellen's show? Is that the kind of support Kathy is talking about? I love Kathy Griffin and the late Joan Rivers; however, I don't think their brand of comedy would work on Ellen's show. To me, Ellen's audience are the kind of people who like nice and inoffensive jokes. They want a light harted show.
2. Like that saying goes, "Different strokes for different folks." I love offensive comedy (the dirtier, the better). Yet, I know some people can't take it (and that's ok, as long as they don't try to stop it). I've got friends and family who will find certain comedians to be too offensive.
3. I like and admire Ellen as well! I can't help to think that this isn't the first time someone has said Ellen is not a nice person. That's cool with me, because I know that celebrities have a public persona. They present one face to the public, but they have a totally different personality when cameras are off. It's not going to destroy my world, if Ellen is really a monster. LOL

Ellen is a total different type of comedienne than Kathy and Joan. Just look at her stand up routine at Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Her comedy routine was so different than the usual men vs women or the making fun of others. It was a fun, silly, and quirky comedy routine that was funny without being insulting or antagonistic, similar to the wonderful job she did at the Oscars.
