This is tough because Aja put up some monster numbers, but did it translate to overall team success? Phee did her numbers which are monster for her team, did contribute to an overall better team success. DPOY would also have to go to the best defender on the better defensive team if their defensive stats are better than the next players individual stats. I understand their careful consideration. In all honesty, because Minnesota doesn't have all the big named players, their coverage has been trash, despite winning the commissioners cup. Minnesota also plays a different type of defense because they are undersized at every position, so a block stat won't jump out at you. A block stat is often overlooked because it's not something everyone can do. D Fg% , D Reb, steals, pnts in the paint, and points allowed are your main indicators. Because Minnesota has better defensive guards, they rarely get beat defensively and have to rely on a shot blocker. Aja's blocks mainly suggest her guards get beat off the dribble more times than not. However, it does matter whether those blocks go the other direction for a score or does it give the team another possession. I wouldn't be upset either way, but Cheryl Reeve is a better coach than Hammon. Cheryl has more rings than Brunson as a player has. She was assistant on those Detroit Shock championship teams. Bill often gave her credit for the team's success. Blocks are equivalent to a turnover, you have good blocks and bad blocks. If you don't secure the rebound and the team gets another opportunity to score, that's a bad block or live ball turnover. Credit to Reeve for understanding and helping Fowles to understand how to approach a block and how to gain possession which closes out the defense.

Why do you keep saying unanimous? It’s impossible for Wilson to do that voters have to vote for five different players if they vote for MVP. Wilson won first place votes last year and still lost because of the other candidates. It is mathematically impossible for her or anyone else to be a unanimous MVP. The closest thing is all the voters to vote from 1-5 exactly the same way and that still wouldn’t be unanimous!

Nope Stewart deserved it last year and both Collier and Clark deserved it this year. Before she got to the Liberty they were a losing franchise for years. The Lynx were garbage the past 2 years and the Fever since 2016. MVPs make their teams better but the Aces are worse this year compared to last year

& also is the block a good or bad block. When Aja blocks these shots are the Aces securing possession? Anytime the offensive team maintains possession that was a bad block because they get another opportunity to score. Cheryl Reeve got this analytics thing down better than any coach. The Lynx have long used those stats to improve players form at shooting and especially defensively.

@michealroebuck683 blocks is a debatable stat because if that block didn't end the offenses possession it doesn't count because the offense got another opportunity.

Phee can play defense against or help defense against many positions especially especially against sf, pf and C and Minnesota has a terrific defense thanks to their GLUE PHEE....like i can't go in stats ...but Aja is a great defender also so it can go either way depending on the rules...like Aja probably got the stats for the case...which like i said with CC by stats wise CC is ROY so there by stats Aja Wilson is DPOY....but like i said before again and again individual awards in the WNBA ARE DEBATABLE...the most important thing is that you in the conversation and that you been considered for MOST IMPROVED PLAYER (because it showed ur growth as a player) it is whatever ...i really wish the wnba had team awards like most improved team, most valuable team, defensive team of the year, offensive team of the year...so people looking at these awards had an understanding of how people felt about those respected teams that season and who won the season
I ain't gonna lie to you A'Wilson is the MVP hands down but Napheesa Collier is the defensive player of the year. Collier can guard the 5-2 on the outside and inside. Wilson kinda drops off on the outside. This is my eye test... stats don't always tell the whole story. That's just my opinion.

You are 100% correct, they can't measure Wilson out vs Napheesa out because that's a reflection of TEAM defense and not individual defense. The other side of that is on offense, same difference. Like Wilson Coach stated, if you have to go down some Blanking Rabbit hole to COOK up bogus things to put Napheesa ahead of Wilson on ANYTHING, then that Reporter really does not know nor understand basketball. @natureredux1957 I think that's just a part of the game Becky doesn't understand yet. The Timberwolves around the time the Lynx were going for their 3rd title began wearing gear that traced their movement at practice. It measures shot rate and all. The Lynx used this same system and were able to tighten up offense and defense by eliminating wasted motion. The also used it to help jump shooters shoot a higher % by measuring at which height to release the shot and how much arc. So, Cheryl Reeve has embraced and mastered advanced metrics to improve individual players and team improvement. Look how long the Lynx stayed relevant. They never fell off as much as others have after having such a massive roster rebuild. They found success in the draft and trades. Reeve is way more underrated as a coach than people know.

@natureredux1957 to address that last unnamed player, it seems like you're referencing Angel indirectly. The number of turnovers Clark has negates her positive offensive stats. Because Angel is a significantly better defender than Clark, Angel's impact on team success is greater because of her not turning the possessions over. Basketball is a game of possessions, and how often those possessions end with a positive outcome; offense is a score, and defense is no score. Rebounding is and always will be weighed heavily because it gives your team another possession. An assist is good, but was there a better opportunity for maybe a corner 3 than the midrange. The corner 3 is the highest percentage 3 point shot because it's the closest and is more likely to end in a score, whether it's the basket or free throws. So, if that helps clear up any misunderstanding that may be had because basketball is not just made up of a box score. A player can only log minutes and fouls a nd still have a better impact than the stat sheet stuffer. It's the screening, tipping loose balls, making the right passes, amongst other intangibles that win games. We see turnovers will lose wayyy more games than rebounds will. Rebounds wins rings and that statement is looking more and more true when looking at successful teams that win championships. Conference titles don't count because everyone doesn't play an equal schedule some teams only play the tough teams 1 time others 2. Call it a rabbit hole or whatever kinda hole you prefer but Reeve has found success in utilizing and implementing advanced metrics in her teams and the results have been rewarding.

@natureredux1957 Well, guess what? Reeve had this issue having Whalen, Augustus, Moore, and Brunson, and Fowles on Championship winning teams that were also Olympians. So what? Is that another excuse? Coaches need to know how to eliminate unnecessary wear and tear. Chartered flights can only allow for so much recovery. This also shows how the depth of the USWNBT is not as quality as it has been in year's past. Dawn, too, relied more so on her starters. Positionless basketball sucks as well because traditional rosters have a balance, whereas a position less one doesn't. One could argue that team USA had 1 true center and 1 true Pg. Everyone else was interchangeable. Having Phee, Stewie, and Aja on the court together was a bog down because they all are PFs who are capable of playing other positions out of necessity. They are not meant to play those positions as much as they do at times, which is another reason the bench outshines the starters outside of the starters being banged up or 1 just old. I'd you're looking at this from a spectators view you may not get it. Another way to look at it is how certain lineups were more fluid. Those players were playing their natural positions, which showcased their elite skills.
