Best in class information, gents! Love geeking out with Jake and Charles and their vast experience on these cars! Also makes me happy to work on my 356’s and early 911’s!
Great video with a fantastic explanation! This is exactly what I needed to feel confident about the engine rebuild process I have ahead. Thank you so much, guys!
MAJOR props on this project Vu! 👍 I would really struggle to muster the courage to pull that off. Having access to the “dream team” certainly helped. Great video.
Vu, a really informative video. Thank you. A faulty AOS cratered my 2001 Boxster S engine at 90K miles. It never smoked, but thinking back on it, I clearly remember the squeal at start up. I thought it was a belt. When the engine blew up, I was going about 5 miles an hour in my office parking lot, turned, and there was a cloud of smoke like an F1 engine blowing up on TV. Its now a scheduled item at 30K miles for me.
I now label baggies of parts and bolts, screws, etc. by writing where they go with a ball point pen on a 3"x5" index card and put one in each baggie. I have discovered that writing on the outside of the baggies will fade and wear off over time, especially if you handle the baggies when you have oily hands.
Fantastic content and great to get such insight. Very excited tonsee tge next video, especially the bit where he explains how to remove the header bolts from the heads. Thanks guys
I'm literally hoping my 1999 C2 fails just so I have a reason to have Mr Raby do his engine rebuild magic! 3.8 litres would be insane in this car. About to hit 100k near trouble free miles, with my luck, probably got one of those bullet proof engines that will last forever:(
I have a 3.8 in my 2001 now and it's been fantastic. Highly recommended. Don't wait until it fails - Raby has changed what engines are considered rebuildable vs not, so better to do it with a better engine than one that might not be salvageable.
@@richardclegg5853 way cheaper to take it into him before it fails. Sometimes failures are catastrophic and nothing can be salvaged think destroyed case. Why stop at 3.8? My Boxster went from 3.2 to 4.3. Simply a back road monster that I will never sell.
I have a 996 Turbo that I want to drop the engine and address the water lines next year. Great info regarding a number other items that I plan to replace at the same time. And good information on what does need to be changed. Hope that there is a good parts list when everything is done.
Note that the 996 Turbo engine is of a different architecture than the M96 in the Carrera, so this video is not a good reference for the 996 Turbo unfortunately
Hi Andy, great video. How wide is the engine as it sits on the table? I’m wondering if it’s possible to drop a 3.4L between the ramps of a four post lift.
At least he didn't "over" sell the way over priced "U"AOS. Having the diaphram remote is nice but the guy selling it tries to make people think you will get hydro-lock the next time you turn the key if you don't spend 8x for his. A huge dose of fearmongering seems to go with ownership of these cars.
Hah. You must not have much experience with the M96 on the track or street. No big secret, parts wear out and break. Eventually after 25 years you figure out which ones break more often than others, which ones cause major or minor damage, and which ones you may want to replace or upgrade before they do break. Your call on how you want to handle it.
Fearmongering yes,and automotive basic tech 101 lacking in all or most owners. My M96 blew up because of my AOS.?!Wrong.Is the fat guy Jake?He seems more like a carnival barker than a tech.Hands are awful clean.Porsche motors are just that. Not the best or worst.Learn your theory kids, beware of guys like this, don't care what his rep is.A real mechanic will jack your Ford van up on a slight hill, take the leaky gas tank out and TIG up the seams on the curb.Yes,I own many Porsches, and other things.
Just finished watching the video - very nice! Considering engine is out and at 98,000 miles, is there a plan to do a borescope to see how the cylinders are looking? As an owner of an 02' Targa with 100K miles, I'll be watching the follow-up videos. Thx.
I have upgraded my IMS and I have the ultimate AOS installed. Plus I have changed or upgraded everything on my car. Name it, I did it. I venture to say that I have the most expensive 986 out there. Lol😊😊😊.
Would love to have this team, including Vu ;), do all this work on my 1999 C2. Are you all opening a secondary shop (wink wink). 170,000 KM on mine with IMS originally changed at 117,000 KM.
I think it is a mistake to have people on this channel that sell or repair items. They have every intention to just try to sell more stuff. I will use my experience has an example. I purchase a C4 new in 2000. The car now has 196,000 miles. I have had three IMS bearings. All were in perfect shape but with no visible wear. Companies have made a fortune selling unnecessary IMS bearings by continuously making people like me worry needlessly. These same companies now say this is part that should be replaced as normal maintenance. Every time this is replaced they profit from it. Why would they not want you to buy as many as possible and call it preventative maintenance? Everytime you mention catastrophic IMS failure you are just doing their marketing.
100% agree. It's all structured to get you to pay $800 for a bearing that costs less than $30, and the multi-page terms are written so they will never have any liability. Too bad so many prop them up too, here and on the forums. Kind of an odd dynamic really. Vu, I could watch Nathan Merz talk about the subtle differences over the years for hours. Infomercials like these that the shillers don't even pay for, not so much. Not sure this is what PCA RUclips should be about. JMHO.
You have a point of course but I don't see who else would give the advice? Gary in the shed? Do you ignore the experience of someone who's seen thousands of engines just because they also make a living of it?
Jakes experience is immeasurably vast and important. I’m not sure if you watched the e tire video before you commented but his wealth of experience can’t be missed. I replaced every item he mentioned and more at his suggestion when Jake built my 06 Boxster to a 4.3L. Never once felt pressured. It’s penny wise and pound foolish to cut corners.
Jake has seen and worked on more Porsche motors over the years than almost anyone else. To ignore his recommendations because he may make a few pennies just doesn’t make sense. In all of my dealing with Jake he is as honest and straightforward as they get. If he didn’t think you needed something he built he would say so.
The hole show was great but it scared me to death. I have a 2003 996 and i'm not do it your self guy. I have 70,000 miles on it and i'm the third owner. SHOULD I TAKE IN AND HAVE IT CHECKED OUT????
Harsh! I was thinking the opposite, he's really good bear in mind he's letting JR talk and not constantly interrupting him , I think that makes him look slightly vague but it makes good viewing letting JR talk and educate us all with his knowledge.
