Boss at Six Flags St. Louis Review: Should It Be RMC'd?

  • In 2000, Six Flags St. Louis unleashed a new wooden monster to lurk in the surrounding woods. The monstrous wooden coaster known as the Boss would terrorize it's guest with many thrills and unfortunately with many rough patches. The shaky nature of this coaster would give it a bad reputation for being a very uncomfortable thrill ride. However even with the rough patches the coaster still delivers an out of control experience especially at night. So this begs the question, is the boss too rough? And should it be RMC'd? Find out my thoughts in our latest in depth review of the Boss!

    It you want a smoother ride, take a ride on a steel coaster. Wooden coasters are supposed to give you the nearer to death experience, with the bit of give and the sound of the stress on the wood, that's what makes it fun!

    I went back to Six Flags last week and figured something out. I like sitting on the LEFT SIDE of the Boss. Then I get the padded wall of the car to hold me in place. If I sit on the right side then the lap bar digs into my legs pretty badly at those same points in the ride.
    So, from now on I am going to try to sit on the left side if I am getting too beat up.

    It has quickly become a *one and done* for each visit to the park. You never know if after the ride you will need to go back to the hotel and lay down or you will run to another ride or need to sit on a park bench and take a break for 15-30 minutes.
    The park has three wooden coasters, one a classic out-n-back from the silver age of coasters, one modern twisty hilly, "not a level section of track anywhere", and then The Boss which has an identity disorder and is too rough. RMC Iron Horse it and turn it into something spectacular....and then have the guts to rename it for real without falling into this tacky Iron Boss or Twisted Boss, silliness. How about rename it Boss, Inc.

    Just visited the park for the first time a couple weeks ago. And for sure the boss was my favorite coaster in the park. As a fledgling enthusiast this coaster could not have been better in every way. As a matter of fact I'd even drive the fourteen hours from Denver just for this coaster and Prowler at WOF. Woodies will always have something steel can't. Out of control untamed intensity.

    Yes it should be RMC'd. It is terribly rough and unless it gets a complete retracking from GCI and new millenium flyer trains then it should either get the Iron Horse treatement or get GCI's hybrid track. RMC wouldn't necessarily shorten the ride. Look at Mean Streak to Steel Venegence. Look at Wicked Cyclone or Twisted Collosus. This is the ideal candidate to get the RMC terrain hyper/giga coaster every enthusiast wants.
    Six Flags STL already 2 other woodies. Retrack Screamin' Eagle and get it Millenium Flyer trains and RMC the Boss. Also tear down Ninja and put and RMC Raptor or Chance Rides Hyper GT-X

    • @austinshaw6269
      @austinshaw6269 4 года назад +1

      I agree that the ride should be given the RMC treatment. However, we need to remember what park we are talking about. If Six Flags is okay with giving us a relocated Boomerang that barely operates, they will not care if the Boss loses half its length when RMC'd (If Six Flags would even cough up the funds).

    • @DestinationThrills
      @DestinationThrills  4 года назад

      I don’t think it would be RMC that would suggest shortening it, it would be Six Flags St Louis. If I thought we’d get a full Iron Gwazi / Steel Vengeance overhaul than I’d be begging for an RMC.

    • @howenator
      @howenator 4 года назад +1

      Really, no. RMCs are so overrated, they are not even in my top 5 favorite manufacturers. Shilke basically just loads them with airtime and zero g rolls and nothing else, at least Boss has crazy laterals, good moments of airtime and basically just needs the trims turned off. The only RMCs I really like are mainly their wooden topper tracks as they actually are intense. There is very few moments of airtime that I’d actually consider intense and certainly none more intense than the boss. Also making it into a hyper or giga would basically cost as much as a B&M giga. The boss is 150 ft tall so supporting a giga with wood would be impossible and the argument that the park doesn’t need it because they already have two woodies makes no sense as they are completely different rides and all RMC hybrids are basically the same, just bigger versions and smaller versions. RMC meant to do this on bad rides and Boss is nowhere near bad. People who think they need to RMC Boss, American Eagle, Wolverine Wildcat and Wildcat at Hershey need to go ride those rides without the mindset that they are complete garbage.

  • @coasterdroidgaming3699

    The Boss is somewhat rough but I can ride The Boss all day long (if I could). I do know 1 thing though, Boss is NOT getting the RMC Track because of its layout and it'll probably cost more than $15,000,000 for it to get a re-amped version of the ride. The reason being is because the land that it's sitting on. It would be impossible to get it re-tracked. I know this because I used to work there and I know most of the maintenance guys that said that it's most likely not going to be able to get done.

    When I rode it in the early 2000s, it was one of my favorites. However, when I rode a couple years ago over two separate visits, it was almost unrideable. Half my family got off after one ride because of immediate headaches and bruises. It broke my heart, but I could only do a second consecutive ride myself 😔 It’s just too much pain for not enough reward, and I love rough coasters! It felt sluggish, crawled at some points, no airtime, and the midcourse break run really killed it for me. I use to be against it being RMC’d but it’s just not good anymore, so I’d welcome some kind of treatment. Maybe a night ride would change my mind lol

  • @blackzim9231

    It wouldnt really get any shorter in physical length, but it might go through the layout faster since there wont be many slow sections. The only rmcs that get alot shorter are ones with layouts that do multiple laps like a cyclone layout.

  • @CrazGaming564
    @CrazGaming564 4 года назад +1

    I would say no at this moment. I would have GCI retrack it and let it run for about 5 years and see how it is from there. If it's still pretty bad, then a 5 year or so gap from retracking to RMCing is a good amount of time

  • @D33GS
    @D33GS 4 года назад

    I think an RMC job would be good for the The Boss if nothing else to give the park some variety in its coaster line up. Six Flags Saint Louis already has a great GCI in American Thunder and the historic Screamin Eagle. If RMC could retain the track length like they did with Steel Vengeance the Boss' overall structure size offers a lot of potential.

  • @thomhurley7126

    Agree with a lot of what you said. It’s a hell of a good night ride. Seems less rough in the dark. I don’t know why. Having ridden a lot of rides, before and after, RMC conversions I really feel that they could transform “The Boss” into the worlds best coaster. It’s isolated. The terrain looks like a great opportunity for a company that loves to use that for a great ride experience. Plus RMC coasters rule. Oh and...Six Flags St. Louis hasn’t had a new coaster in like 15 years. They are getting ready to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Be kinda sweet if they used that to announce the best ride on the planet.

    • @DestinationThrills

      Totally agree that it has the potential to be a top notch RMC. Unfortunately, Six Flags isn’t going to go all out on a conversion like Busch Gardens or Cedar Point did. If we were owned by Sea World Entertainment, I’d be routing more for an RMC.

    It should be RMCd... they issue is not necessary only with the ride itself but the park... there is NO signature steel coaster at SFSL... I am sorry but a Raptor Clone for me isn’t a signature steel coaster... you also ready have Screamin Eagle and American Thunder which are consistently better... I wouldn’t hate the idea of GCI doing the Ghostrider treatment but it still doesn’t fill that hole of signature steel coaster... I personally feel Boss lacks airtime and good laterals. In someways the helix at the end improved the ride but no since that is gone the laterals aren’t that good. If GCI were to revamp I’d like a Legend like treatment where they change more elements to the track if possible to either add airtime or increase laterals... you have Screamin Eagle and American Thunder which together have a little airtime and AT also has some decent laterals... so Iron horse would fit the need SFSTL needs...

    I haven't read any other comments, but honestly, it depends on what they do to the Coaster. Like you, the layout and ride time definitely make it worth riding. Six Flags STL being my home park, I have ridden it Manny times, and don't think I have ever had a bad time(I have only ridden it post 2018), Maybe it is because I can stand the roughness more than most people or I'm just Biased, but it is definitely my favorite coaster(Especially at night). I could see how doing an RMC conversation could bring it alot more smoothness, and may even allow for them to bring back the double Helix, but let's face it, Six flags doesn't really like St. Louis anymore, so it is not gonna happen.

    I'd say it should. Six Flags St. Louis desperately needs something new and exciting so a renovation of the Boss by RMC would be the perfect thing for that park. Also I saw the coaster actually sway back and forth in videos and that concerns me that it could show its age. Even if it has become less of a headache maker, it might take more than a retrack for this ride to feel good as new.

    I prefer to RMC Boss but if GCI is going to do the same thing they did to Ghostrider, I would prefer that’s option. It won’t really matter anyway since Six Flags is going to put in an RMC Raptor here so the park will have at least 1 RMC. I just hope they do something to it since every time I go to Six Flags St Louis, I only have time in the day but it is my home park so I have rode it enough to get used to it.

    We have so got to do Missouri parks together lol. I been on boss over 100 times also. But I would prefer the gci overhaul. But it could be a kick ass rmc maybe one of the best .

    The Boss is way to rough. The last time I rode it, I got Whiplash. Real Whiplash. It was horrible. Terrible headache, body aches, nausea, and flu like symptoms. I’m sorry, but a ride that causes that should be shit down and removed.

    Now if the track length was kept the same, I think an RMC Boss would be LEGENDARY.....especially if it kept those huge drops

      Agreed! I am just afraid as long as Six Flags owns this park that the length will be cut in half if they RMC the Boss.

    I love The Boss but I truly truly hate the walk to get to the station. I'm 30 years old and seeing all these kids just run up to the station with no problem, I'm almost out of breath when I arrive to the station. I didn't have a problem when I was a teenager going on The Boss but now I'm like damn. I miss the old days lol.

      I visited this park, I believe in 2005 for my first, and only time from the UK. I was gutted to wait in line for The Boss, only to get right near the station when the ride suddenly closed down owing to technical issues. A bad storm then came in shortly after and the park evacuated all guests, rather frustratingly for myself and the rest of the travel group. I normally love woodies so was really upset to miss out on this. Another time hopefully...... personally hope it stays a traditional tracked woodie. (I rode my first ever RMC conversion of the former Robin Hood at Walibi Holland last September; have to say it was relentless but impressive, just found the shin restraints rather freaky).’

    Definitely no. If this was a GCI conversion, with shorter turnarounds, smoothed and more banked sections, and no trims, it would be world class. Also would need Millennium flyers tbh.

    Love the video. Agree with your review of the coaster. Disagree with you on the no RMC. Six Flags St.Louis could really use the signature ride. The Boss isn’t that ride. We have three wooden roller coasters! Screaming Eagle is our classic. American Thunder is our modern. The Boss is, well it is The Boss. When examine a ride like this you need to take into consideration the rest of the coasters at a park. As is I think the RMC investment would be huge for our park.
    There are a ton of unknowns for me. Like is Six Flags even going to consider the money this kind of investment would be? Or will the current situation make it something that could have happened but now isn’t going to happen. We would almost assuredly had a B&M hyper at the park if the crisis of 2008 had waited a couple more years.
    So while I love the idea I just do not see this something that is going to happen. Next ride for 2021 is going on the Tidal Wave spot. Which I am really hoping is a new coaster. They are not going to build a coaster there then RMC Boss the next. If this happens it is so far from now.

      These detailed comments are always my favorite. I totally see what you are saying but I just love the Boss. That’s why it is currently my number 1 in the park. Boss has such a the most fulfilling ride duration compared to the other coasters as well. I just think RMC would cut the ride in half which would be disappointing.
      Now trust me if Six Flags St Louis does announce an RMC Boss I will be excited. Even though it is not the choice I would prefer I love RMCs and would be looking forward to the new layout.
      Thanks for the comment!

      Destination Thrills I get it. It is home park thinking. I have it too. I cringe everytime someone suggest getting rid of Ninja. I freaking know that it is a legit bad coaster.... but I have been riding it my whole life and I just love it! So how we think about the home park coasters is always going to be different then how we judge a vacation parks coasters.

    • @howenator

      No, I hate the argument for the RMCing of coasters being the park already has 3 wooden coasters, they all are really unique and RMCs are all basically the same: a combination of airtime and inversions that hypnotizes enthusiasts to putting it as their number 1

    Bro why you steal from Phantom Coasters?

    • @DestinationThrills
      @DestinationThrills  4 года назад +5

      Okay so I just looked up Phantom Coasters to see what you were implying above. I see that he released a well produced Boss Review a week ago.
      1) After watching the video there isn’t much similarities besides the fact we are both giving our opinions and reviews on the same ride.
      2) My video was scripted 2 weeks in advance just like a majority of my videos are. And my content schedule is developed weeks in advance as well. So this has been on the books for quite awhile now.
      3) It’s hard to copy a video you have never seen. (Until now)
      4) You should do some research and look at all the other reviews on my channel. They have followed a consistent format for the last 2 years with minor improvements along the way. I don’t need to steal another format as I already enjoy the one I’ve established.
      5) Just because 2 people release a review video within weeks of each other on the same topic doesn’t mean one of them is stealing. Stealing would be if I used his footage, followed his format and gave the same opinions. Tons of people do reviews on the same coaster. He gave his unique opinion and I gave my own take.
      The reason I even give this comment the time of day is that this was my own video that I worked really hard to produce. It took weeks to put together. I take a lot of pride in the videos I make on this channel so I don’t take these sort of accusations lightly and you should do your research before suggesting such things, as you could be hurting reputations with false accusations.
      However, a good thing has come out of this. After checking out Phantom Coasters, channel I really like his videos and you have given him a new sub 👍

      Destination Thrills I watched Phantom Coasters review. Then I was excited to watch yours. Questions like this are a non starter. We are all locked down right now so everyone is producing content with existing footage. Only makes sense that this kind of thing would happen.
