Quite a sad photo of Bird taken in 1952 at a Norman Granz Jam Session date. The selection itself is most likely from July, 1950 with Red Rodney (trumpet), Al Haig (piano), Tommy Potter (bass), Roy Haynes (drums). His solo is very different from his famous "Just Friends" studio season from 1949.

So true! Bird couldn't have been no more than 30 years old at this session (he looks like he's in his 60's). Drugs are a devastating thing!

That picture of Byrd about says it all... Every who understood his genious cared about him. Funny thing, I don't believe Parker himself cared about himself in the least.

Yeah to be only in his early 30’s when he passed but his metabolic age was that of a 50+ year old man shows he really did not prioritize his well-being. From drugs to food addiction…it’s unfortunate. He also had mental health issues which was not in the least addressed at that time within the Black community.

@@dreamlover122769He was well gone before that. His daughter’s death was only a year before his own. He was addicted to opiates from about the age of 16.

I know what you mean it's nice to hear more "raw" and "rough". Generally "white" folks loved that smooth and polished pop sound. Bird lets go here, more.

I for one love that album with the strings. Bird just showed what he could do in any environment!
