The R1 promises to "remove clicks" but a lot of those clicks are actually decision points that people would reasonably want to make themselves or guard rails that give people a chance to reconsider and back out before committing to what might be a mistake after all.

    • @jessicasretrolunacy

Imagine the privilege of thinking that clicks are such hard work and take up soooo much of our time. I agree, it doesn't seem like there are any safeguards or chances to back out of a transaction by using this device.

    • @SilverSeleucid
      @SilverSeleucid 5 месяцев назад

agreed. the small amounts of smart tech i use now are deliberate and still somewhat of my own volition, they require analog inputs i.e my fingers. AI removes these aspects disconnecting tech even from a physical realm, not to sound to metaphysical here but its almost a form of alchemy

Say that when you can go to a non biased Robot doctor that would tell you exactly what's wrong and how to fix it in 1 visit because it has access to all the medical knowledge that exists. Also when you can ask it to use your 3d printer to make anything you want from a prompt as long as you can quite the material.

I feel the same tbh. Companies do harvest our data and use it train AI models, working class people have not seen most of the benefits of increased technology when it comes to workload as all of the benefits have gone right up the chain as increased profits and not to the workers in the form of reduced working hours, I don't like how companies charge monthly for everything these days and I suspect that AI "assistants" could do the same.

@@John-du2mq Yeah, with all the things we know about pharmaceutical scams and the amount of money in that business I wouldn't be so sure about that AI doctor thing being trustworthy

@@John-du2mq these arguments fail to consider the trustworthiness of the corporation that calibrates and codes AI interfaces. for example we have already seen large amounts of political and social biases in AI assistants and other devices

not also accounting for what those conveniences will cost not just monetarily but also our data being used against our will.

  • @ambiarock590

I love the videos you make, but personally, I dislike the AI craze going on for multiple reasons. The working class has not seen much of the benefit of advanced technology (no reduced working hours, prices keep rising cuz of price gouging and all the profits from advanced tech have gone right up the chain, companies harvesting our data and using it to train AI models without our consent). AI seems to be a buzzword these days. This thing needs to be connected to the internet all the time to function which kinda goes against the disconnect thing. Companies who put out "always online" products can and have pushed software updates to put previously had features behind a paywall. I also don't like how AI can do things for you on your behalf (like booking trips, ordering food, etc.). I do not have enough trust in big companies especially with all the data breaches going on. I don't exactly trust that they have my best interest in mind cuz they don't, they have their best interest and their bottom line in mind and that alone. I also don't like the ultra-convenience that we are seeing in the modern world. Convenience has a price, and I think most of the ultra-convenient things we have these days are just too convenient and not beneficial enough. Fast food deliver apps? Too easy access to super unhealthy and ultra-processed food. Shopping apps on your phone? Way too easy to fill up your home with worthless crap you impulsively bought which stretches family budgets thin and causes more environmental problems. (This is a bit of a personal one, but car dependency? Robs you of social interactions, opportunity to admire the world around you, robs you of basic exercise.)
Those AI pins do have some neat features but the distrust in big companies and the other downsides of AI and ultra-convenience outweigh the pros for me. I'd rather just learn to live without the ultra-convenience apps than have an AI use them for me.

I think this device would be far cooler if it had a local, offline LLM. Obviously a huge part is connecting to the internet but it's ridiculous having to pay a subscription to even use the device, especially with how limited it is

@@cadeallen7210 I think an offline LLM would be fine, but that would take a lot of processing power and thus battery. If these issues were somehow solved then I would be more okay with these AI pins. I prolly wouldn't want one but they'd be mostly acceptable

I will never see myself using a thing like this but I do find your points about it being helpful to use normal apps without the distracting interface interesting. Reminds me of how disabled people use tech devices in their daily lives. IMO the rabbit is a terrible product (they really should have made it into a smartwatch app for about the same functionality) but maybe you can offer another perspective on the matter.

I'd definitely be curious about your take on this. I am a big fan of Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operator for creating music on a simple interface, and their attention to quality in the past has been high. I think the Rabbit R1 can ultimately get where they want it to be, if they weather the storm of unfavorable early reviews. I'm intrigued, but holding onto my money for now.

  • @theunknowngamer2397

The main issue I have with something like the R1 is that it's literally not ready for sale. Just from the initial reviews, it fails at almost every task it was advertised to do. I personally find it would make more sense to either buy a cheap pixel and put GrapheneOS+Any AI and apps you want on it, or just enjoy life without any of it as there are alternatives to just about everything at this point like ordering an Uber through a phone call and playin MP3's over spotify.
I'm personally using a Pixel 7a with Graphene as a "Super iPod" and a flip phone for calls and texts. It's the best balance for me and actually works unlike these AI devices.

Nice concept Spencer! These days we don't even need to "disconnect" as there is no separating ourselves from Tech. For the Minimalist the only solution is in distancing. Asking AI or Big Tech to act as a firewall is not profitable to manufacturers, and would only be offered as a Trojan Horse (or Rabbit). But yes, please elaborate on this topic. We are looking for solutions. Thanks!

It's a little dangerous in my opinion! I don't know if I could trust an AI to make decisions on my behalf. The AI itself could be unbiased if not for the fact that it's made by a company with an agenda; who knows how the AI's decisions will be influenced? Perhaps a cynical outlook, but given the existing nature of smart technology, I can't call it unreasonable. There is definitely a better solution out there.
