Jim Newman | Radical Non-Dualism, The End Of Seeking And Unlimited Freedom

  • Jim Newman talks about a radical and completely valueless message. From his website - "ALL THERE IS, IS INFINITY, APPEARING AS EVERYTHING."
    It's almost too simple.
    In the conversation we danced with the difficult topic of non-duality. Language tripped me up numerous times as I tried to use the mind to conceptualise what Jim was saying.
    We discussed the paradoxical nature of reality prior to concepts, the illusion of the self, and the end of 'seekingness'.

    Excellent convo. I am reminded of a small poem from Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut,
    “Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;
    Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?'
    Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land;
    Man got to tell himself he understand.”

    This reminds me of one of the lessons in A course in miracles: to look around the room picking out objects and saying: this chair doesn't mean anything, this floor doesn't mean anything, this picture doesn't mean anything, etc .... Pointing out that it is the i'ndividual' that adds meaning,

    Great conversation! Thank you, Alex. The mind, by nature, is designed to cut every concept into two so there’s never going to be an explanation that will be enough for the mind. The mind thrives by creating divisions, therefore, any attempt by the mind to perceive the absolute as an object of its experience will never be convincing. In fact, it’s not about answering the questions, but “seeing” from where the questions come from.

      That makes sense, though it seems to me that what jim points out is just linguistic masturbation...i cant point it out, or explain it, but his message just seems contradictory or pointless. It seems that there is no individual sure, but we are programmed to believe we are individuals, and its like we are actors in a play playing a role, and it doesnt matter if you know that its just a role or wehther you are convinced its all real, in both situations you still gotta keep playing. So it doesnt matter in the end, we just gotta keep pretending and talking and behaving as if we are somebodies.

    Great Interview my friend, Hope this fnds you well. Although this cannot be grasped intellectually there is a real resonance of truth about the message. Whats being said here is what would be conveyed had such a (non) event/shift taken place. It does often seem however, that all graduates of this 'philosophy' appear to have graduated from the Tony Parsons school and seem to parrot an intellectually inpenetrable argument. I myself have had one very powerful mystical experience known as Satori in eastern philosophy. The being of oness, dissolution of separation, no sense of I, time, space, the feeling of being the sun, Love, peace, bliss etc. What is being said here is very relateable. What seems to be the difference is the permanance of it. That is what is longed for. Maybe death is that place. ❤

    7.40 minutes in and am reminded that it is Wisdom that is seeking wisdom, and whenever the in-divide-dual makes the distinction of I am seeking, then in that moment you have claimed ownership of the sense of separation as true and, live out your life believing that it is you that is seeking. Seeking is seeking, that is what is, unless you are in that to. It is all what is manifest and the moment you make a distinction then everything is set apart in the reflection of the dream that you call my experience. By understanding the emptiness of everything manifest, dissipates all separation and the wholeness remembers.

    I know exactly what Jim is saying. Namely, that non dual awareness is beyond all categories of thought so no matter how many ways you think of non dual awareness or spiritual awakening, it is still within the field of thought. It is not until one awakens (realizes non dual awareness) that all manner of human made concepts and ideas that we created ABOUT non dual awareness are nothing more than frames of reference i.e. conceptual approximations of what cannot ultimately be described. Non dual awareness has to be experienced directly to know what it actually is. This the problems with many spiritual seekers. They spend years thinking/studying ABOUT non dual awareness, buy books on it, they go to retreats on it, and spend countless hours meditating on it. Unfortunately, it all comes down to *spiritual bypassing* and they don't know it. What I don't get is this: how is it possible that some individuals achieve non dual awareness without even an hour of rigorous meditation or spent the time needed to at least get an idea of what it is? Monks spend practically their whole lives seeking spiritual awakening and they will be lucky if they achieve it in a decade or so. I don't know about you but I often get sick and tired of hearing others talk ad-nauseum ABOUT non dual awareness. I get so frustrated that I wish I could tell everyone to just shut the f**k up about it. Enough talk, we need to embody it instead -like, now! Surely, there has to be a way to achieve non dual awareness in a more expedient way. If we could, it would bring the entire evolution of humanity to a whole new level. At the rate we are going, our lack of non dual awareness with be the end of us.

I also liked that Jim said he was a seeker before (like I wondered where he made his money and so forth) because of course for this seeeker, I want to be 'awoken' with a comfortable life where I don't have to worry about money. That is one part that the non-duality world doesn't seem to get into. It also implies that there are plenty of people who are fully non-dual, and don't have youtube channels, and are possibly starving to death? That is why the conciousness mapping seems to be a good thing for humanity, like if you have a serious hustle for a job, like idk, a pimp, and you find this message, would you 'wake up' and still be pimping? you get my drift? I liked the questions, thanks man

    Our physical minds are finite, temporal and relativistic. Our imaginations are suspended in a floating, relative frame of reference. As informational complexity increases, we rely more upon generalization, heuristics and symbolism to navigate. Detail and nuance are increasingly lost and missed the more we rely on these "compression" techniques to navigate complex ideas. We are born in "syn". But there is more to the human mind than its limited dual-core processor. Our identities are absolutely fundamental. We are truly the product of every defining moment which we know our characters to have been forged by. Hard belief has lead us to experience an apparently hard reality, and ultimate choice defines our characters accordingly. The knowledge of who we are is encoded in this timeline we have helped create. The fundamental information of our true character is encoded in the structure of time, beyond the complexity barrier of our physical mind, across a manifold of timelines. The most essential themes we explore in life and integrate into our true identity, truly are fundamental, and also run deeply into the structure of eternity. It is very well known to neuroscience that our brains are interactive with quantum phenomena. It is my interpretation of this science that we attain a visceral sense of the connections of relevance between the primitive thoughts in our heads to fundamental archetypes, replete throughout the infinite possibilities of existence. The physical mind is relativistic, i.e., dualistic. There is much more, however, to who we are and who we can become. The limitations of the mind are just the necessary means to that end.

    Why is it radical? He's simply saying that separate limited entity called Person doesn't exist. It's just an illusion. And things seem to be happening by themselves. there is no personal doer/thinker/decider. In its simplest terms, this is true. Just how to interpret this on-going what is has forked many traditions like advaita and buddhism. I wish there could be a talk about how to dispel the illusion of separate entity but I can imagine this would be a difficult topic with a notion of "you are already what is" like consciousness says.

    Jim dodges a question at 5:50 that gives away the game here. The question was essentially, would this revelation of the illusion of the seeker have taken place if he hadn't been doing all the years of spiritual seeking that preceded it. It's a simple question and he dodges it. Instead of answering yes or no he says let's go back and restates his general premise. If the answer was "yes" he would have just said yes, it would have happened anyway, spiritual endeavors played no role. But he doesn't say yes probably because it's not very believable since virtually everyone who talks this talk was on a spiritual seeking endeavor preceding this revelation. And if he says "no" that undercuts the whole premise that there's nothing the seeker can do, that all seeking is futile and irrelevant. So, unable to say yes or no, he starts the loop over and arrives at a quasi-answer "so of course what is is not the result of a process" but that was not the question. The question was not "is what is created by a process of seeking." The question was, would the revelation of the illusion of seeking have happened without any prior spiritual endeavoring and he could not answer without undercutting his premise. And if the response to this is, well it's a pedagogical tactic to disarm the seeker, that's fine but that also undercuts the premise that this is not a teaching and has no purpose, etc. Sure, revelations and insights are spontaneous and can't be directly created by a following a recipe but spiritual inquiry puts you in the area where they are more likely to happen. It seems awfully specious to claim that there is no interaction between years of inquiry and investigation into the nature of self and sudden realizations about the nature of self.

      I don't think there is anything specious about the claim that there is no relation between seeking and the revelation - it seems obvious to me that all seeking, self-inquiry etc. rests upon and perpetuates the belief that there is a separate self that has to generate effort to reach a goal, thus reinforcing the very illusion that stands in the way of liberation. An illusion can never dispel itself, and there is no 'realising the nature of self' because there isn't such a thing as a self to begin with, anyone who says so is trapped in a dualistic quagmire.
      The fact that people who talk this way appear to have been seekers in the past doesn't establish that their seeking caused the collapse, it could simply be that there exists a correlation between the seeking and the communication of the message once the 'collapse' happened, for whatever reason. There could be plenty of people around us for whom the same has happened, and they just lack the motivation to communicate it (coz it offers absolutely nothing)

      Respectfully, I see the same subtle orthodoxy here that I am trying to point out. Sweeping statements like "an illusion can never dispel itself" and "all seeking perpetuates the belief..." are dualistic beliefs that sound logical to the mind but are not something that can actually be directly known. Can one *truly* know all the infinite possibilities of how "seeking" might manifest or play out? Sure, seeking can be pointed in a direction that reinforces the do-er but it can also be pointed at simply seeing the illusory nature of the personal identity, seeing how it is made and how it works, seeing through the sense of self from which the seeking arises. In directly seeing the illusory nature of this identity/sense of self, it is possible for awareness (or whatever you want to call it) to be freed from this identification with form, speaking from experience.
      Anyway, I mostly enjoy hearing these talks but there is that little whiff of orthodoxy that never quite rings true to me and I’m curious about it.

      @@keithganzmusicThanks for the reply. Of course it is impossible to know all the possibilities of how seeking could play out, what I'm pointing out is that there is no reason to believe that seeking of any particular kind (like self enquiry) is 'special' in that it leads to liberation. A person could just as well seek money, sex or drugs and it would achieve the same effect as 'spiritual seeking' in that it would cement the notion of a separate individual. It is likely that a particular kind of seeking brings greater relaxation or peace as compared to others, but the orthodoxy lies in claiming that a particular practice or way of living will lead to enlightenment.
      Seeking that points to seeing the illusory nature of self still reinforces the notion of there being a 'me' that has to 'do' something to see that I don't exist. It could lead to a mental clarity or an understanding of the message, but even that would be an experience owned by the separate individual, which is not the same as the collapse of the sense of there being a 'me' doing the seeking.
      Anyway, I really hope that there is some kind of synchrony between a particular way of life and liberation, it would make things so simple!

      Things having points are subjective projections. It can be whatever it seems to be. There is no absolute point however. It isn’t conditional enough to have an objective point. And that is simply the nature of absolute freedom - no constraints.

    I listened with an open mind to about 13 minutes. Generally, I concluded he speaks too esoterically, cryptically, and ambiguously to have any practical, helpful impact on my thinking and experience of life. The language he uses is not helpful in facilitating a conversation with the general public, and even someone of above average intelligence and education would also find it somewhat challenging to accurately grasp what he is saying without understanding his lexicon. Finally, I agree with some of what he said but still don't buy the tenets that there is no one, what is is everything, and everything is nothing. These ideas have no practical or philosophical value to me as a rational person or awakened human being.
