Not much point showing stations and people if it is only a freight service.

If you connect Melbourne to Brisbane via Albury, Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle and Coffs harbour with an underground Japanese SC maglev the overnight freight train would earn so much the daytine fares would only be $10 to anywhere.

You need infrastructure for a developed economy. Just as we use infrastructure today that was paid for by others in the past this key infrastructure investment will pay for itself over generations in the future. There will always be people who are critical of costs in the short term and that is understandable but short-sighted. Successful countries plan long term and invest where there is a continuing pay-off in the long term as well as the short term.

"If you build it, they will come". If you want to increase the inland population, first you build the infrastructure. And yes, even if it's primarily for freight to begin with, it should take traffic from the coastal rail, making that easier to upgrade to high speed. $30 Billion sounds like a scary figure, but divided by the population, it's $1200 per head, and even that is spread over years. I get really sick of the same old objections to every proposal by conservatives scared to try anything new.

It will never happen . Population is not that big to support the project that scale.
