As far as modern death metal is concerned, I agree. Larissa Stupar from Venom Prison and Chase Mason from Gatecreeper also come to mind right away for me.

Woo! Yes! I loved this album. Super strong. I'm so happy deathcore is getting REALLY good because it's a genre I've always felt drawn to for all the drama and emotional extremity it offers. And same with symphonic metal so how it all comes together here is awesome. Great review!

I absolutely LOVE this album. I put it on over a speaker while I was cleaning my room yesterday, and I got so distracted by this. I was having so much fun with these songs, yet at the same time, it was all intense and meaningful. I'm in full support of the symphonic death metal direction that they are taking. I do agree that it was a little long, however, there was not a dull moment, so I couldn't bring myself to take anything out. I'd give a 4.5/5 as well, and I think it even topped Melancholy for me.

Shadow of Intent have become one of my favorite modern deathcore bands. This album is just a masterpiece and easily their best to date imo. Melancholy was a great album and this album is even better.

After listening to it several times. I love it. I definitely love it. When farewell came on i was about to see if i could find Fleshgod Apocalypse’s Labyrinth album cover in the booklet or something. That’s not a bad thing either, because I love that album.
Listening to it a few times I started to think of it Melancholy and Elegy as a double album. Not conceptually, but in tone. Melancholy felt dark and brooding and intense. Where as Elegy still has that, this album felt like more uplifting without sacrificing it’s intensity.
Shadow has definitely become my favorite modern band and I definitely look forward to more from them in the years to come. I definitely look forward to seeing them open for Cannibal Corpse which has to have Ben extremely excited.

I'm dropping another comment, too, cause I feel this is worth saying. I've seen recently that people find Ben's performances to be a bit lacking, but you know what, I have to give him props for showing restraint. If you want to tell a story, like this record does, tell us the story! I'll use Worm Shepherd as an example here, as they also write amazing lyrics, but Devin's vocal acrobatics cover up almost every word he says. I still love Worm Shepherd's music, for the record, and I gotta go check the new album out, but yeah, just thought I'd say that.

    • @themetalmeltdownofficial
      @themetalmeltdownofficial  2 года назад +2

Honestly I don't think its lacking at all. Maybe less range than normal, but there is still SOME range, moreso than most deathcore singers, plus the POWER of his voice is immense. Suits this record and its stories very well.

@@themetalmeltdownofficial I agree with you, I think his dynamics are perfectly fine, and I could listen to his lows all day, they are IMMENSE. It isn't the usual deathcore thing where he's going high and low and everywhere in-between every 10 seconds, but his delivery is still extremely engaging. Dude is an incredible vocalist

Outside Humanity's Last Breath's "Valde," I think "Elegy" is absolutely one of the strongest deathcore albums I've listened to over the last 2 years. I am not a fan of what the genre turned into so I'm pleased. Still, Valde is an album I love and I own; this one I don't like nearly as much, but I respect it for what it is.

Francesco of Fleshgod Apocalypse had a hand in composing the orchestral elements of the album, Ben was right when he said he wanted along side the band move into symphonic death metal territory, tbh I'm glad they kinda got rid of the breakdown central elements since the last album, they're showing the hunger to experiment and compose more varied yet brutal as hell songs.
Still, if they want to achieve that greatness and ambition similar to legends like Fleshgod, Septicflesh, Carach Angren and the like, they need more experience and some research in the musical theory that influences this kind of music.

    • @themetalmeltdownofficial

It sounds like this is the deathcore album for people that are typically pretty picky with deathcore. I'm glad you liked it! Personally, the album lost me in the middle. It felt like the metal side of the instrumentation was relying on the symphonic side to be interesting a bit too much for my liking. I still liked it overall though!

lmao in all seriousness, Shadow Of Intent has somewhat transcended deathcore. I think at this point I'd feel comfortable calling them a melodic/symphonic death metal band. Like, The Black Dahlia Murder meets Fleshgod Apocalypse with a dash of Whitechapel.

I'll be honest, I went into this with little expectations. Deathcore is simply a genre I can never get into, no matter how many "this album will change your mind"s I heard.
This album blew me away. This feels like Death Atlas 1.5, with the orchestral flourishes just intensifying the already intense beat down of the band. Particular favorites are "The Coming Fire" and "From Ruin... We Rise". The title track's depressing message of "we kill ourselves to claim superiority, and will continue to do so for eternity" hits WAY too close to home. 5/5, to say it exceeded expectations is an understatement.

Why do you keep saying " Deaf Core"?! It's a great album but Ben has taken Shadow of Intent to a Symphonic Death Metal direction. There is so much atmosphere behind all the lead guitar, it leaves behind almost anything to be called "Death Core".

    • @themetalmeltdownofficial

you're not wrong to an extent. I still feel deathcore is there in the mix, but overall I think Shadow Of Intent feels like an equal balance of The Black Dahlia Murder, Fleshgod Apocalypse, and Whitechapel. From here on, the deathcore label may not fully apply, or be the most appropriate.
