The senior prank when I graduated was to take the scantron machines and hide them in the bell tower with a big sign on the scantron room that said “check the bell tower.” The sign was the best part of the prank, because the year before us, the seniors had managed to lead a whole-ass horse to the top of the bell tower. They had to close the school to get the poor thing out. The Human Geography teacher saw it as me and my friends were walking by, and we just heard him mutter “not another f***cking horse.”

Devin isn't the first teacher to realize school was not being useful to a student. Dave Grohl's (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) mom, who was a teacher, let him drop out of high school to go on tour with a band. I heard her say in an interview that she knew her son's destiny was never going to be in academia and he already had his passion figured out.

My grandma was a teacher for 30 years and she told me once the one thing that drove her crazy is when other students were disrespectful to other students (it also drives me crazy sometimes I think even more) I always have been told by her and I quote “show respect to adults, keep your mouth shut and never talk out of turn, stand up for yourself and what you believe, be yourself, don’t act up and don’t act out, show the staff respect, and treat other the way you want to be treated”

I’m a high schooler so I think I can help with some of the slang questions
Dog water is what happens when a dog drinks water and like they inevitably mix a bunch of their spit and whatever into the rest of the water bowl and it’s really gross. So calling something dog water is basically just a way to call something gross or bad
A simp is someone who is one-sidedly interested in another person to the point that they abandon all dignity in service of trying to please or garner their affection
Usually but not always in the context of an overly submissive guy who is after either the love or sexual gratification of a girl
The action of displaying this kind of over the top behavior can be referred to as simping
    Hope this helps
    :)

Question for any teachers: When I was in middle and high school, it was a thing for teachers to send a student into the hall for however long (like a “time out”), if they were doing something inappropriate or whatever. Now that I’m an adult looking back on it, was that to punish the kid, stop the behavior, or the teacher’s way of not having to look at the damn kid for a few minutes? 😂😂

I remember when I was a junior in high school, I had “beef” with my Spanish teacher (no disrespect, I was a good kid & we would just poke fun at each other), after she overheard me say I didn’t think she was as “no nonsense” of a teacher as she thought she was (though I still liked her).
My Spanish teacher was prepping to take ~15 kids on a trip to Europe over spring break. Somehow, during class, we managed to get her HORRIBLY off topic, discussing why so many beaches in Europe were topless. 10 minutes later, during independent study time, she’s walking around the room trying to sell candy bars (fundraising for the Europe trip, which I was a part of). This one day (because she knew I had some money on me), she kept pestering me to buy some candy. I looked her dead in the face, and in all seriousness, said “I would love to, but you know, with all this talk of topless beaches in Europe, I better make sure I’m in shape for this trip.”
She told EVERY SINGLE ONE of her students that “someone in 6th period” (me) had said that. After time, everyone found out it was me.
10 years later, she’s a Facebook friend that likes just about everything I share. 😂

By the way “Mossed on” is a football term. Randy Moss is was a legendary wide receiver in the early 2000’s. He would jump up and snag the ball out of the defender’s hands and if you do it, it’s hyped up so much and everyone goes crazy.

Nice that virtual learning went well for you for the most part even though it was definitely challenging for those involved. Others weren’t as fortunate. I remember some teachers getting real mad about students turning the video off. I didn’t understand that though because some live in very rough distracting environments. I read some horror stories about teachers seeing students parents or the students themselves doing inappropriate things during zoom meetings

    • @raykings5244

That is part of the problem, but there was others as well. It was mainly about engagement and being present. Adults getting trained online with camera off is likely to not pay attention. Except with kids money or actually doing the work isn't there to influence them. They often lack the discipline to not mess off given the opportunity. And it makes it easier for the teacher to gauge how the students are receiving the material. And for some people seeing blank screens and no feedback makes it extremely difficult to teach. So I understand why they wanted the cameras on but unfortunately since it's online they can't control the environment.

I have always had respect for teachers. Did I have a couple of teachers that didn't have the best attitude towards their students and in turn made me not have the best attitude towards them? Absolutely! But I always was respectful. Looking back now I realize that I was incredibly lucky that I had more enthusiastic, experienced, and lovely teachers than not. Teachers have one of the toughest most underrated jobs on the planet and I don't understand why they don't get paid more than they do. Especially now when kids are more disrespectful than ever and we live in a world where unfortunately they have to worry about keeping kids safe during a time of crisis. I remember when I was in school those "Children Are Our Future" posters were everywhere. Teachers contribute so much to their students. Not only what the kids learn but bc they spend almost more time with the kids during the school year then their parents do they lend a hand in shaping them into the young adults they become once they graduate. I really don't think that a lot of people think about how much work goes into being a Teacher having to manage their students, teach the curriculum, and get them ready for state testing all while trying to juggle their own private lives. I know people are going to say well that's what they chose to do...yeah which should speak even more about their character considering the responsibility and expectations placed on them now combined with the salary they make. To the teachers on this podcast I would just like to say how much I enjoy your show but also how much I appreciate everything you do. ❤️

Quick German 🇩🇪 lesson on the pronunciation of Devin's last name (from a Native German- not just my Great-Great-grandfather)
There are two ways that Germans pronounce the ie/ei- Combo varying on the order.
E-I: is pronounced like the English 'i'. As these two letters make a distinct sound, they are called "Zwielaut" in German (diphthong). Another example for is A-U
I-E: is pronounced like the English 'e'. The 'E' is used as a so called "Dehnungsvokal" (idk the correct English term, but sth like stretched vowel) as the German 'i' already sounds like an English 'e'. Usually it is used at the end of a syllable, like in Siebold.
So Devin was right all along.
Hope I could help some of the needs out there...

When I was in high school they kept all the bathrooms locked except in the commons. It was horrible because with only five minutes between classes and the fact the school was huge it was impossible to get to wherever your locker was, to the bathroom when needed, and to class on time. I hated when teachers would make you take a tardy to go pee, which meant you could get detention just for not having time to go to the bathroom. The rigid teachers would make you be in your seat by the bell not the door, if was messed up.

This episode made me feel so much better. Lately I've been feeling like I shouldn't be teaching anymore because I just get so frustrated and the students have become so rude after the pandemic, with the backup from their overprotective parents who complain straight to the principal about the smallest things (like their child being told off for running around in the classroom or standing on top of desks...). But hearing these stories helps so much! I once had two students laugh at my handwriting on the board, so I wrote in cursive for the rest of the lesson - they never said anything again! The best, though, was the part about kids thinking they can whisper (but in my case it's lip sync). They pretend to read along but I'm like, you're in 6th grade and your voice has dropped, I can 100% hear whether you're speaking or not! 😂
Edit: I HATE having the period after PE! Sweaty, funky, preteens who are hormonal and tired make for a *fun* time...

@@brandilococo1890 I know it was mind boggling. Thankfully, both of my sons did well in HS. They both were in activities and sports. One of the funniest times though was when my youngest dropped an advanced history class in 11th grade and joined an on level class. The first afternoon he was so amazed at the students that were in his class. He was like, " Mom, I saw kids today that I haven't seen since 6th grade!") lol.

You know, adults are the same when they are in the "school setting" 😁 we would have annual testing at my workplace, where we have a 2-hour written exam and everything, and there would be about 100 people there from different locations. And every single time there would be people who ask what they are supposed to be doing RIGHT after the task has been given, who are late, who talk back when they are late, who argue about leaving their stuff and phones in the designated area (to prevent cheating), who fill in their exam form wrong even if it's very simple and they have just been given instructions on how to do it 😁

I didn’t help with my senior prank so I can’t remember what we did but it had to be approved so it wasn’t destructive. What I do remember is that my senior year we got a new principal and she let us saran wrap her to a chair at the main entrance of the school before classes started for the day. Either the resource officer or one of the assistant principals cut her out shortly before or after the bell rang. I don’t remember ever seeing the principal before her interact with students but she made a point on multiple occasions to interact with us and get feedback from us.

    2 things
    1. We had a basketball game against our biggest rivals and they took apart our sink in the boys guest locker room.
    2. Another senior prank that happened not at my school but another 1 was they put pigs in the school they labeled them 1, 2, and 4. There were only 3 pigs and so they had to shut down the school to find the other 1 what they never did because there wasn't 1.

Idk if anyone’s explained it but a simp is someone who does over the top things for someone they like (regardless if they reciprocate the same feelings to OP) to the point where it feels silly
E.g. Dude is a simp because he did all of his crush’s homework for a semester or if he calls her day and night or if he buys her every single plush mallow he can find because she loves them. I know its probably really normal for some people but its basically a term used for someone who’s at his SO or crush’s beck and call

This was not my senior prank, but it was a class's from a previous year. We have a huge hill ip to the school. Because of the hill there is an upper parking lot and a lower one. All the teachers would park in the top one, and all the students parked in the bottom on. As their senior prank, all the students got to the school early, and parked in all the spots. The teachers were mad as they trudged up that hill. However, when they got to the top, they found out all the students made them breakfast. When it came time for my grade to do a senior prank, I loved that one. I then had a year long sub, who wasn't even around at the time of the prank, tell me how mean those students were and how bad of a prank that was.
