Thank you for this video. It's crazy how a wrong breaststroke kick can do that. I thought for sure you had slipped on rock. Man, what a great place to be for recovery... It's great that your insurance worked with you! This video is a bit behind but I will say, I hope that the time spent was wonderful and educational and relaxing! I hope that you recover fully. It will take a couple of years and one day, you will think," Oh yeah, I hurt that knee once, but wow it's fine now!" Cheers!
Felt like I was watching a suspenseful movie even though I knew the outcome. Nick is a star patient...smiles much of he way even though it's an outcome no one wanted. Admire how you both handled such a disappointing experience. My one experience in Mexico with the health system was also positive. Hope the recovery is going well.
First of all, I'm really sorry for this event, fortunately you were close enough of a big city, I hope you have a speedy recovery, in the meantime, enjoy Can Cun..!!!
All the best to you. Get well soon. So happy you found a good doctor and hospital. AND.....No problems with the insurance. Could have been a nightmare.
@@NextMeridianExpedition Mexico is a relatively modern and up to date country. Can you imagine if it happened in a place like Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, the Congo, or some other African nations? Maybe they are OK, but I am not betting on it. You may want to check with your insurance to find out which countries they will and will not cover medical claims in and avoid the ones where they won't. What if your knee goes out in one of those? Or, you may just want to stay in N. America or Europe. There is a lot to see that I am sure you have not seen yet.
Oh my goodness! So very sorry that Nick has had this mishap! ☹️ Freaky things can hit out of the blue sometimes! You two are REMARKABLE in how well you have handled it. Must have been a nightmare to sort out all the logistics, but you did it!!! Glad Ricardo could help make things better! Wishing Nick a speedy recovery and hope you both get to relax by that pool and and plan for the better days to come. Better days will come! Sending healing vibes! 🙏
I hope the recovery went really well, Nick. It’s nice to see that there are family and good folks around when these problems occur. Hope all the paperwork wasn’t too much of a headache Mathilde! Best wishes for safe and happy travels in the coming weeks and months.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. ❤During this down-time and painful convalescence, count your blessings Nick, you are very lucky to have such a good caregiver as Mathilde.
Salut les aventuriers, Tout ne va pas toujours tout seul et là c'est un dur moment à passer. Courage à tous les deux et bon rétablissement à Nick. Michel
Wow - you all handle this emergency very well. Impressive. And cheers to Nick for facing it and dealing with it in good spirits. Amazing. A lovely place you found to stay as you recuperate too. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
I am sorry this has happened to you two. Although, an accident will be remembered through your experiences in Cancun, Mexico. Hope you both will be able to enjoy the sun.
Happy recovery Nick. God Bless you. Stay calm during recovery and get well. You are in my Prayers bro! Hugs from Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. Mathilde...take care of Nick! Keep in touch guys.
Nic, I had a partial meniscus tear (left) about 10 years ago, managed to heal without surgery (tropical ocean waters helped a lot), and it seems like the recovery is about 99% of my former condition. That is, about once a month I get a twinge of discomfort to remind me to be kind to the knee! The only real change is I now wear an athletic knee sleeve for long or strenuous hikes just as a precaution. Easy walks, even up to 5-7 km, no problem, no sleeve. Be well!
Awesome video as always. Nick I feel your pain I myself have twisted my knee and had to have surgery as well. Don't let it get y'all both down it gets better with time. Just a little piece of advice you may want to keep a good brace on hand just in case. Prayers for y'all both for a speedy recovery.
Speedy recovery for both of you and thanks everyone who is known through and met you guys in those region area and thanks to those cool people who knows the areas and opinions of ideas. Awesome enjoy ur stays
From Port Angeles, Washington- a BIG GET WELL SOON! We enjoy watching your ongoing adventure, and feel bad you're having this awful ordeal. Looks like they fixed you up pretty good, so we wish you a speedy recovery. I bought a decal to put on my jeep and wear with pride. Good luck to you both!
Oh my god, what emotions! I can imagine how many movies you made in your head about your trip, the costs, the risk of surgery, the administrative stuff with the insurance and the hospital, if everything is fine afterwards and you can walk and run. Fortunately the accident happened next to the car with people to help you.I think during a hike in the desert or isolated in the mountains, it would have been more complicated. Good recovery to Nick and congratulations to Mathild for the videos in these delicate times. Have a safe and nice stay!🙂

Friends were vacationing in Los Cabos. One fell with an unopened beer bottle at poolside and was injured pretty seriously. Her American insurance required her to fly home for surgery. A real hassle all around. Glad you were able to get Nick taken care of locally. Flying back home and leaving Albo would have been a problem. I'm really interested in the next part of your journey. Hi guys, recovery tip as you have pool: water running in the pool is a great way to start using leg again because you don't put so much weight on your knee. (Of course, discuss this with your doctor first.) I have done it both for my knees and ankles as doctors recommended it. You just need something on your hips to float. They do make even special water running belt. Maybe you can find it in Cancun. Anyways, hope you get on the road again soon and enjoy your travels!

Forza Nick, sei giovane e con Matilde vicino, farai presto a riprenderti. Il viaggio continua, è sarà proprio quello che avete sognato per tanto tempo, quello della vita...
It would be interesting to know if you bought travel medical insurance. As a general note for anyone considering traveling abroad, travel insurance that will cover medical emergencies is not expensive. Some will even fly you back home if necessary.
Hi Nick Sorry to hear about your meniscus injury. I had the same injury 15 years ago, but fortunately much less severe than yours. A few months wearing a knee brace and I was good as gold. Hopefully you too in a few months! Look on the bright side! Top level Mexican hospitals like the one your great friend Ricardo found for you are reputedly the equal of any in the world. It could have happened when you were in Jackson Hole! There are many skilled orthopedic surgeons there because of all the extreme skiers, But they all work through the same hedge fund owned hospital. The doctors don't do the billing---just the holding company. Standard billing practice for that business model is to bill as much as they think they can get away with from the insurance providers. (Bribes help!) I'd bet your initial bill would be $130,000+. Once they find out how much the insurance company will pay they take it all and hit the patient for a co-pay of 20%. If the patient has no insurance the hospital lawyers just take all the money they have, sometimes including their house. Medical bankruptcy is the largest cause of insolvency in the US.
Yes this is crazy. Already in Mexico it seem very expensive and so much linked back to money compared to what we are used to in France. I can t even imagine in the USA. This is out of understanding for us... So hard for people...
I lived in a small town in the mountains of Colombia when I was with the Peace Corps 40 years ago. I was paid $89 per month and could rarely spend all of it. I'm retired in the US now and am preparing to leave permanently. There is a small city in the mountains of the Colombian coffee region called Manizales. I was there once for a feria and still have fond memories of it. So as soon as I sell my car and furniture I'm off for an open ended exploration of the next place to settle in---which will be in Latin America unless Eastern Europe somehow escapes from WWIII. I'm a mountain person rather than a beach bum, so Manizales 70 degree weather and fabulous bird life is just right. Y se habla espanol. Right now Colombia is the best place in the world for second world amenities and $300 per month rental housing. Keep in touch as you pass through.

I see that its been a month since his surgery---how is he doing? were the doctors competent? I am pleased the insurance company paid for it all. Looking forward to seeing you two back on the road. 🙂A nd thanks----
Hi! We are back on the road and travelled until Guatemala so far. The knee is all back together perfectly. Doctors were super competent they work on football players so it worked super well. Thanks for checking !
Mathilde, when the camera zoomed in at the monitor lizard, my thought was Nick was bitten by a lizard. My heart was at rest when I saw his family is around and both of you have someone to turn. Good to know his surgery was smoothly over and it is time for him to really rest, physically and mentally. It will be some time before he can put weight on his leg as the fractures in his knee joint are still not properly healed. If you are in China, a bone setter could re-set the dislocation, cast it with herbs with no operation needed. Nick, to help bones heal fast, drink seaweed or bone soup (pork, chicken or beef). They are rich in calcium. But strictly no seafood (except fish) after surgery - wound scarring and delay healing. The trauma and pain are gone now. Next time you need not kick so forcefully. Relax. You are not participating in the Olympics. The Lord will send His angel Raphael to watch over you. Get well fast because when you reach Chile you can eat as many abalone as you want. On the upside, thank you for giving us a good shot of the corals. Envious.

Wow good idea. We will look at it thanks for the tip. Hopefully soon back on the road indeed.

It would be interesting to know if you bought travel medical insurance. As a general note for anyone considering traveling abroad, travel insurance that will cover medical emergencies is not expensive. Some will even fly you back home if necessary.
Yes we will cover that. Agreed it is not the biggest investment for an incredible safety net.

Thank you very much for the kind advice and wishes !
Such a bizarre accident 😮 who would have thought that a fit young man swimming was dangerous enough to injure the knee without even kicking anything.
hahahah he had a fragile meniscus, doctors told us it had probably been years that it was in bad shape.
Never would have thought that was possible unless you're a vegan. LOL just kidding. hope you have a speedy recovery.
