  • This Saturday afternoon had everything a railfanner's heart enjoys to watch! It started for me with a broken 4-engine (including a CEFX leaser) northbound manifest in Hull Ga. and continued with a manifest encounter at Howie Siding that included the southbound L675-22. Then it offered a rare sight: A BNSF powered military train that I followed from Howie to Elberton Ga. Returning into my "home sector" of the CSX Abbeville Sub, a very long manifest CSXT Q616 (10,000ft) made its appearance when it went over the great bridge spanning North Ave in Athens Ga. This train had a mid-DPU. I saw it in Hull Ga. again. Finally, the fifth train of the day, also in Hull, was the 4-engine manifest X801-20 with two Union Pacific units leading. I chased it to Howie again, where the circle closed after more than 100 miles and where the day concluded at moonlight. Enjoy in HD! [© 2015 MBMARS Productions. Second video of yours we have watched. Thanks for sharing with us. My wife and I live in Gwinnett County, Georgia and visit Auburn frequently. Plan to visit the Elberton soon. Keep up the good work. Gene and Nancy Bivings

      +Gene Bivings Thank you very much! I hope I can visit Auburn soon again. It's a very nice railfanning location. Elberton has many interesting spots, but it is way more industrial than Auburn.

    Great video once again. The military train was carrying parts of the 82nd Airborne Divisions Special Troops Battalion & 2nd Brigade Combat Team back to Ft Bragg, NC. They had completed a training rotation at the National Training Center (NTC 15-09) @ Ft Irwin, CA.

      @@mbmars01 Thanks I'm slowly trying to make my way thru all the military train videos on RUclips ID'ing them. At last check I've identified 369+ with about 1k to go & 20 or so added a month. Once I identify a train I place it by year into a folder on my playlist. Hopefully doing this will make people realize how common military trains are.

      Perfectly understand, but Norfolk Southern is also active in this area and the Piedmont Division is close with very nice railfanning locations (e.g., Buford, Gainesville, Lula, Cornelia).

    Nice video and catches. My favorite was the military train. It is always an honor to watch videos where the military is being assisted by the various railroads like you had in the video (in this case BNSF). I also liked how you described what was going on.

    Wow. I counted 172 cars on that Q616 10,000 ft manifest train. The first two trains looked long, too. I'd ask if this is because of the economy but I lived in Flowery Branch, GA between 1991 and 2002, and saw intermodals on the Norfolk Southern Greenville sub with 187 trays (longest train I've ever seen to date), so they've apparently been doing this for awhile. Given the hogbacks in your video and elevations those trains have to traverse it's evident that the new higher-horsepower engines and remote DPU technology are letting railroads do some amazing things.
    (When I was a kid growing up in Springfield, MO I once asked an engineer if 185-car trains could be run on the old Frisco, now BNSF, which I doubt is any more challenging than the NS Greenville sub and your CSX Abbeville one. He replied: "An engineer would have to be an ARTIST to run a train that long (on the subs out of Springfield).)
    While living in GA I caught several trains between Winder and Athens on your sub as well. GREAT work on this video!

      @mbmars01  8 лет назад

      +Kurt Wayne Cool, thanks for this information. It's right, there are many trains that are as long as the lengths of the sidings permit, sometimes even a bit more (in which case there is bit of maneuvering necessary if they meet another train). However, with the hills and grades, long and heavy trains often cause troubles, in particular, if there has been heavy rain or even snow making the track slippery. I noticed three stalls in four days on the same hill recently. So, maybe they are currently reaching the limit of what is possible here.
