Oxygen stored in commercial airplanes is not stored as a gas. It's a solid chemical mixture that reacts. So the initial removal of atmospheric oxygen wouldn't remove it. Meaning that people on the plane would have the emergency oxygen.
I was about to say the same thing.
Cool that way if they make a way to survive for an hour off the plane they can watch the world end.

The plane wouldn’t immediately fall out of the sky. It might lose altitude but it will still glide. A plane can glide for a lot longer than 1 minute so when oxygen returns, the pilots could restart the engines and land safely assuming the pilots don’t die or pass out because of the loss of oxygen. But that is unlikely due to the oxygen masks on bored in aircraft.
Plus once the plane gets to a lower altitude it should automatically stabilize. That is part of the design of the aircrafts
The aircraft will be generating much less lift than normal because the air pressure will drop, I still think some passenger planes would recover but they'd have to be at cruise altitude, any ascending/descending planes would probably crash and general aviation aircraft would be worse still

One problem I can see with this is it doesn’t account for human error for example with the cars stopping as the lack of O2 doesn’t effect brakes but it doesn’t take into account that the drivers may be too busy suffocating to brake
And it doesn’t take anaerobic respiration into account which doesn’t need oxygen so they wouldn’t die quite as fast

@@timb2895 but not immediately as without pressing any pedals a vehicle can travel for quite a distance if it was at a high speed with the main think slowing it would be friction and centrifugal drag from the engine and flywheel but if the accelerator was pressed even with no power it would coast for ages as the main limiting factor of the engine doesn’t drag on the drivetrain

The issue I have with this is that chemically bound oxygen isn’t removed, most airplanes have chemical oxygen generators, not oxygen tanks, the oxygen itself takes up too much space to be efficient. In theory the pilots could glide for a minute, and they would be constantly trying to restart the engines which would resume after a minute
How would the engines start up again if there's no oxygen and yes, the plane can glide for very long distances and won't nosedive. If the plane tilts its nose down due to a lack of engines, it will gain speed as it decreases altitude and then the nose will naturally go back up. So instead, it'll be a gradual cycle instead of a straight up nosedive

yeah, but luckily at the same time, our brain can handle 1 minute of oxygen loss even if it's sudden, so you would probably survive given you're not driving or smth that requires heavy focus

I don't think a plane would instantly go into a dive like that , If you set a steady course and maintain airspeed by pitching a few degrees down it will glide for a very long time.
I have a correction: we do not feel out of breath due to lack of oxygen, but a build up of CO2. You can not even notice breathing oxygen poor air as long as the CO2 doesn’t build up.
So would people with Severe COPD fair better than normal people? They tend to tolerate higher co2 levels.

That’s why the used canaries in coal mines, they would die from the buildup of gas before the miners, and without that sign there would be very little warning before you lost consciousness.

Shortness of breath but that’s just from the thinner air not the lack of oxygen. You would also go into hypoxia but unless you’re trained to know how you feel when your going into hypoxia like some airline pilots do you won’t notice it.
The lack of oxygen is exactly the way of those nitrogen cabins are used in some countries allowing you to go through euthanasia.

Quite a lot of cave explorer also dies/died because of such thing. as some other gas (excluding co2) builds up and slowly pushes out normal air they become a death trap - but without you noticing it.
our body has no “oxygen level” sensor. it only has CO2 level monitoring and … as long as you can exhale it… you would feel fine.

so this suffering for lack of oxygen is just not accurate in this video. lower airpressure might be a problem… but one minute of that would be less severe than it is depicted here (i mean when it comes to breathing)

I think the nitrogen would become enriched to the point of narcosis. I believe this would cause sudden or at least dramatic loss of consciousness.
I don’t think you’ll be aware much after about 10 seconds. Without toxic effects of excess CO2 you shouldn’t feel “air hunger”. As a result you would pass out peacefully most likely.

In the second scenario, wouldn't the sudden recombination of oxygen and hydrogen create an explosion since that reaction is just hydrogen combusting?
all previous existing fires would have long extinguished, there wont be a new one that'll start an explosion

@@felipearenasbarr It more depends on how the autopilot is configured, whether the final emergency backups (which don't need O2 to run) can be deployed and can run the AP for a minute. If the system can run the autopilot (at least for a minute) the plane would likely be able to stay airborne.

Couple issues with how this would play out. The sudden drop in 15% of the air pressure would not cause people's eardrums to blow out, even if their eustachian tubes are somehow obstructed. This sudden drop would be felt, as well as heard, as the inner ear finds its pressure equilibrium, but that's about it. This type of scenario has happened on aircraft which are flying well above 80% of the atmospheric volume in an adverse event called "rapid decompression". Further, pilots who fly any aircraft which normally operate at high altitudes are required training and an endorsement for high altitude operations. As part of this training, they are required to be subjected to a number of exercises which take place in a hypobaric (altitude) chamber, one of which is an explosive decompression.
When explosive decompression occurs, as the video's first scenario would be, because the ambient air goes from a higher pressure to a lower pressure, usually a fog or mist will instantly appear. This is caused by the higher pressure air being capable of holding more water molecules than lower pressure air, so the air becomes suddenly super saturated, and the excess water molecules condense into microscopic droplets of water suspended in the air, aka fog or clouds.
When this happens in an air carrier aircraft at cruise altitude, the aircraft is above 18,000', normally around 36,000', but up to 42,000' or higher. The cabin is usually pressurized to the air pressure equivalent to what is found at 6,500'. It's important to note that at 6,000' over 65% of the Earth's atmosphere is already below you. However, the difference in air pressure between what's nominal at 36,000' and the 6,500 cabin altitude is far greater than losing 15% at altitude, and there are no eardrums exploding when that occurs.
The other claim that the loss of all oxygen would cause aircraft around the world to plummet to the ground is not accurate. The engines would absolutely experience what's called a "compressor stall" and completely shut down, but at cruising altitudes might be felt as a momentary turbulent area. The percentage of oxygen making up the total content of air in our atmosphere isn't the same, and actually decreases with altitude. At altitudes above 30,000', O² makes up less than 6% of the total air content, which is enough to run the engines, but a small portion of what's used by the wings to generate lift.
Plus, all of those aircraft are almost certainly going to be operating with the autopilot systems engaged. The aircraft which are operating at lower altitudes during the departure,arrival, and approach phases of flight are also more often than not operating with a fully coupled autopilot system following the preprogrammed route the aircraft was cleared for. They might feel a slightly more significant turbulence incident, but nothing catastrophic.
Smaller aircraft which are not equipped with or using their autopilot systems could be impacted, but depending on the altitude they are operating, it would take longer than 60 seconds to reach the ground as long as the pilot didn't point the nose at the ground.

No the lower the air pressure the less lift is generated. It’s why planes have a ceiling. So it would be like going from 40,000 ft to 70,000 where a commercial airplane would just fall out of the sky. Though depending on what type of plane you’re in and how high you are, it’s possible the planes emergency systems could recover control once oxygen returned.

The oxygen from the oxygen masks doesn't come from tanks. The oxygen is made from a chemical reaction that starts when you pull on the mask, hence why they tell you to pull. So, you would actually be fine.

When the mask is pulled down (there is a small pin tied to the coiled tubing) on a chemical generator that action pulls out a pin releasing a spring-loaded device, that will then start a chemical reaction producing oxygen.
Pulling the mask on a gaseous system also pulls a pin out that allows a valve switch (Puritan-Bennett valve) to spring up and opens the channel for pressure driven cylinder-stored oxygen to flow freely.
All aircraft types use gaseous oxygen supply for flight deck breathing systems, the chemical generators do not produce sufficient pressure for some of the mode selections on flight crew oxygen masks.

you probably could if you were forced to, most people just stop because they're uncomfortable.
You won't start panicking like when you can't breathe or when you hold your breath. You won't feel like you're suffocating at all - that feeling isn't caused by a lack of oxygen but rather by the buildup of CO2 in your body due to not breathing out, which wouldn't happen here, just like in other low-oxygen environments like at high altitudes. You'd have no idea that something is wrong with the air or that there's no oxygen. You'd just start feeling light headed, weaker, possibly even euphoric, sort of like you're drunk or high, then start getting tunnel vision and eventually just fall asleep (lose consciousness) without any pain or suffering. When the oxygen is back and you wake up, you will most likely be just fine and it will seem like you just woke up from a good sleep.
5:00 This would be a bigger problem than described. If the sea level pressure is equal to 60000 feet the loss of pressure would have a much worse effect than the loss of oxygen. All airplanes have a service ceiling. This is the highest altitude they can safely operate.
As an airplane climbs higher the stall speed increases and the absolute speed limit goes down. The absolute speed limit, unlike the "never exceed" speed limit is not a safety maximum, that is how fast you can go before there is a risk of things breaking. The absolute speed limit is the actual speed where things start to break.
If large fraction of the atmospheric pressure disappeared the airplane would instantly stall and begin to freefall. The pilots would notice this even before they noticed their engines have shut down and the can no longer breathe.
As the atmospheric pressure is so much lower the absolute speed limit is much higher, air resistance is much lower, meaning the plane will rapidly accelerate.
If pressure is restored before the plane hits the ground it will almost certainly break up instantly. Of course if it hits the ground before air pressure is restored that that will cause it to break up as well.
This event will be fatal to anyone inside a flying aircraft.

If all atmospheric oxygen gone, meaning that ozone is gone etc, why does that not mean that the CO² should also be gone for those 60 seconds?
Also... many organizations teach hands only cpr for adult, out of hospital etc etc...
As I understand it, the argument against doing rescue breaths is that there is sufficient oxygen in the blood (for... I think up to 6 minutes(?)), such that - stopping compressions to provide breaths is a relative "disservice."
My point being only that... I don't know what my point is really.
