Thanks for another great video Bryn! As a non-driver I've never felt the need to be all that clear on clearways but this was really interesting. Hope you have a better 2025!
Thank you for the good overview of the Red X. Fun Fact, I can no longer hear the words Fun Fact without thinking of Janet from The Good Place. It always makes me smile. Have a New Year filed with exploration and loving friends
Strictly speaking, there's a gap in the A9 clearway at the Tore Roundabout, but still perhaps a good three-digit number of miles. Here's to a good new year.
117 from Tore to Perth. It's a bit weird as the A835 is also a clearway off Tore roundabout so you'd expect the junction to be covered by the order. I bet there's a signing cock-up here somewhere.
So if Bryn is a Patroen of Jen , and Jen is a Patroen of Bryn, isnt that a bit like christmas when you both buy each other the same box of Walkers of Scotland Shortbread ?
I understand how clear way signs do work especially if you are allowed to park or not allowed to park. And to keep the traffic moving without having any disruptions.
All the best for 2025, Bryn. Isn’t there something odd about the trunk road clearway variation and which rules Highways England (or whatever they’re called now) can use, as opposed to no stopping, no loading and no waiting? Interesting that red lines cover the whole ‘road’ (because they’re lines) whilst clearway covers just the carriageway, unless a separate restriction is imposed. Same with zebra crossings, etc.
Was there ever a difference between "Clearway" - which tended to have no repeaters on a strech of road, and "Urban Clearway" - often with specified hours of operation ? In London , and some other places , the Urban Clearway has been replaced by the "red route", perhaps in conjuction with the decriminalising of parking law transgressions.
Happy New Year Bryn. Quick question, do Clearways still require repeaters ? I’m thinking the ones on Salford Rd near J4 of the M61 & Logistics north as they only have the gateway signs. Thanks
The guidance in TSM is that a repeater is only needed after the equivalent of 1 minutes driving at the posted speed limit, in this instance I'd say that you should have them at Logistics North - where it's likely compliance is low I always provide them at extra intervals because the guidance is seemingly designed to save money not help road users.
Road signs are absolutely fascinating, but that's probably me geeking out lol, I do hope 2025 is a bit better for you, my 2024 has been very shite lmao
I can't see what's wrong with the sign at 5:14, I read it as 4 separate instructions so although the text above and below isn't required it doesn't invalidate the symbols.
Very interesting video, thanks for the fun facts. Do you know whether you are allowed to stop for a zebra crossing or traffic lights on a red route clearway?
You may stop on any clearway if there is a legal compulsion to do so, e.g. a traffic signal, junction, crossing, or direction by constable in uniform, or if to not stop would cause a traffic collision.
@@BrynBuck How does the clearway concept change compared to the general Highways Act regulation( legislation?) for not to place anything on a Highway without Legal Authority ( which technically made parking illegal, except where permitted, which seems somehow to have got flipped )
I recently posted a picture of a taxi parked on double red lines for 5 minutes waiting for his passenger to turn up. Is this allowed? I got So many contradicting comments on the Facebook group LOL
No, they can't do that. The exemption is for pick up and set down, not waiting for a passenger. Basically it was intended so hackney carriages could still take fares.
hope you have a better 2025, so glad i came across your channel a few months back
Thanks, you too! Here's hoping!
@@BrynBuck welcome :)
I had never thought about clearways before; I will now spend too much time thinking about them!
Best wishes for a better 2025!
Reading in Berkshire has a Red Route along the Oxford Road & along Wokingham Road brilliant video
Don't stop in a loading bay in a car, even to drop off a passenger!
Thanks for another great video Bryn! As a non-driver I've never felt the need to be all that clear on clearways but this was really interesting. Hope you have a better 2025!
Always something to be learned from your vids Bryn. Happy new year!

This was a soothing drive. It clearwayed my mind X🎉
I’ve seen lots of signs that have clear ways on them. Some I find them useful.
Hope you have a better year next year Bryn
All the best for 2025 Bryn, catch you soon Take care
I understand how clear way signs do work especially if you are allowed to park or not allowed to park. And to keep the traffic moving without having any disruptions.
PS if you stop to read the sign are you transgressing the underlying legislation (? Traffic Order ?)
The guidance is such signs should be positioned so a driver does not need to stop to read one, so technically yes.
Thank you for clearing that up.... I'll get my coat. Great video 👍
Nice to see you again Bryn, been missing you on Twitter.
I'm over on Bluesky these days. Come join us!
All the best for 2025, Bryn.

The differences involved exemptions basically. It caused a lot of confusion though.
Isn’t the Red Cross version a Vienna Convention sign? Might that be why it was adopted then?

It's not a prescribed variant to mix those symbols mind, even if it's legible and understood it still has to comply with TSRGD.
