  • This video is about how to get a calf trained to bottle feed! This job is not always as easy as you would think! Colostrum is the most important thing in the life of a newborn calf!

    What would the feeding schedule amounts look like? 1 quart colastrum twice a day for 1 week, 2 quarts whole milk per day for 2nd week, 1 gallon per day for 8 weeks, etc. With free choice grain and hay from day 1?

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  Месяц назад +1

      It just kind of depends on the calf and how vibrant it is. I would probably do 1 quart three times a day for the first day or two and then try for 2 quarts morning and evening from then on. No grain or hay for the first week and only then I would use Hay for bedding, but not necessarily try to feed them. They will start eating when they’re ready.

  • @KateA231
    @KateA231 5 месяцев назад +1

    Do you bottle feed her to get her used to being handled? I’m trying to figure out how to handle a new heifer but also calf share… I don’t know if that’s possible. I’ve only had bull calves so far in my dairy adventures.

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  5 месяцев назад

      Yes it really helps to bottle feed them…. Touch them every day for two years if possible and get them used to coming in to where she will eventually be milked every day and feed her touching her legs and bag…… pat her and touch her everywhere

  • @AaricHale

    That sure went smooth. So is the calf going to be raised on a bottle and not going to be nursing some on the cow?

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  3 года назад

      Yes it’ll be on the bottle until weaned. My youngest has already taken over the task of bottle feeding her so it’s settled 😂🤣😂

  • @reavisstockard5339
    @reavisstockard5339 3 года назад +1

    Great video.Can I ask why you bottle feed instead of letting the mother feed her?

    • @McGieHomesteadAdventures
      @McGieHomesteadAdventures  3 года назад +3

      Because the mother kicked her away..... and also because it’s better for us since we will also be drinking the milk.

    My calving season starts in a month. I hope the weather is nice or I'll be standing on my head more than I want to, feeding calves. Will your calf nurse on its mother or are you just bottle feeding to get it started?
    Best wishes
