    Interesting to watch in Nov 2021. However, in any undertaking, the only thing that counts is results. I recently bought a Mini 2, and it does everything it is supposed to, totally reliable, and I soon gained confidence to go further from base with it (done rc helicopters, but took a while to get used to controlling drone by looking at phone screen, when it is just a speck on the horizon.As an example, before buying, I looked at the Hubsan Mini, because it has obstacle avoidance, but it was obvious from many reviews that the product is not mature yet and did not have the consistent performance of the Mini 2 IMHO this is the strength of DJI. Plus the excellent support of their Phantom store in Bangkok here in Thailand

      There's a rule for buying Hubsan: it it ain't a Plus version, just don't.

    Complete agree with your words! I like DJI, but the lack of competition makes them as confortable in the market that they relax on some issues as the bad customer support and low attention to some expensive lines as the Inspire family...

    Very well put together. I agree with you; competition is good for us, but sadly there is not much of it. I really hope Yuneec, Autel and Parrot can stay in the game and at a minimum give us good alternatives. I just got a P4 and I cannot deny that it is superior to any GPS drone I have ever flown.

    •  6 лет назад +3

      sent mine back more times than I can remember... had it since the first came out... spent more than half the time in the shop being repaired... flown maybe 3 hour on it total, in a year and a half. Utter garbage.
      When it works it's great... it just never works when I actually need to use it.
      Lost a dozen filming gigs because of it.
      Like it, even love it... just don't ever rely on it. It will fail.

      had a p3 and p4 and never had a problem with either and I flew them 100s of miles and 100s of flights.....just got my mavic air and its superior to both my p3 and p4 hands down......and it fits in my pocket lol

      The best way (for now) that i see those 3 competitors of DJI can pull a fast one on them is to actually do a merging, to consolidate all resources under one banner along with their technology. True, it will still only result in similar drones to that of DJI, but with the combined resources, they might be able to put together a series of drones that from a price point of view, might be lower but still maintain a higher quality while offering more features.
      In the long run, even if this was to happen and it did work, it would mean that this new consolidated company at best would replace DJI and do much of the same thing.
      The hope is that something like this, if it was to happen (very unlikely that it will), it might shake up the market enough that newcomers can get on the market and also start competing with them due to them fighting it out and inevitably losing market shares.
      Personally i don't own a DJI drone but I do have my eyes set on one (for now). It is not because DJI makes the best drones in itself though, but in buying Hasselblad and really amping up the quality of photos and videos you can get out of your drone they really grabbed a huge segment stretching from vloggers to independent filmmakers. The camera is what interests me the most and while I do have a drone that can film in HD, it lacks in both accessories (filters), tilt/pan and these days HD can get you far, but 4K is the new HD. Mavic Pro films in 4k with ease which is why it is tempting for many cinematographers.
      It is on the other hand quite pricey and so I'm not there quite yet.

    • @GadgetInspector
      @GadgetInspector 6 лет назад

      I hear ya, but I wouldn't necessarily expect any drone manufacturer to really unseat DJI as the industry leader. Just going off of numbers and rep, there's DJI and then there's everyone else. I just want alternatives and variety out there so I wouldn't want them to merge either. That's why I really like Parrot and Yuneec because they (at least in the past) did not try to just copy what DJI was doing. They did their own thing. Parrot is releasing something in June and I hope it's something fresh and unique.

      Good to see you here, Gadget Inspector.
      There are cheaper competition for the lower end of the market today but DJI has the head start and their strong R&D.
      Hino and Xiaomi are options with their 3 axis stabilized camera gimbal. The C-Fly Dream and JJRC X9 Heron with 2 axis stabilized camera gimbal are cheap alternatives for DJI Spark.
      I am look at C-Fly Faith as the cheap alternative for DJI Mavic Air - compact (Palm size) travel camera drone.
      My friends use DJI drones for serious drone photography (still and video). The software camera features are better, from DJI but the others are slowly copying DJI as they update their firmware revisions.
      The MJX MEW4-1 copies the Parrot Anafi with its upward tilt able camera but not stabilized for serious video photography. At the moment, there are no competitor for the Anafi niche feature - stabilized upward tiltable camera for serious drone video photography.
      Hope both of you (Captain Drone and Gadget Inspector) can review cheap drones with stabilized camera gimbal for video photography - what “cheap” (non-DJI) drones are available today, for video bloggers.
      Good on you Mates !!

    Bought my first drone 3 years ago. After watching folks with DJIs I chose Yuneec. The main reason is the display. All four DJI owners I watched had significant time delays syncing their wifi phones/tablets with the drone. I saw one guy with a Yuneec and it was instant on, instant flying. I have seen the same issue with other DJI owners since, often takes them 3-5 minutes to get wired in, so to speak. Almost as important, my local hobby shop stopped carrying DJIs because of lack of tech support. In contrast, I have found Yuneec to be responsive and positive (I now have 3 Yuneecs, including the H).

    I'm just new to this drone stuff, but it sure is a lot of fun. I just tried out my new JJRC X8 Cetus after you presented it. What I find most intriguing though is that you can actually build your own. I'm planning on experimenting with that once I learn how to fly well. The JJRC drone seems awesome. Can't wait for the weather to get better. Unfortunately it seems that Edmonton has a ton of bylaws making it hard to find places to fly in the city.

    Great review and comments. I am new to the drone world and my reason for getting into it is the arial photography aspect of it.
    I have not bought the expensive drone yet because I need to learn how to fly first.
    Although I like the DJI drones, I gravitate to the Hubsan Zeno Mini Pro. It has someone shortcomings, but the fact that DJI dominates the market bothers me. I just hope they won't squeeze out Hubsan.
    For now, in the North Dakota winter I will practice my flying indoors with my inexpensive Doneeye 4DV12.

    • @CAPTAINDRONE798
      @CAPTAINDRONE798  6 лет назад +11

      Thank you! Yup, take those Day 0 launch day reviews with a grain on salt. Whenever DJI launches a product, they will send out launch day samples to select (pro-DJI) RUclipsrs and online news entities (two weeks in advance). There is a non-disclosure agreement that the receiver must sign which pretty much states that no posts, comments or videos can be posted until a specific time on launch day. DJI also includes in a short text, listing all the great features of the new product so that the reviewers hit on those key points. Just like with Apple, if you get on the DJI list to review something, you want to stay on that list so that you get to review future products before everyone else. You never wish to say anything negative about the product or else you are off the List. This is why launch day reviewers are happy and excited to show off the new product and only say positive things. Casey Neistat was pretty much the only person who put out a video on launch day and said the drone was great but the WiFi was not so great. Even the reviewers who flew the Mavic Air in cold weather said it was amazing. However, everyone who received a Mavic Air after the launch and tried to fly it in cold weather all said that it shakes terribly for about a minute before it warms up. DJI has since fixed the problem in a firmware update. So to summarize... launch day videos are a good thing, but you really have know that they are saying positive things only... so don't take those as a review of the product.

  • @NigelGLaw
    @NigelGLaw 6 лет назад +1

    Excellent analysis, Captain! One thing worth considering (hope nobody said it below) is that, even if DJI end up with the majority of the market, like, for example, Microsoft with Office, and even if the market becomes saturated (unlikely with current projections), they will STILL need to sell, and, more and more, sell to *existing* DJI owners. So innovation, and price point, could be maintained, as their only income stream is, and will be, from new sales.

I might buy a s9 for mobile film making but thats not yet certain. Its good have competition on the market because that way, consumers get choices. In the last two years when ever I was looking for a drone I never searched for anything other than a dji. I got the spark, then the mavic pro and now looking forward to my phantom 4pro v2 which should arrive within 2 weeks. I wish I had some other big name options. The Parrot Anafi and the Mavic Air are in two separate camps. The Mavic Air is more technically advanced in many ways. But if you don't require all the features of the Mavic Air and all the accessories that support it, then the Parrot Anafi is an excellent choice. The camera on the Anafi looks to be really good!

      The funny thing about the Typhoon H, is that it is getting long in the tooth, but if you look around the market, the Typhoon H with its retractable landing gear and 360 camera is in a class by itself. Even Yuneec has little competition :)

    Very informative.
    Unfortunally DJI has become the apple of drones, and are more focused on consumer level toy drones than prosumer. Personally I have been holding back upgrading my 3 year old P3P since october 2017, hoping they would bring a new drone that could close the gap between the P4 and Inspire 2. Nothing on CES and what a dissarpointment with the Mavic Air. Right now I am keeping my fingers crossed to see if Yuneec releases the H Plus within the next 1 - 2 months as planned and are ready to give that a go.

    I’m new to drones, I kept hearing how gps had improved them , so I got a cheaper one from Walmart and flew it 3 times and I was hooked. 11 minutes of flight so you could wait a whopping 5 hours for the single battery to charge, still I was instantly hooked. I just yesterday bought a mavic air, I first got the spark and it goes everywhere with me. The mavic is definitely joining the party now. I didn’t think a drone could be more nimble and responsive than the little spark, mavic air is just a whole other class though. Can’t explain it, you must experience it. Love the dji drones so far, I thought the flying egg was cool as a fan though Captain Drone. I might have to own one. But competition keeps things advancing and fresh, it seems dji does set the mark though. I’m thinking I’ve got to try this fpv stuff though, really looks like a blast.

    Very informative video, I do have a question however. The demographics for drones is easy to understand and the price range per demographic is a no brainer, but nobody has asked, "how many drones does the consumer own and which manufactures". Point being are a lot of drone sales to the same customer. Thanks for responding if you can.

      That is a question for which I do not have an answer. The hard core drone enthusiasts will certainly have more than one drone, but the vast majority of people are more casual and I would think, would only have one drone. I say this only because there are people who know me and see what I do with drones, so they go out and buy one, but only use it a few times at the cottage or on a boat or at a beach and that's about it.
