Thank you for the fabulous information regarding thread. You saved me from purchasing the wrong thread for my machine and use. Each of your videos increase my understanding of bag making and proper supplies.
Great video. I have worked with industrial machines and threads in my career for 35 years and this is the best explanation of thread and its use in application i have come across. I started domestic sewing in highschool, went into the airforce and learned industrial sewing for parachutes and survival equipmet. I then worked for a sportwear factory and also an upholstry type shop in a chair manufacturer. My last job was with a sign manufacturer where i made banners and sewed on vinyl signs for traffic safety. None of my employers ever explained what threads go with what applications. It was just....here is your thread, here is what you need to sew. Just sew. I did learn at my last place of employment that leather needles work so much better on vinyl signs. Since i retired for health reasons im quilting more and ive decided to study needle and thread uses. This was very helpful. Thank you
This was so helpful! I just made my first backpack on my domestic machine and the same thing happened to me. I am wanting to get into the bag making on line world and your videos are very helpful. Thank you!
You are an amazing content creator! This video was incredibly valuable, educational, and informative. Thank you and please continue delivering amazing content to the bag making community :)
Great info. I also learned the worst way, I bought threads and my sewing machine got dirty with lots of fibers from cheap cotton thread, trying to save money. Thank you for sharing.
Super video, I’m about to buy my first industrial- Juki DU 1881N and this has been the best guide to explain about the threads for bag making, so thank you
Thank you for this. I just bought a walking foot industrial machine and this was quite helpful. I made large bags for myself on my domestic machine and the threads were quick to break. Thank you so much!
Legit the first backpack I made on the Juki, I used regular old 40wt cotton thread. Not even shocked to say that the client ripped the straps right out of the back of the bag on her first outing. I learned the lesson the HARD way.
We learn by experience!!! I made a rucksack (swoon pattern) on my domestic machine before I purchased my industrial. Luckily, I gave it to a friend to travel overseas with, and told her to tell me of any issues. She crammed it full for the duration of the trip, and the stitching started to come apart in a few spots. I took it and opened up the lining and reinforced the outer seams and she continues to use it frequently. That was my ‘aha’ moment with regard to thread weight and material 😂
Thank you. Haven't made any bags (yet), but it's helpful to know I can improve the strength on my domestic machine by using stronger thread. Thanks again, much love. (I would hit the like button but its a pain removing a gazillion liked videos from my list, so just know that really, really liked it).
You were very precise and I needed this information. I’ve tried to understand what kind of thread I should use in my bags and now I know. I understood. Thank youuuu 👏👏👏🥰🥰😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great video again. Love how you focus on specific aspects of bag-making whether it be materials or construction techniques - so helpful and am learning so much from the tips you offer :)
Buying a Sailrite Fabricator machine for Christmas, had some worries about thread sizes and types. Stumbled onto this video and voila! Thanks so much for the info, it cleared up so much confusion!
According to everywhere else I have looked, nylon and polyester thread have about the same breaking strength in the same size. Nylon is stretchier while polyester is more sunlight resistant.
Thank you for this explanation. I went to Joanns and asked a question on thread for bag making. The 18 year old said it's in that isle over there. Great help....
I know exactly what you mean about Tex thread on domestic machines. I had trouble when I attempted to use on top and bobbin. The trouble went away when I used Gutermann all purpose as my bobbin, but that defeats the purpose. Then it hit me. Both my Viking and Pfaff machines offer a "specialty bobbin case" which is meant for bobbin work with decorative cords and yarns. However, I'm confident I can use it for bobbins made with Tex thread. I'll have to give it a try. Great info, by the way!
On a domestic machine I use Gutermann's Mara 50 (tex 60). On my industrial Juki, I use bonded nylon in tex 69 to 138. I do not use cotton thread for anything. No problems so far. Great video - thanks.
thank you so much for this video! This was exactly the video I was looking for. I am making my first messenger bag and after making one of the lower slider buckle straps, I had a thought: Am I using the right thread? Honestly, it never occurred to me to use different types of threads for different projects (probably because I always made the same type of project that all purpose thread is fine for). You answered all of my questions and then some (and the bobbin thread information when using higher thread was perfect). I just have a domestic machine! I watched so many bag making bag-making videos where they burn the thread (which I thought was weird) or one person used cement glue to bind the thread edges. Now I know why! In those videos, they just give you a pattern and show you how to sew, but no other information. I made sure to subscribe because I want to be a better sewist. Cheers!
No lie, I realized that I needed to re-evaluate my thread choices after I had a customer come back with the straps ripped out of her bag. I had only made small bags up to that point, so it wasn't an issue. Once I moved up in sizes though, I had to reinforce things a LOT.
As usual, great informative content! I have never heard of Tex 70 or 90 before so this is all new to me, and I thank you. I find it confusing in figuring out what kind of thread to use on what so I usually use the all purpose thread. I now have more knowledge. Thank you.
❤your videos☺!!! You said for domestic machines to use upholstery thread in the bobbin, what size upholstery thread should be used in the bobbin? Thx in advance☺☺
Quick hint: If you’re having trouble finding “the thread zapper”, look for sources of jewelry making tools. Beadsmith is just what it sounds like; a manufacturer that specializes in tools for beading, etc. Thanks for this great video!
I love the way you explain things, it's super simple and digestible. Not to mention much easier when someone tells you exactly what you need to get! I wanted to ask where you buy your needles and what brand? Thank you!
Just discovered you today -- Your videos are PERFECT. Packed full of helpful tips, information, resources, and very efficiently made. You are a fellow bagmaker that I am in complete awe of :-D
Thanks FK. It's like you read my mind. I've been looking at making a backpack (one I'm currently using us old and having issues with the zipper) and these were questions I had been thinking about. This was enormously helpful. Thanks.
thank you for clearing that up for me, I'm new to bag making and getting the thread was one of the most confusing aspects of it. I love your videos by the way and I'm looking forward to watching more of them. Thank you again Sandie
I love you content! You make me laugh and I love your dedication to bag making! I too am trying to venture into bag making so your videos have been a lifesaver! Keep up the great work!
Point of Reference- We use Poly Tex 92 thread when making outdoor awnings, canopy covers, etc I use this at home, now that I have my own Industrial machine. :-) Nice video!
Hi, great video. Quality of production is stellar. I'm doing research in sewing as I trying to create a bag made of lightweight synthetic material but the seams need to be strong. It's difficult finding some data table that shows comparisons of threads and their relative strengths. But I'll read up on this nylon tex70 stuff.
Great video, I love your expiation of thread and needle. I have a Janome memory craft 9000 and Singer 301A. I'm still new to sewing and have a lot to learn. I make totes, horse bridle bags. I use cotton, and outside upholstery fabric, and corduroy material, nothing heavier. Been using Gutermann Mara 100 , Tex 30 General all purpose thread from Wawak. some of the research I've done, says to use Tex 40 thread, with 16 or 18 size needle. I'm looking to purchase from Wawak, Gutermann Mara 70 Poly Wrapped Poly Core Thread - Tex 40. Is the tex 40 thread, what I should be using? thank you for your help, and thank you for helping others like myself who are new to this bag world! Have a good day! 😄
This is so helpful- I have been considering setting up properly for bag making and my Singer quantum stylist 9960 has been stuttering. Watching your video has been making me consider getting something better. Do you think such kind of machine can handle bag making?
Thank you very much for this. This is the first time, I’ve heard someone give the information like this for a domestic machine. I’ve just been told 40 wt so this is very helpful. I would love to get an industrial machine someday but my space is limited.
I just got into bag making, your info is so important, thank you for sharing your knowledge and the story. I really really appreciated it and I also sub to your channel :)
Great info! Thanks! I am considering getting an industrial machine but I am worried about being able to find the correct thread in lots of colors since my local craft and sewing stores do not carry them. Can you recommend where to find large color selections of Tex 70 or Tex 90 thread and how do you color match with your project if the only place to buy is online?
So, to use the Tex 70 and Tex 90 threads, what machine am I going to want to use to be able to use them? I am just learning about sewing, and I don't have my own machine yet, so the table is wide open. I plan to make tote bags, shopping bags, and messenger bags, something along those lines. Perhaps garments like t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, and maybe some home kitchen decor like placemats, pot holders, stuff like that. I am not planning to go into business, just stuff for myself. I don't want to spend thousands for a machine, but up to like, $750 is doable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am new your channel, and I am loving the content you have!! Fun, upbeat, and your style of teaching cliques with me, so Thank You for that! 😃
If you want to use heavier threads in the Tex70+ range you'll want to at least look at a semi-industrial. There's the Janome HD9 (which I have and love) as well as the Juki 2010. Both are domestic, but semi-industrial. They're straight-stitch only and mostly marketed toward quilters, but strong enough to handle thicker layers. They're good options if you don't have the space for a full industrial like my Juki DU1181N.
thanks for the explanation on threads-- Have a question-- how can I get the seams to lay flat when using vinyl and without topstitching on either side of the seam?
You likely cannot. That's part of the reason we need to have topstitching is to get things to not only look nice, but to stay where we intend them to. You could try getting a small rolling pin and rolling the seams to flatten them, but I don't think they'll stay. Fabric glue might be an option, but that could wear off with use.
Thank you for this video. My juki comes this week and I would have probably tried to use the same cotton thread without even thinking about it. I’ve been wanting a reason to place an order with wawak. Lmao.
Helped and made me more confused. Don't judge me. How much is too much to pay for thread? Im looking at Gutermann and then I seen coats & Clark. Both are upholstery thread (I have a domestic). I want quality. Quantity plays a roll but im more interested in the longevity
What would be the kind of thread and size and weight of it when I am trying to make a fanny pack made out of printed vinyl and waterproof canvas lining>
I have a Janome M7 as well. I’m getting into bags now and I’m wondering the best thread to use. I am making bigger bags, not duffel bags but totes and smaller backpacks. Can I use Tex 35 or 45 in my bobbin? I have a denim needle 90/14. Also what is the “largest” needle I can use with my machine. Thank you so much. I’ve had a order for a large laptop tote nd I want it to be sturdy!! Take care and thanks again. ❤️
Tex 35 and 45 threads are perfectly fine to use in domestic machines! It's when you get to Tex 75 or higher that you need an industrial machine and that's usually due to the fact that it's just thicker and won't go through all the little parts of the domestic without burning out the motor. Wawak carries Tex 35 and 45 here: www.wawak.com/thread/thread-by-use/top-stitch/wawak-optipop-polyester-bonded-thread-tex-45-3000-yds/#sku=pbt45115 (NOT affiliated)
Thank you so much! You have removed the confusion I had regarding the thread! I do have one question, I saw that you had a measurement needle plate. I purchased one and it also came with feed dogs. I did not use the feed dog that come with the plate but the new plate does not fit. Did you have to replace your feed dog to use the plate? Sorry long and probably not an understandable question LOL!
I just bought a heavy duty machine and I want to make bags, canvas and vinyl. I also have some cotton woven that I feel with interfacing will be good, too. I'm curious about the thread on a heavy duty 6800c singer machine. Same rules? Will tex 80 bonded poly work with vinyl? And the machine? I hope to get an answer. It was also recommended to me to use leather needle 90/14, is that correct?
Honestly I don't know that machine very well. The Tex 80 might be ok. I have some from Wizard Stitchery & Crafts. It's a lot less thick than some of the stuff I've used from Sunny's. It'll definitely be best for bags with vinyl. It's a LOT more durable. Worst case - you try it and the machine can't handle it. It'll tell you pretty fast, because it won't be able to loop the bobbin thread. Definitely try with the 90/14.
This is very interesting and having just bought a Janome HD9 for bag making I am just not sure what top thread and bobbin thread I would need for say a leather or faux leather bag - what would you suggest as both top and bobbin thread for a faux leather bag?
I just started making bags with faux leather vinyl, pattern Clematis. Vinyl on bottom pieces. Using my domestic brother machine, noticed stitches at 2.5 length are showing. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions on making the thread not show?
Sew the main construction line at 3mm, then juuuust inside that stitch, on the seam allowance side (wrong side), stitch another line at 2.5mm. That will help distribute the pressure on the main construction stitch so it doesn't pull away and show the thread so much. This is absolutely normal for most bags at points and turns that take a lot of the weight of the bag's items. Generally matching the thread color to the exterior fabric and doing that second line to relieve pressure is good for reducing the show.
i am so glad your video came up yesterday i watched the interfacing one, today the thread. these are important things that are not covered when they make videos about making bags. i am now starting to venture from the level of the tote to other bags. i have a question i have a regular machine, you said to use the heavier thread we can use it on top of the machine (as it is too thick for the bobbin). Okay, will using cotton on the bottom and this thicker on top work together and the thread will not break under usual pressure? Thank you, i love your videos they have excellent information.
Which specific Janome? If it's a domestic, semi-industrial machine, I'm pretty sure the highest you could go is Tex 45 in bobbin and upper thread. If you have the Tex 45 thread, try it in the bobbin and see if it's ok? My HD9 is fine with it, if that helps.
I bought it off Ebay! It's silver. My lighting is angled as such that I can clearly make out the markings. This is specific to the Juki DU-1181N: www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SILVER-NEEDLE-PLATE-FITS-JUKI-1181-WITH-LINE-GUAGE-LONG-SLOT-FOR-FEED-DOG/162427916728?hash=item25d17551b8:g:esYAAOSwYCRdYz-9
Question: when using a domestic to make large bags, you said to use upholstery in the bobbin and Tex 70 or 90 in the upper part of the machine. Does the upholstery thread need to be bonded as well?
Thank you for the fabulous information regarding thread. You saved me from purchasing the wrong thread for my machine and use. Each of your videos increase my understanding of bag making and proper supplies.
I do this so people don't suffer the way I did LOL!

A soldering iron, which some people just seem to have around, works well for fusing cut threads.
I have been looking for a comprehensive explanation! Thank you so much!

If nylon thread is stronger than polyester and unravels less easily, are there any advantages to polyester over nylon?
Typically it's more color options when it comes to the Polyester.

I did! I bought it off Ebay (the link is in another comment, I think).
@@fiercekittenz Yes I got mine also on ebay but do you replace the feed dogs?
Super helpful video! ...Love the baby yoda. 😁
I have a LOT of Baby Yoda dolls. It’s kind of a thing for me.
FK. Thank you for this great information. I really enjoy the educational aspects. Good job! Patty Harp
This is very interesting and having just bought a Janome HD9 for bag making I am just not sure what top thread and bobbin thread I would need for say a leather or faux leather bag - what would you suggest as both top and bobbin thread for a faux leather bag?
The HD9 can use Tex 75 through 90! I have one of those too :) It does great with bags.
@@fiercekittenz Thanks! So do you just use regular thread in the bobbin and thicker in the top?
@@ltyrell405 same in both
@@fiercekittenz Thank you :)
Thank you so much for the video! It was perfectly clear and concise. 👍👍👍
Totally helpful! Thank you
love your videos!!
i am so glad your video came up yesterday i watched the interfacing one, today the thread. these are important things that are not covered when they make videos about making bags. i am now starting to venture from the level of the tote to other bags. i have a question i have a regular machine, you said to use the heavier thread we can use it on top of the machine (as it is too thick for the bobbin). Okay, will using cotton on the bottom and this thicker on top work together and the thread will not break under usual pressure? Thank you, i love your videos they have excellent information.
I believe she said to use embroidery thread in the bobbin and stay away from cotton
Great information in your video. Was wondering what stitch length do you use?
It depends! I use 3.5mm most of the time for construction stitches and 4.5mm for topstitching.
@@fiercekittenz awesome thank you for the advice.
What thread can be used in the bobbin ? I’m using Tex 45 Janome machine. Thanks
This was so helpful!! Thank you so much 😊👍🏻🥳
Can I put upholstery thread in my bobbin and my top stitch pls?
I have a question about your marked foot plate. Where did you purchase that and is it silver or black. Inquiring minds want to know.
Fierce Kittenz thank you. I have one ordered.
What recommendation would you give for a Juki 1181n bobbin thread. Thank you Jacquie
I use Tex 70 mostly in both top and bottom threads on my Juki!
Question: when using a domestic to make large bags, you said to use upholstery in the bobbin and Tex 70 or 90 in the upper part of the machine. Does the upholstery thread need to be bonded as well?
No! It can be regular cotton upholstery thread.
