      @@rossgreenzweig The all metal P238 excels among pocket .380s for two reasons:
      • it is the heaviest in class, which translates into the lowest free recoil energy, and less recoil translates into better shot precision, and
      • it has a SAO trigger resulting in the best trigger pull in class, which also translates into better shot precision.
      Better design, better materials, better gun.

    I would take .38spl or 9mm

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  4 года назад

      They are both very similar. Both similar bullet weight, similar powder charge, similar recoil. The only downside is the lack of pressure in .38 Special dropping off maybe 150 FPS compared to a 9mm of similar weight bullet in similar barrel length. However, that being said a .38 Special is less wear and tear on a firearm.

  • @Fudmottin
    @Fudmottin 5 лет назад +2

    It's hard for me to say if the Golden Saber did better than the PPU in 380. It did penetrate more. None of that denim dump in the bologna pack though. The 38 Spl wasn't bad. Hard to say, but I think the HTP might do a bit better. My revolver has the option for magnum loads, so I can always have one or two in there if the specials don't work. I'll have to see how I pattern with a mixed load like that from a revolver.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 лет назад +1

      But when looking at the .38 Special "group", it looks nothing like anything I have ever printed with that 342PD. Typically at 5 yards I am anywhere between 1" and 4" group all in one area depending on the ammo and my luck of the day. I have never seen 3 significantly different impact points on target with about 8" between the high and low at only 5 yards. It's no wonder that the fateful day about a year and a half ago that my chronograph took a bullet from 8 yards......it was a Golden Saber .38+P.

    • @Fudmottin
      @Fudmottin 5 лет назад

      @@GunSam The Golden Saber certainly has it in for your chronograph. Clearly it's no fan of your 342PD. I forget how well you grouped the HTP 125gr with your 342PD. That would take some looking. Plus you have other defense loads you are happy with. So it is certainly no big deal for you to cross Golden Saber off your list. Of course you have your Taurus too, and that hits to a different point of impact. So whatever load you choose for that has to be different.
      I may be way off base, but it does look to me like point of impact should take priority with a snub load. Once you know you can hit well with it, then you can look to other factors like terminal performance and price. In cases where terminal performance seems good, go for the cheaper stuff so you can practice with it more. Fortunately you also have your reloading option so you can make cheap ammo of your own that has the same point of impact as your defense load. That's a big plus for the 38/357 that really isn't practical for the 380 ACP. It doesn't work so well with 9x19mm either. Such tiny cases! And of course 9x19mm also has the benefit of being really cheap. It's only a little over half the cost of 380 ACP when you are talking range ammo. The cost of 38/357 comes down to components and how much you enjoy loading it.

    Hmmm... I'm a fan of the GS in the larger calibers but kind of dismissed it (or most JHP) for .380 & down. Admittedly my wife's nightstand pistol has .380 GS in it but I feel a bit better about it now; I'd been thinking about replacing it with a good snubbie of either .38 (+p capable) or .44 Spl. especially since she prefers safety off for storage of a semi and racking a slide is a problem for her (and me of her pistol!) I haven't seen GS in .44 Spl though although there are other good rounds to be had. Next range trip I guess she needs to shoot my undercover, mag pug and bulldog to see what she likes and go from there. (Lol she might prefer my rough rider in .22 Mag but I'd be ok with that too.)
    Thank you; upped my respect of the .380 a bit even as it made me a bit more concerned about a .38s performance.

    Both good rounds. That 380 looked pretty sweet. I find it funny that when you watch different golden saber reviews they're all over the board. I have a box of Remington golden saber ultimate Defense 380 102 grain for full size handguns and out-of my bersa I get expansion only half the time every other shot acts as a full metal jacket so I'm a bit iffy using it for for anything. Maybe 380 has a little more going for it than i thought. Most tests i have seen, the 102 gr bullet does not expand at all, or only a little and not reliably. The 38+p however, has always seemed like a top load. Good penetration but not too much, and good consistent expansion. I would say it is probably my second choice after the Gold Dot short barrel load. And the Ranger is in there too. Have not tried HST yet.

    Not just Remington. Any self defense ammo I've seen lately has been much higher. There seems to be no shortages. Any thoughts on what's going on? Or are they being greedy opportunists?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 лет назад

      I think it's marketing strategy. They don't need to with LE ammo sales, but for civilian CCW the world is theirs, lots of gimmicky rounds with lots of ballistics claims that the general public believe. So why not make a buck I suppose. The worst thing though, is when the big companies run their .38 Special ammo with the same powder and powder charge as 9mm to save time and money. Sure it makes an acceptable round at standard pressure pressure, but the performance is terribly like 125 gr at 800 FPS. If they used different powders there's no reason why 1,000 FPS from a snub nose .38 couldn't be had all day long, but to save the money they put no effort into the revolver cartridges. I can't say that I blame them as revolvers aren't too popular, but we can hope for better.

      Its all relevant , the condition of the barrels , how warm temp (how fresh) the drill that was used to bore the barrel , the rifling , how fine the grain of steel used on a particular batch of barrels , how molecularly porous to oil , Ammo and the particular batch of ammo , the particular batch of propellant , the purity of chemicals that were used to create the propellant on a particular day. plus or minus 200-400 psi for chamber pressure is probably more than an acceptable average for off the shelf ammo. Hell even the acceptable Saami standards for something as critical as overall length for a .380 acp cartridge is between 0.910 and 0.984 thats a huge amount of variation and explains why certain ammo won't run thru certain finickey pocket .380's... So many variables and obviously price point the redeeming factor... Technically they could make 100 rounds of any caliber go thru the chronometer at very near identical values thru a specific barrel. But run it thru a different barrel and its a different animal.

      There are bonded versions of the Golden Saber, but one is labeled as bonded and there is also a black belt bonded. The regular ones like here are not bonded and in the past I have gotten jacket separation with them. As far as I know there are no revolver calibers in a Golden Saber bonded, just the 9mm, .40 and .45 are also available in bonded and black belt bonded.

    I carry the Underwood Extreme Defenders in my LCP...... I just dont see hollow points working right out of these pocket .380, maybe not enough speed to expand???

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  5 лет назад +2

      Velocity, energy, hollow cavity size, lead alloy and design all play into expansion. Usually any bullet constructed like a 9x19 bullet and loaded in a .380 don't work well. The rounds setup to expand at lower power like Gold Dot and Winchester Silvertip seem to be the best for .380 expansion.

If it's just a range gun the only thing I can think of that is price friendly and available everywhere is the Taurus 605 and with as light as bullet weight in standard pressure as possible. The Hydrashok 110 gr low recoil would be a good option for that. Also, the EZ shield .380 is a good auto for those who can't rack a slide well and in that price range.

It's almost indistinguishable but there is something slightly different in the hollow cavity. Go one step further and add Golden Saber Bonded to the mix and you have yet another Golden Saber to add to the confusion with not only a different bonding process but yet another slight hollow cavity change.
