Local Hero is one of the best films ever made - on so many levels. I always find something new each time I watch it. And Victor's song always brings a lump to the throat.

One of my all time favorite films...a modern classic..that like good Scotch malt, gets better with age.

One of the most interesting elements of this film is the changing relationship between Mac and Victor. Mac, as an American, treats Victor with suspicion at first but gradually forgets that he is Russian and accepts him as a friend. Their conversation, seated on the pier, is one of the most poignant of the movie.

another endearing theme of the film. Victor sings about being a lonesome man, a "Lone Star", which is what the Texan Mac essentially is (we witness this before he leaves for Scotland). The fisherman from Murmansk has long discovered the warmth and hospitality of this quaint Scottish village, just like Mac eventually will do, and in a sense neither will be alone again.

The ceilidh scenes are my favourite part of this movie. It just doesn't look 'acted', but looks natural for anybody who grew up at the time. The best ever description that I've ever heard about Local Hero is that it is a 'poem for Scotland', and having once dated a Scottish girl, from a small village, back in 1985 for whom this film was something she was in awe of (and which has gottten better with time), I can only agree with her.

So glad to have found this, since it's not on the soundtrack. What a joyous few moments. I watched Local Hero last night, for about the tenth time in 40 years. A wonderful film. And aside from this turn, Victor has some of the best lines. "Oh Gordon, you know I'm more of a cash man." And "you got da deed, ... a piece of paper."

(Brilliant Song) - Sing Along :)
Guess that I was born to be a rover.
Guess I've always been a rolling stone.
But someday when my rolling days are over.
I will find a place to call my own.
'Cause even the lone stars they get lonesome.
Lonesome as the lost ship on the sea.
Even the lone stars they get lonesome.
Lonesome for a lone star man like me

A wonderfull movie and soundtrack. Ive written the music up for it so i can play this at a gig. My kids and i had holidays in a place similar to this fishing village and after travelling the world many times, we always end up saying those seaside holidays are hard to beat. Love the song victor...

Local Hero was filmed at several places around Scotland. Most of the village scenes were filmed in Pennan on the Aberdeenshire coast, most of the beach scenes at Morar and Arisaig on the west coast, hope this helps :)

Aside from the voice synchronization putting a kung fu movie to shame, such a great scene in such a great movie.
Every panty in the house dropped for Victor.
That all aside, it's fair to say that for many who love this movie it brings up important periods in their lives.

The Acetones, like everything else in this film, are fictional. Penan doesn't have a beach and there is no church near by. The keyboard player in the ceilidh scene is Alan Clark who worked with Mark Knopfler on the soundtrack. All the songs are credited to Mark Knopfler but such is the genius of the man I thought the waltz at least was an original old Scottish tune. If somebody has the chords for Victors song I'd be happy.

I never tire of watching it - only 2 or 3 films I can say that about. It is getting better with age like Mac's whisky.

Oh MY Gosh!!! I watched Local Hero ..AGAIN last weekend and for some reason, Victor's song keeps playing over and over in my head. Just now-here is the Man himself-a priceless clip from my favorite movie of all time! Love this :)

Soviet Fishermen came in close to British shores. ( It was a Treaty I think) Many recorded western music to sell in the USSR...which is why Victor from Murmansk sings a Texan song. . Glasnost and Peristroika began during the 1980s. A hopeful time . Victor was like many sailors a capitalist with black market investments in European countries.

@djjc1207 For some reason I started singing this in the car today, despite not having watched this brilliant movie for years. However, I've always assumed the lyric is " 'Cause even the Lone Star State gets lonesome". Maybe we'll just have to sing along differently!!

@djjc1207 Oh-alot like Seattle then. I lived up there for a year and I loved the rain, then sun, then more rain, lots of clouds-it's in ma blood. Early fall was wayyy to hot and in December,15 inches of snow closed down the entire metro seattle area (very hilly-icy roads=nitemare).colorado is just too sunny for me (my home is 6500 feet above sea level-sun is INTENSE) so I love it when clouds roll in-bring on the rain, I say!

@ginsoakedbeau I looked up Local Hero (1983) on IMBD and then looked under "Soundtracks" for credits. It does list Mark Knopfler as haven written all the songs for this movie. It also lists Mark Knopfler as performing most of the songs as well. It gives a band's name of The Acetone

@Falloutcookingshow I always thought the "lumpy" island in the beach scenes was the Isle of Rhum because I found a map and west to northwest is Rhum. I even Googled it. Am I wrong? please let me know-I am only an American here with a very strong urge to visit that Beach!!!! I do have Scottish blood :)

I wrote them and copy pasted them here with the lyrics but due to the many spaces between the chord letters I run out of characters to use (max 500). If you'd like to have it by e-mail (MS Word or pdf) just let me know where to send it.

look, i like mark knopfler, but tit is complete horsesh*t to claim mark knopfler wrote the soundtrack when this band, whoever they are, have by far the two best songs in the entire movie. the song preceding this, which i have attempted to locate for years, is simply astounding. if anyone can find out who this band was, and most importantly what were the two songs they played at this ceilidh
