I don't understand why you have to register to vote. In the Netherlands every legal citizen 18 years and above is automatically registered. A couple off weeks before the voting they send you the papers. You don't have to do anything to get them.
Sadly, it is like that by design. In contries where large turnout for voting is encouraged, voting registration is automatic and you get your document of registration every time there is an election. In countries where voting is discouraged, getting registered is a hassle. The result is that turnout is relatively low, like in the US.
@@kellyb5167 they dont implent it because that would be horribly unfair to the republicans, because we would have a couple million people who would most likely vote democrate for elections.
This is why we need mail ballots for every state. I love what mine did about 10 years ago: they made every registered person get a mail ballot if they were registered 3 weeks before. The last date to register is election day, and you can go to any location and get a blank ballot. I also like north Dakota's method as a secondary option: no registration at all. Just show up and vote.
The notice of the movement of polling places depends on the state's election codes. Within my state, the county is required to notify all registered voters about any changes to polling locations by mail to their address on file or with news releases to the local newspaper. If the notice is timely and sent to registered voters by all appropriate means deemed reasonable, then there is no harm in moving polling places. This of course can differ between states, so you may want to check your state's election codes to determine if a county is required to give notice about changing locations to polling places and if so, contact your local voter registration office to confirm if a notice was sent out to your address on file or if you have a grievance concerning failure to upload state code concerning notices.
@@jeremyconner1348 there has been quite a few instances of moves or closed polling locations (especially in southern states) without any kind of notice. While some of these make the news, there are many that don't. I believe they are speaking of instances like the one that made national headlines in Georgia because they tried to close many polling places in black communities where there would be no other option for a great distance.
This happens a lot in all minority communities and why I have a mail in ballot sent every election. I also check to make sure I am on the voter rolls online 2 mos b4 big elections. I am half Hispanic in a red state so I don't take it as a given. 😕

I'm from a country in Africa and I am also appalled to hear this. Last elections I just showed up to the voting station with my driving licence. I only had to register once when I turned 18.
that's because the whole of post Brexit Europe thinks that having government issued IDs for every adult is something that is convenient for the population "CCTV on every corner? no problem! Nanny state? Inconvenient, but we need to take care of the most vulnerable! ID that allows easy voting, banking, proves your age for buying alcohol and cigarettes, allows passport-less travel across EU? Orwellian dictatorship! Burn him! I'm not American, but I've talked to a few Americans my age -- who are white, by the way -- and I was surprised to hear how difficult it was for them to vote just because they've moved to different addresses or different states, or didn't vote in the last few elections. I'm an Indonesian living in the US, and even I can easily register to vote for the Indonesian elections just by proving my citizenship to the consulate. She's right, it really seems like a systematic exclusion of certain voters.
Lala Don't tell Trump's supporters you are an Indonesian. Almost all of them don't know Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world, but perhaps some of them can know it
same here.. for Malaysian who living overseas, we been send mail voting paper. we just need to post it back. so Malaysia overseas, are voting much earlier than the one in Malaysia. but we still need to registered. however, its fairly easy. the registration committee have been opening booth all over everywhere, office building, hospitals, university, shopping mall ect.. so you just cam stumble one n registered
I am currently to young to vote (can't vote until 2021), and I have heard stories of difficulties of getting registered. From what I have heard, some have even told me just not to vote because it is to much trouble. I disagree, but it is scary to see how hard it could end up being to use my basic rights. I wish we would just automatically register like other countries (as you mentioned).
I know first hand about how difficult it can be to obtain an ID. I personally went for several years without an ID because of Virginia's law. After a financial meltdown, I moved back home to Virginia from North Carolina. Because I was recovering financially, spending the roughly $40 to change my switch my NC driver's license to VA wasn't a priority. My ID was still valid, so I put it off. I made the mistake of allowing my ID to expire, which meant I could no longer simply transfer my ID. That's when I discovered that VA has the same law she mentioned - to get an ID, you need to have a birth certificate, but to get a copy of your birth certificate you need to have an ID. I had lost my birth certificate in a storage building that became collateral damage of my financial situation... so I was stuck with no way to obtain an ID. Eventually VA updated the law to allow for a family member with a valid ID to sign an affidavit confirming your identity in lieu of having a valid ID, so I was eventually able to get an ID. However, I wouldn't have been able to if I did not have any family that had a valid ID or could appear with me at a DMV. These laws DO target minorities and the impoverished with, as she said, surgical precision. It's ridiculous.
Not only is Trevor Noah an amazing interviewer but he brings guests on his show that's informative and insightful. I walk away more knowledgeable on the issues. Thank you!
8:39 reminds me of the German story of the Hauptmann von Köpenick (Captain of Köpenick), where a daylabourer tried to get housing in Köpenick, but couldn't without ID, and couldn't get ID without an address. He ended up buying a captain's uniform from a costume shop, took command of some soldiers, went to the authority and forced them to issue an ID to him.
RowanEcat reach out to your friends or people in the community who can drive themselves to vote, help them fill out the absentee ballot, or reach out to your community leaders to see how you can help. Thank you for your desire to help 😁
In addition to ending partisan gerrymandering and cracking down on attempted voter suppression such as the numerous heinous instances that occurred within the past several years, banning the discriminatory and unconstitutional attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census must become a make-or-break item for any members of Congress who hope to maintain their position after the midterms.
This woman is amazing! Great guest Trevor. I'm a Democrat in small town KY. It SUCKS! I, generally, have to keep that "taboo" to myself. Sad times we live in.
Thank you so much for bringing Prof. Anderson to your show to further spread her erudition to the masses, this needs to go viral with millions of viewers.
I'm from Indiana and couldn't get a copy of my birth certificate because I didn't have a driver's license (and as she said, I needed my birth cert to get my license) eventually I was able to get it by sending a photocopy of my estranged mother's ID. We were estranged because my family abused me so I had to put myself in danger to send a photocopy that isn't certified as real to get my birth cert. Indiana is fucked up. The whole state is built on the concept of catch 22 when it comes to disenfranchised people.
Carol Anderson is a fascinating guest. So articulate, armed with excellent research, and seems so incredibly nice. One of the things I love about the Daily Show with Trevor Noah is the interviews. He finds such interesting choices, books, films, people who I often discover about on his "comedy" show. Just wow!
In our area in NC the DMV is overwhelmed by people who are trying to get an ID. It takes much longer to get a plain ID for voting than a driver's license. The lines everywhere in our area are crowded for up to two-three hours. You cannot make an appointment unless you are willing to wait until JANUARY, anywhere in the area. So, if this isn't an example to keep young people and black people out. Who on minimum wage can wait two-three hours with all their paperwork, after spending hours to gather it and then register. It is amazing. All my friends who are going for just renewing their driver's license are telling me to prepare to wait 2 hours and if I were taking a daughter or granddaughter for the first license, it is a 5 hour wait, everywhere. Think of that (and republicans have to wait just as long to renew....think about that!!!!!)
Get the money out of politics or the prison industrial complex will make sure this never happens. Also gotta legalize weed for medical and recreational usage and decrininalize/reclassify substance addiction as a mental health issue rather than a criminal moral failing.
Smiles no it won’t as blacks don’t make up the majority of people in prisons neither Hispanics they can’t because we’re not the majority you have to start with education it’s the lack of education that leads to prison.
brandon wright you have to get people into the education system before there’s enough of a demand to improve it. We have the largest ratio of American citizens in prison by a LANDSLIDE and they’re disproportionately minorities. Improving that would turn around ALOT of districts
Smiles we do not the minorities that is have the most in prison. unlike you I’ve worked in the prison system in multiple states and what your referencing is a lie that is continually told to Americans but this just isn’t so education is the key as most American kids nowadays refuse to read anything that’s not on a computer

So basically America is not a democratic Country anymore? I am a German it is in our constitution to rise up against a unjust government if democracy is ever in danger again. This is a huge deal. If you are stripped of your voting rights you have to do something!
There are a lot of Americans that are very educated but they just end up on the The Daily Show, not in the political spectrum. Idiot politicians are there but not good and educated people like Carol Anderson. This is unacceptable.
Wait, you have to "ask for permission" to vote and don't get sent a letter which is like "yea there is an election, show them this paper and your I.d. card to vote"?
We have to push it til its "systematic"! Either find a way to make it important or interesting. Simple as that. They're not stupid, just not concerned.....unfortunately. We'll eventually get it together.
I recently viewed a video of Dr Carol Anderson speaking to an audience at University of Dayton. Her topic was white rage. I found this study on her subject interesting because i have first hand experience in some of the specific points she targeted. Firstly, i was born in NYC my dads side originally from Barbados. Of course they migrated to Brooklyn New York. My dad enlisted in the military and had a 30 year distinguished carrer with rank. My mom is from Va.she met my father when he was stationed at Ft Lee in Petersburg Va. My grandparents on my moms side were a different breed of black people for that era. They own 200 acres of land, they never share cropped and my grandparents were self sufficient he owned his own sawmill, he had orchards on our land EVEN INDOOR TOILETS IN THE 50S when so called decent white folk were trotting to outdoor toilets. I spent a lot of my life in school in NYC but in my beginning high school years, i wanted to move south with family. In NY i was on lockdown because my parents were strict and i was not going to be in the streets. What i found when i moved south it was right st the point of forced busing, even the so called good white schools were way behind what i had gotten up north. Some 8th grade classes in NY were junior classes in the south. For example in 6th grade in NYC we had mechanical drawing, drafting and engineering disciplines. Never got those classes in the south we got woodworking, mechanics, Brickmasonsry, plumbing. The real smart o es got Electrician and HVAC. I actually played against the school she mentioned in Prince Edward County it was R R Morton. They literally closed the school and many went to a neighboring county to continue school. Lastly, the good Professor then began to speak to the war on drugs. She so ardently mentioned Nixon, Regans and the Republican party's hand in the savagery war on drugs and the black community. Then she jumps to the late 90s and our hearts are wrecked because of the story one cop pinned on a portion of our community when o e was a pig farmer, one was at work, another in a different place at a bank, all for drugs! Before i scream this allow me to reiterate i am a black man, a very accomplished black man. I FIND IT INSULTING AS WELL AS DISINGENUOUS TO STAND AND TALK ABOUT WHAT REPUBLICANS DID AS FAR AS THE WAR ON DRUGS WHEN THE LATE 90S INCIDENT WAS THE CLEAR RESULT F THE 1994 CRIME BILL WRITTEN BY JOE THE BIGOT BIDEN AND DIRECTED AT THE BLACK COMMUNITY THEN SIGNED INTO LAW BY BILL CLINTON. WE ARE SICK OF THESE DEMOCRATIC PUPPETS TRYING TO PISS ON OUR HEADS AND TELL US PUT YIUR UMBRELLA UP, ITS IT'S RAINING. THE TRUTH IS WHITE RAGE AGAINST US IS ON THE RIGHT AND THE LEFT TWO WINGS ON THE SAME DAMN BIRD. BIDEN, SANDERS. HARRIS, NONE OF THEM ARE FOR OUR COMMUNITY WE ARE NO WORSE OF WITH TRUMP. REMEMBER FERGUSON AND TRAYVON MARTIN HAPPENED UNDER OBAMA'S WATCH. WHAT DID HE SAY? NOT BLACK LIVES MATTER HE SAID. BLUE LIVES MATTER. OBAMA A DEMOCRAT THAT SHOWED UP IN FLINT MICHIGAN AND THE PEOPLE JUST KNEW THE PRESIDENT WAS GOING TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND THE BASTARD DRINKS A SIP OF WATER BEFORE THE CRINGING CROWD AND SAYS THE WATER IS FINE AND THEY ARE STILL DRINKING BAD WATER. PEOPLE THAT CALL OBAMA THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT FAIL TO RECOGNIZE HE IS A WHITE AS HE IS BLACK IN FACT HE IS DICK CHENEY'S COUSIN. GO FIGURE. IS HE THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OR THE FIRST BIRACIAL PRESIDENT? BIG DIFFERENCE.
Thank You Carol Anderson And Trevor Noah. All Who Have Seen This Should Make Sure To Vote In November! GOTV Meaning GET OUT THE VOTE! HERE AND NOW! SEE YOU AT THE POLLS!
"You create an obstacle. Then you create an obstacle to the obstacle." She summed up the struggle perfectly. Because if you're a person of limited resources, your resources will be exhausted before you make it through all the obstacles.
How much ID does anyone need? Anything ought to do: birth certificate, driver's license, passport, bank statement, insurance card - God knows that's hard enough to come by these days, pay stub along with any of the above...Master Card, Visa, credit report...what else or combined ought to be adequate without the government indulging in wasting yet more money on something that can be counterfeited?
Thank you, Trevor. I don't know why I haven't seen Carol Anderson on more interviews. Democrats and other media should spotlight these facts and talking points on voter suppression.
My white son got caught in the miasma of identity card replacement in Mississippi. It was an insane nightmare!! He had lived in Mississippi, then moved to Hawaii, then lost all his ID. He literally was told he couldn't get his drivers' license without his birth certificate or his birth certificate without his drivers' license. It was the most ridiculous, insane instance of bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake that I'd seen in many years. Luckily for my son, he was born in Maryland and we could navigate around the ridiculous roadblocks. I kept asking "What do people do who are born in Mississippi?" The officials I spoke to didn't have an answer to that! Seriously! This happened in 2017!
I don't think it's hate. The way a lot of Republicans talk about the people they like to ignore sounds more like colonial-era condescension. "Oh, they are so dumb. They can't even vote for the correct party, which is us. They are like children who don't know what's best for them. So we have to overrule them, until they're old enough to realise that we were right all along. Then we might even let them vote again."
This is crazy! Totally crazy. I’m in Sweden. Here a driving license or a regular id, counts as a id. If you are over 18 you got one. When it’s time to vote you get a voting card by mail. And the voting place will be within walking distance from your house, as long as you don’t live some where in the wilderness. And all your friends will be on your ass and ask you if you voted. If you don’t do it they’ll be like fuck is wrong with you?!
I hate when people say that they dont vote. Especially women and people of color. Our ancestors worked too hard to secure our right because of how important it is. I know it can feel hopeless but at the end of the day whoever becomes president or ends up in congress have very real power and are usually polar opposites so why not vote for the one more likely to help you and your family. Plus if you don't vote you have a higher chance of somebody completely unqualified coming into office because people like you werent there to oppose them. Please vote. Its how our democracy works. We all have a voice that deserves to be heard.
In Malaysia, we had very similar problems. The people staged peaceful protests (BERSIH - which means ‘clean’) demanding for FREE and FAIR elections a few years in a row. We were tear-gassed, hosed down with water cannons, the whole works. Finally, this year on May 9, we toppled the corrupt government that had ruled the country for decades. All through the power of the vote. And the power of the people who volunteered to be polling agents throughout the country. And a movement that helped mobilize voters to get to their polling stations. And a persuasive Opposition party (who governs the country now). And much more. Anything can happen when the people band together with a common goal.
As a Non American, I'm genuinely stumped by the American voting system. If I want to vote in my country (Austria), I don't need to register, or even actively do anything but wait for my voting letter, addressed to every person of voting age that is situated in my country. In the letter you can find the address of your nearest voting booth and alternate options if you cannot make it there personally (like postal voting, which is especially popular with elderly, sick or abroad citicens).
In Kenya we also register to vote...but unlike the USA, We are actually begged to register. Voting registration happens for like 3 months before the elections. New voters can register, if you have moved you can register to a new polling station, if you already registered in the previous election, you can check your polling station again. You can check your registration details via SMS. but then Again, why would we need to stop some people from voting?
I sincerely don't understand this... I'm Portuguese, the moment I turned eighteen I automatically became registered to vote. If you change your residence, the moment you give that information to the State, you're automatically registered to vote in your new area, and so on... Even for citizens of other European Member States, that are allowed to vote on local elections in the area of their residence, is easy. It seems a bit ridiculous to me that in such a developed and technologically able country there are not these kinds of mechanisms in place. I had no idea this was still happening!
Damn, She explained Alabama Voter Suppression so accurately. The DMVs in so many states are run inefficiently and have outdated rules. The distances between certain communities and the lack of adequate public transportation is just sad.
Before the 2016 election, North Dakota declared that tribal IDs were valid for voting in the state. Thousands of Native Americans are not allowed to vote because they can't get a state ID because reservations don't have addresses. They get all their mail through the post office that is on the reservation. Most people think it is retaliation for the pipeline protests.
“creating obstacle” is such an importantly understated notion. That powerful people are not creating opportunities, but obstacles for everyone else to fail.

In Massachusetts, you don't need an ID to vote or to register to vote. You do need a social security number, though, if you don't have a state-issued ID. To remain active on the voters list, you need to answer the annual census and/or vote at the local, state, or federal elections. If you don't do either of those, you become inactive and have to show ID when you vote. They keep the you in the system for two presidential election cycles, so that's eight years you have to do SOMETHING. And if you can't make it to the polls, you can vote absentee by getting a ballot mailed to you. If you're oversees, they cam email you a ballot, too. And recently they added early voting for federal and state elections where you can show up to vote as if it were a regular Election Day. There's almost no excuse not to be able to vote.
Why not have people eligible to vote put automatically on the voters roll and removed automatically on death. You have one national voters roles (storing regional and local attributes). Your regional and local voters register attributes are derived from the last address presented, when you move you present your new address (this presentation of attributes can be done continuously, at any time of the year). You become a registered voter for life regardless of your previous voting activities.
They did (this year I think) start automatic voter registration at the RMV, whereas before it was only an option. Clerks have to manually take deceased people off the rolls once they get the death certificate in. I don't think Massachusetts is really behind in the elections division, but there is still so much we can change. Our secretary of state is up for reelection, and I know there was at least one other contender with new ideas to improve the system, but we'll see where things go after the midterms.
@@steggiec in South Africa the system is maintained at a national level, by the Independent Electral Commission (IEC), which has the task of maintaining and updating the voter's register on a continuous basis. All South African citizens (even the naturalised), including prisoners and diaspora are allowed to vote.
I lived in a part of my city that had very few registered voters, but a whole lot of illegals. I would go to my polling place on my way to work, and the same little old poll workers were always there. I never had to show I.D., we greeted each other courteously, I voted, and went on my way. Then state law changed, and we were required to show I.D. I went with driver's license in hand, was greeted by the same little old poll worker, when a woman I'd never seen before stepped up to the table, leaned over and said out loud "Make sure you check her I.D." He leaned back in his chair, looked up at her, and stated clearly that "Miz Cass has been a most faithful voter, and considering she's the only woman in the group of 5 who vote regularly, we're pretty certain she is who she is". Before the woman could respond, I said, "I don't mind showing my I.D. I came prepared. But, I don't want to be the ONLY person asked for I.D." With eyes wide open, staring at me, she backed away and went and sat down with another woman I'd also never seen at that particular polling place before. We both watched her, then looked at each other. "Thank you, Miz Cass", he said. "Thank you, Mr. ----", I replied. "You have a good day, you hear? he said. I replied, "Thank you sir. You as well." I went to the booth, reviewed the workings with the same old-timer who was also always there, then went on my way to work. Anybody believe that here in the Midwest BS doesn't happen, even when you have I.D.? I have a bridge for sale.

I always wondered why we didn't just have an app that had to take your picture and thumb print to vote. People's time would be freed up and more people could vote and we'd even get the lazy people to vote,
This would not be a good idea. Seeing how the first method of subduing blacks is to criminalize everything... I gather that something seemingly benign (this idea) would be used to do the same.
Textbook voter suppression all the same plan. Organized by corporations at ALEC, and implemented into law by republican legislators members of ALEC as well. At all levels, locals, state, Fed.

Don't tell Trump's supporters you are an Indonesian.

Both parties are bad, but not equally so. The Democrats are a party with many flaws, the Republicans are a bunch of flaws that somehow formed a party.

This was such an amazing interview

8:39 reminds me of the German story of the Hauptmann von Köpenick (Captain of Köpenick), where a daylabourer tried to get housing in Köpenick, but couldn't without ID, and couldn't get ID without an address. He ended up buying a captain's uniform from a costume shop, took command of some soldiers, went to the authority and forced them to issue an ID to him.

Good topic. Thank uu
1# on the American agenda should be fixing the prison and criminal system which will have a domino effects on everything else
Smiles we do not the minorities that is have the most in prison. unlike you I’ve worked in the prison system in multiple states and what your referencing is a lie that is continually told to Americans but this just isn’t so education is the key as most American kids nowadays refuse to read anything that’s not on a computer
brandon wright 34% are African Americans according to the FBI which is the largest percentage out of all
This is nothing new to me Republican party has been doing stuff like this for years. Now they just out in the open with it.

This woman, Professor Carol Anderson, is so brilliant and one of the most underrated academic scholars alive.

We don't actually need any ID to vote. The restrictions are there to prevent people from voting.
Seriously! This happened in 2017!
the level of hate Republicans develop towards minorities leaves me speechless
I don't think it's hate. The way a lot of Republicans talk about the people they like to ignore sounds more like colonial-era condescension. "Oh, they are so dumb. They can't even vote for the correct party, which is us. They are like children who don't know what's best for them. So we have to overrule them, until they're old enough to realise that we were right all along. Then we might even let them vote again."
@@armedwombat6816 why would anyone suppress your basic right ...To vote ....if not because of hate....
Great show
Trevor , consistently sit with some wonderful people and allow us to come to know them a bit better,Thank you
I hate when people say that they dont vote.
Carol Anderson is BRILLIANT 👏🧡
He has become a truly superior interviewer.

This is so frightening and horrendous. The targeting of the poor, those on public assistance, those that are minorities...it's diabolical :(
I just ordered this book...very excited to read!
We still have time, check with your register to make sure you are still listed. You can still re-registered and vote in november. Don't delay.

But, I don't want to be the ONLY person asked for I.D."
With eyes wide open, staring at me, she backed away and went and sat down with another woman I'd also never seen at that particular polling place before.

Which is just further proof that Trump has never _(literally,_ never) had to go buy his own groceries. The only time you actually need ID when buying groceries is if you're buying alcohol or nicotine. For food? Why would they need to verify your ID if you're buying _food?_
