I drove once through Ft Stockton back in 1983 on I10 from Jacksonville Florida to El Paso Texas.
As soon as I entered Fort Stockton. I ran out of gas! I was driving a 1980 Camaro and hauling a U-Haul!
The nearest gas station was about three blocks away, my car went on total lock down.
But I put the gear on drive, and pushed the car to the gas station! When two nice young cowboys.
In their pickup truck stop next to me and ask me to get back in my car. And they would push the car to the gas station.
I filled up my tank with gas, I went inside the store, bought two six packs of beer, paid for the gas.
Gave them one six pack, Thank them and parted ways. It took me 27 hours to drive straight through I10.
Great video of my hometown . Thank you for recording it and posting . You showed the very best of Historic Fort Stockton . My grandmother was a local pioneer , having been born there in 1864 .
I live Fort Stockton
In 1870 age 65 my great, great grandpa Thomas Jacquez was oldest person at fort Stockton what a small world
This brings back memories.
Back in the 70's just portions of the freeway was built meaning this road was a two lane road between Van Horn and Junction.
For me driving west this is the place where we get our first tank of gas.
Glad to see that the DQ is in the same place
Thanks for this ride through Fort Stockton, Kyle.
And also for the information about it, much appreciated.
Greets from the Netherlands.
Thanks for the tour of the city. The fact that it's the largest town on I-10 between El Paso & San Antonio really shows how desolate the Interstate once you leave El Paso on it Eastbound. Nevertheless, there's some interesting places in the town- including a Bush's Chicken which looks like it has interesting food. Too bad they're not currently present in the state of CA.
& now, we continue the journey Eastwards on I-10! Can't wait to see it!
Ft. Stockton is an "oasis" town. Before I-10 bypassed the town, US 67 and 290 used to enter the town with I-10 temporarily ending at each end of the town. When I-10 was completed, US 67 followed I-10 and US 290 was truncated to its start east of Junction.
I thought it will be the western terminus of future I-14. I-14 was supposed to serve 7 states for 1,600 miles from Fort Stockton Texas to Wilmington North Carolina.
@@davidtosh7200 I-14 is now slated to go through San Angelo to Midland/Odessa from what I read.
Fort Stockton Texas is the western terminus of I-14 to Augusta Georgia as of eastern terminus for 1,300 miles, and serving 5 states. Yes. There will be several of auxiliary routes of I-14, such as I-114 which connect from I-14 in Brady Texas to I-20 in Midland Texas, and I-214 which loop through Austin Texas, since the population of Austin Texas over 1,000,000 and only have one interstate highway which is I-35, and it is rapidly growing for the next 10 years from now (between 2020 and 2030).
Kyle, thank you so much for this!. I hope you went south into the Davis Mountains. A beautiful and rugged area well worth your time. I too remember as a little pup being with my parents on the unfinished portions of I-10 in this area. My, how times have changed. Oh, and the Balmorhea swimming hole and state park is a jewel.
I’d love to visit that area someday. Thanks for the suggestion!
Once you pass Ft. Stockton heading west you start to see the first sight of mountains, the mountains are endless on I-10 for the remainder of the drive all the way to Santa Monica. it really starts to feel more desert past Ft Stockton.
You are correct!
That area was part of where I would deliver blue rhino propane bottles for 9 years. Down to alpine Marfa presidio ft Davis balhmorhea and pecos
love western texas 🇺🇸
If you're in town and hungry, it's Tacos OJ or Pepitos.
That bushs in fort stockton is covered in black mold
I live in San Antonio and we would visit relatives in El Paso once a year. Ft.Stockton was always a place to get gas and food. There was a good Steakhouse called K-Bobs. Not sure if it is still there as it's been at least ten years since I've been through there.
Still there.
I worked there as dishwasher about 18 years ago.
K-Bobs thru the '80s, '90s and beyond. Same place, same aromas as of Jan 2024. Not my favorite but worth a stop every few trips through town.
We stop there on our way to Yuma Az. Small town.
Been there many times. It seems to be growing a little bit. Not the population. Just a few newer hotels here & there. A few new convenience stores too. Maybe someday they'll open a movie theater there. Its a nice town. & is a reasonable distance from (Balmorhea State Park).........
The old Apache Theater's tin-shed building is still at Front & 17th Street. In July-August, 'rainy season' hits with some awesome thundershowers in late afternoons, day after day. I bet the patrons couldn't hear the movie during the height of those afternoon storms. "Have no fear - it will all pass by in 15 minutes... time for a break!" ha ha
I wonder what happened to the old Manure Mountain on the southwest edge of town? That quadrant of town used to be the Rich Side of town, but that aroma from a huge, constantly-burning mound of manure, piled up over the decades... no sign of that? Even Google Maps doesn't show it (I think it was on that western edge of Railroad. Did someone clear it out and move the stuff to all over West Texas? Would have made some interesting top 'soil'.
I found some of the best hole-in-the-wall eateries away from Dickinson. Great places and of course no I-10'ers would ever find. It was all repeat business from locals who kept coming back. I suspect they've all changed hands or ?? since the 1990s. One of my favorites was at the 'Y' split of Main Street and Imperial Highway, just south of I-10. It's called The Burrito Express now, and they've even put in a drive-thru. They even have a Facebook page with a lot of photos of their meals.
HOW do you expect US to see the layout of the town when you're running the camera at 80 mph , when the speed limit is probably 30mph ! Are you looking for a rest room so you can pee ?
You drove about 50 ' from where we live.
I never been to Fort Stockton TX
Nice town
Interesting
Christ that place looks like an ugly little nowheresville. Nice video
Ya gotta love the sky in this part of the world. And the landscape is as pretty or prettier at night. ha ha... but seriously, this is Milky Way territory... get away from 'city lights' about 10 miles on a small road, and see kajillions of stars. After 20 minutes out there, our eyes adjusted and we hoped the moon would not be anywhere close to full because the starlight would be bright enough to pick out pebbles and bugs. And yeah, cycling and walking cross country begged for lower-leg protection from the cat-claw vines. Yeow.
I was born in Ft Stockton
Does Kyle think that the human inhabitant populations in the State of Texas will exceed them in the State of California?
I think within the next 25 years more people will live in Texas than California. California is losing population while Texas is gaining a lot of people.
I live and Fort Stockton
Still live there? What happened to Manure Mountain in the southwest of town? Near the middle-school?
