Scotty Kilmer I have 123000 on my 2014 ecoboost f150 and I absolutely love it. I haven’t had any problems yet but I’m getting worried due to what I see on the internet. My question is are there steps to take to avoid these problems? My truck runs as strong as it did new. I just put an oil catch on it. I change my oils and ignition components when my book suggests. What more can I do?

I have an 2011 f150 with the 3.5 ecoboost and it now has 370,000 miles on it with few issues. The biggest thing you need to remember on this engine is you have to use a very good synthetic oil and filter otherwise they’re problematic. I use Amsoil signature series oil with their 25,000 mile oil filter and I change it every 12,000 miles. I have zero oil consumption, zero timing issues and I still average 17 mpg and it sees 95/100 mph on a weekly basis.

    • @brucejohnson1264
      @brucejohnson1264 Год назад +5

I wouldn't recommend such long intervals between oil changes. Condensation will get in there, as will combustion products, and no oil can magically remove contaminants. I change no less than every 6 months (especially in the spring since winter is when things get lots of condensation), or 4k-6k miles, whichever comes first.

12,000?! Amsoil or otherwise you’re lucky to have reached 200k without major work. I’ve done a 2,000 mile oil change on the 3.5 and the oil is already DARK. Like any turbo motor these are not long interval engines. They’re very powerful and long lasting but they are not tolerant of long oil change intervals. If it were me I’d spend half the money on the oil and change it twice as often, and with an OEM filter

My ecoboost 2016 3.5 has been tuned since 12k miles. Ran hard, towing across country many trips, maintains and still runs great at 167k miles of long hauls. My Chevy 5.3 didn’t make it that long with a trans rebuild, some electrical issues, a fuel pump and two alternators. Way more power, way more. Better driving and running vehicle with zero mechanical issues aside from a bad sensor which was simple to replace. I’ll stick with my ecoboost.

Not sure you can compare a Chevy with a Ford. You'd have to go Ford vs Ford I think. I'm looking at the 2.7 btw. I'm not sure if I would need more than 400 lb/ft torque. Good to know you can haul. That's my concern that it will give way after hauling for a while.

The trucks took it like a champ. Also I learned a regular F150 3.5TT can jump like a raptor, just don't expect the landing to be comforable, still more comfortable than a HMMWV though.

The main problem guys like scotty have with them is they are too complicated for the average guy to work on. These guys grew up working on Chevy 350s and they appreciate push rod design for simplicity and ease of maintenance. Plus there are just as many folks out there with 60k on a EcoBoost needing valvetrain repair as there are ones with 150k

But not problemless.its parked.i now have a 2019 ford ranger, 4 cylinder, 10 speed automatic.9000 miles on it. I drive like an old lady, conservative, 6000 aprox. Miles a year. Im sure paid too much for it. Anything more than 10,000.00 is too for any vehicle. Like paying a blind doctor to work on you. You never know what you are getting. If this lasts 12 yrs, goes at least 90,000 miles, ill be happy. 12 years goes really fast. Like ripe fruit in the fridge. And weeds in the garden. But now, i have your videos to keep me informed. It was problem free throughout the time that I owned it but sold it at around 50k miles as I didn't need the quad cab 6.5 ft bed 4wd heavy duty FX model any longer. The truck had gobs of power anytime you needed it, was very smooth quiet and comfortable to drive long distance and got great gas mileage. I always used full synthetic oil and being turbo charged I never immediately shut it down after driving it hard on trips or with heavy loads. I always let the turbos cool for a bit so that they weren't still red hot at shutdown.

The main thing with the Ecoboost (3.5 for sure at least) is STAY ON TOP OF YOUR OIL CHANGES! They need good clean oil. I hate to agree with assclown scotty but every ecoboost is a disaster waiting to happen. Sure, 5 people in the comments have had "zero issues" with theirs but they are the only ones. All of these vehicles are specifically engineered to be junk in 5-7 yrs so that you buy a new one.

Thanks for the video again. I have a small business and have a F150 16' 3.3L v6 and hile its been reliable its disappointing on MPG, maybe too much weight for the v6. ITs time for another new truck and I really like the ecoboost but for a work truck and small business, I will leaning towards the 5.0 Coyote v8 for long term consistent v8 power and less parts to go wrong one day eventually with about 150-200k miles later.

@@adityadesai763 Ours has been an outstanding vehicle. Nothing fancy just the XLT 4x4 Ecoboost extended cab with long bed. The truck gets used, not abused and has been great with no problems. Were I you, I would find out the history of the truck you are looking to purchase. Find out how it has been used, and if it has had any issues before you buy. What the mileage is and what type of driving put that mileage on the truck. Check very well for rust and any body damage. If it has a plastic bed liner check under it for rust, they trap water and cause the bed to rust. Find out if the truck has been parked under cover or just out in the weather. Find out the gear ratio, ours is 3:31, if I had it to do over again I would have gone with 3:55 as it would have pulled better.

The Ford F-250 6.2 gasser is fine, as is the RAM 2500 with the 6.4 gasser. The RAM has cylinder deactivation for regular highway driving so it'll help on mpgs. Both are nice trucks though and will handle a larger travel trailer with no problems.

If you are going for a new truck, I agree to definitely stay above 150/1500 trucks. 250/2500 is the lowest I would go. Also, for stability's sake, depending on how large of an RV you decide to get, I would honestly opt for a 350/3500 truck with dual rear wheels, as when driving down the road and passing semis (or being passed by them), you will notice that the trailer will try to control you a LOT. Especially the larger the trailer is. Dual rear wheels will help eliminate/reduce the so-called, "Tail-wagging the dog" syndrome. Ford's newest diesel isn't too bad, either. No head bolts stretching on these newest iterations. The 6.0L was notorious for that, which is why Ford decided to start building it in-house instead of outsourcing it from International. You should have nothing to worry about there. If you're buying older, my personal opinion is to get a 7.3L if you're buying Ford. Their gas engines just drink too much, in my opinion.
If you go Chevrolet, you won't improve much on fuel efficiency, but their gas engines are all pretty solid. They've been sticking with the same general design for years, and they have worked out a lot of the kinks. Good overall trucks. Just watch out for electrical stuff.
Dodge/Ram has the Cummins diesel. I would not go for their gas engines. Transmissions are notorious for dying on Chrysler products. Just be very aware of that.
Other than that, and what others have said here, that's pretty much all the advice I can muster for truck buying. I worked for Ford for years, but I am not biased (too much) toward them. I just know their products very, very well.
Cheers, and best of luck! If you need any more specific info, especially about the Fords, just ask! I have a fair wealth of knowledge about them.
      ~Sir Timothy
