- A highly anticipated vote on the Sacramento Zoo's plan to relocate to Elk Grove took place Wednesday night, giving the plan its green light. The Elk Grove City Council voted on five items related to the zoo project. Items one through four passed unanimously, but the sticking point was item number five regarding the project. That item was connected to the financing of the project. Councilmember Kevin Spease asked for more assurances and an oversight committee to protect taxpayers. Other council members pushed back, saying those concerns were not previously brought up. That agenda item ended up passing with a 4-1 vote. The city's financial director will now work with the Sacramento Zoological Society to finalize the terms of the financial agreement. "I want this to be a strong message that we are ready to fundraise and make this a reality," said Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen. "That Elk Grove can dream big and we're going to build that zoo." The zoo will continue to raise money to fund its portion of the project. As of Wednesday, the zoo had raised $15 million, but needs to reach $50 million. Zoo officials hope to have the new zoo up and running by 2029.
