Took PTX, 5 years to feel sure and perfect it, in order to feel like they could do justice to Queen and do a great tribute to them. The sky/stars pays homage to Brian May and the four falling starts represents the 4 members of Queen.

This is definitely Queen's song. I don't think anyone is going to rival the feeling Freddie put into it. PTX did their version, and it wows me every time I hear it, stunning talent working so well together.

    Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody Insights:
So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen.
Some of the moments paying respect were:
1.The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded),
    2. Obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video,
    3. The four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist,
    4. The overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover.
    5. When Mitch lies down on the couch, singing "Too late, My time has come," they're referring to Freddie Mercury's death (the foreshadowing was, of course, unintentional on Freddie's part; there's no way he could have known about AIDS, thank goodness). The other four are walking next to the couch to serve as Mitch's pall bearers.
The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do.
Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve.
They were indeed on an actual road and luckily, there actually is a behind the scenes for the making of this one that you can watch! The link is: ruclips.net/video/Q8ugJnIG_Lk/видео.html
Also when Brian Mays heard it... he posted it on his web site with the word "ENJOY”.
The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on RUclips, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing.

PTX paid respect to Queen by Opening and Closing in the same position. Also the 4 Streaks across the night sky was to represent the 4 members of QUEEN.

The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC!
Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy. You can see Mitch with the Freddie mustache doing Somebody to Love on a Queen special that was on ABC a few years ago.

The audio panning on "little high, little low" is a direct quote from Queen. If you listen to Queen's original release you'll hear the same panning on the same phrase.
#Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they always wanted to cover this song, but they feared that they couldn't do it justice, so they decided to wait until they were sure they were ready. That took them five years, but it was worth the wait - they were definitely ready.
In the early days of Pentatonix, after Epic reneged on the recording contract Pentatonix had "won" on _The Sing-Off,_ Pentatonix started posting to RUclips; it was the only way they COULD publish their music. A lot of those early RUclips videos show the five of them sitting on a couch, with the trio on the back of the couch and Avi and Kevin on the seat in front of them, just five very young people singing their hearts out, making their dream come true. Note that this is the configuration we see them in at the beginning and end of "Bohemian Rhapsody," which is one reason the couch needs to move - it's taking Pentatonix (and us) on a trip down Memory Lane.
The more important reason the couch moves is that it's standing in for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole new generation to the genius of Queen by putting a tape of "Bohemian Rhapsody" into the car's tape player.
The couch was motorized, and not very well balanced. (Note that when they're sitting on it their feet don't quite reach the ground. The little curtain thing on the bottom was added to hide the motor.) It kept trying to tip over during the filming and actually managed to throw Kevin off at one point. There was a small platform attached to the back so that Kirstin could climb on the couch from behind - Scott, being a foot taller than Kirstin, didn't need it.
No, the megaphone isn't distorting Mitch's voice to make it sound more like an electric guitar. It wasn't turned on, and couldn't have distorted Mitch's voice even if it had been - it was just a megaphone. The electric guitar is all Mitch. Mitch happened to see the megaphone lying around on the set and thought it would make a cool prop, so it's been confusing people ever since. Also, they weren't actually recording the audio when they recorded this video - they were lip-synching to the audio they'd already recorded in the studio. They may have distorted Mitch's voice slightly on the guitar solos, but the key word is "slightly." If you listen to a live performance the guitar solos are darn close to identical, and the megaphone is entirely absent.
During the "Bismillah" argument, note that Scott, whose range includes both bass and tenor registers, is actually singing along with both the high and low sides of the argument. Scott has said that this rapid switching is the hardest part of the song for him.
When the camera pans up to show us the starry night sky during Mitch's second guitar solo, it's meant as a tribute to Queen's lead guitarist, Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics.
The four shooting stars honor the four members of Queen.
When the camera pans back down to show Pentatonix lying on the couch together it's meant to recall the cover art for Queen's "Sheer Heart Attack" album.
And when this official video was first released, Brian May posted a link to it on all his social media accounts with the comment: "Enjoy."

I think of this as a PTX cover, rather than one of their more standard "upgrades". Hard to upgrade near perfection. But PTX puts an a cappella spin on the song, and definitely pays tribute to the original recording and video.
Mitch doesn't really use the megaphone to produce any guitar sounds - it's there strictly as a visual cue for people watching the video to show who is making the guitar sounds. When he sings this song in concert (which happens pretty regularly), he just sings into his mic like he does all the rest of the song.

You've now hit the trifecta of their most reacted to covers. You could literally just pick any song from their catalogue n react to it, you wouldn't be disappointed.
That being said, I recommend the following (no particular order):
    Sound of silence
    Imagine
Can't hold us (Macklemore and Ryan Lewis), also Thrift Shop
    Sing (original)
    Problem (Ariana Grande)
The other Evolutions (particularly the evolution of music)
Also their Pop Spring performance, which has 3 originals and the Evolution of MJ live. It's a long one but well worth it.
That should be enough to get you started. I always recommend reactors go back to the beginning, tho. Please consider reacting to their performances on The Sing-off, in order please. That way you get to see their progression. They've gotten better and better over the years. Won 3 Grammys (nominated for 5).

If you wanna see another great tribute for Bohemian Rhapsody with musical instruments, take a look Forestella's version. They were a brand-new group at that time (in Forestella Queen's best songs compilation video on KBS Jeonju channel you can see the very first performed Bohemian Rhapsody by Forestella) and they had only 2~3 weeks for preparing the performance. You will thank me for letting you know Forestella!

Avi is a bass. He’s not singing bass. He is a bass singer. Actually he is a basso profundo which means he can go extremely low. He trained to sing opera.
I recommend that you listen to some of the live performances of Bohemian Rhapsody and other Pentatonix performances.

  • @charlottevan_8
    @charlottevan_8 6 месяцев назад +3

How does a bass sing like that? Well, when you're an opera/classical voice-trained basso profundo (who had been offered a position as a bass with the Los Angeles Opera just before he was recruited into PTX), you develop depth, control and timbre, which Avi has in spades. Here's a recent example of his bass, as a solo artist - the Sunset Sound Session version of his original "When I'm a Fool", from 2022, backed by some of :LA's best studio musicians and producer Shooter Jennings, ruclips.net/video/LE24UTH3pmQ/видео.html

This is possibly the only cover of PTX's that I don't consider to be better than the original, and that's only because perfection cannot be improved upon. That being said, I do consider this to be the best cover of Bohemian Rhapsody in existence.

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 6 месяцев назад +1

10:53 "How do you sing in bass? He's singing in bass." I'm not sure, but I believe you're asking how Avi is singing both the bass rhythm line and "Any way the wind blows" at the same time. If so, the answer is that this is the one cheat you will regularly encounter in #Pentatonix releases. They use layering to enhance their songs.
This is a PTX official video. That means that they recorded their parts in the studio, for release on an album, and they're actually lip-synching to that recording in the video. It makes sense; it would basically be impossible to record audio this good on location. But Pentatonix decided early on that it's worth a small cheat to improve their albums, so in the studio the bass, whether Avi or Matt, actually records two tracks. One track is the bass rhythm line for the entire song, and the other track is whatever solos he has in the song, and then they layer the second track on top. They also occasionally enhance Kirstin's and Mitch's voices with a bit of layering.
In live performances Scott will take over the bass rhythm line whenever the bass has a solo, but that doesn't apply to official videos.
If, on the other hand, you're asking how Avi can be singing so high when he's a basso profundo, the answer is that his range is a good deal greater that that - Avi's range extends upward to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Matt goes even higher than that.

I'm a new sub after listening to three of your PTX reactions. Since it appears you have started down the acapella rabbit hole. I recommend you also check out "Home Free" They are also a very good group that has a slight country twang, but covers a wide range of music including R&B. A good introduction to them is Ring of Fire which Avi from PTX is a guest singer, and if you need something less serious the "Butts Remix" is awesome.

Regarding the way they split the lead up on this song, did I mention that #Pentatonix are huge Queen fans, and even bigger Freddie Mercury fans? Yes, Freddie had an incredible range, so it makes sense to split the lead up, but that doesn't explain why Kevin was singing along with Mitch on that last "Any way the wind blows." I think that EVERYONE in Pentatonix wanted to take the lead in "Bohemian Rhapsody," so rather than argue about it they just arranged it so that everyone got to take a turn.

Nobody does this song better than Queen. Even with the original recording being 50 years old, it still smashes any other version of it that has been done since. Pentatonics is a great group. Bohemian Rhapsody is not a good song for Queen to do live because they only have three vocalists so they can't give it the depth it deserves. They only did it live because fans begged for it and even then, they had to eliminate the acapella intro and the center section is from the recording. So it does not compare to the studio version.

  • @danielcarter837
    @danielcarter837 6 месяцев назад

I think this is the best cover of this song. It is not an upgrade of the original.
The amazing part is that they did it without instruments.
In regards to comparing the two I think you should have compared the studio versions and then maybe compare the live versions. The best PTX live version is probably the one from the Hollywood Bowl in 2022.
It is hard to compare the energy of a studio version to a live version. The live version will usually win.
