  • "Tired of the 9-5, working for the man? Need to get out in nature? If so, you are sane! The Piney Woods offers new places to ride, share good times with pals, and experience very little traffic. Palestine, Texas, our host town for the Camino105, is a great headquarters for your adventure!" - Camino205.com
    Circa 2019, the town of Palestine, Texas, served as the home base of the El Camino, a mixed-surface cycling event offering distances of 35, 65, and 105 miles. The event is due to run in September of 2021, but course options may be different at that time?
    "Palestine is a city in and the county seat of Anderson County in Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 18,712. Palestine was named for Palestine, Illinois, by preacher Daniel Parker. Another source says that it was named by migrant Micham Main for the same hometown" - Wikipedia
    "Palestine is a relatively small town located in the Piney Woods, equidistant from the major cities of Dallas, and Houston, Texas, and Shreveport, Louisiana. It is notable for its natural environment, including the dogwood floral blooming season, for having 23 historical sites on the National Register of Historic Places, and as the western terminus of the Texas State Railroad. This steam-and-diesel railroad museum operates tourist trains between Palestine and Rusk."
    In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew rides the 105-mile route, passing through the towns of Latexo, Grapeland, Elkhart, and back to Palestine. This challenging course is far from flat, featuring over 5,000 ft / 1,500 metres of climbing along the way. Riding it self-supported is additionally challenging, as the first town doesn't roll into sight until about km #113 / mile 70.

      East Texas gets much more rain than central or west Texas. And there's been excessive this year.

    I subscribed to your channel for the simple fact that when you are riding your bike I actually see wildlife like hogs and deer and foxy’s,And all other bicycle riding tours they don’t show stuff like that so yours is more realistic

    We rode the course just this past weekend and loved it. Except when a loose german shepherd bit my foot. But ANYWAY... it was an amazing ride! I think you rode it backwards, though? Everything I've seen shows it going counterclockwise and you did it the other way. Will you be at the race?

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  3 года назад

      Brett, I may have ridden an older version of the course, which did go clockwise. Uncertain about appearing at the race this year? Glad you enjoyed the ride, and a bit of a bummer about the loose mutley.

      @@GravelCyclist Thanks for the reply! Here is the route we rode from 2019 and it was fantastic. Lots of differences from yours, and no closed section. Thanks for all you do and keep it up! connect.garmin.com/modern/course/68973089

    Jom, what is the bike that you are riding in this vid? I like to see you riding vintage on occasion. That’s not to say that the new bling isn’t fascinating but I’m sure that there are a lot of folks who would like to fix up older cx bikes. I have an XO2 with cantilever brakes and 35 gravel kings on it and it is very capable. Enjoying the videos always. Keep up the good work!

    I can confirm that, that course in dry weather has the worst sand. It sucked and will never ride in that sand ever again

  • @owenshotts1829
    @owenshotts1829 3 года назад

    I have heard from riders of past years that the sandy sections were terrible and see a comment below about this. Your video didn't make it seem like sand was much of an issue. Can you share your perspective on the sandy sections? Not sure if the course has changed any over past years...

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  3 года назад +2

      I understand the 2021 courses may be skipping some of the sandy sections? Recent rain helped me cruise those sectors in the video, but having good skills is essential. For sandy / loose stuff, practice, staying loose, and a small gear helps. It's all about momentum, the moment you get bogged down, game over. See another of my videos where I use my experience in sand on 700c x 35mm tyres to close a gap quickly - ruclips.net/video/PoqB5vUOUKA/видео.html

      I had no problems riding 700c x 35mm Panaracer Gravelking SK's. An FYI, you can make anything work, do not overthink tyres. Good luck!
