    • @JEzra-cx7bx

      It's very simple. Just plug in a microphone to your audio interface and open up an audio track and press record.
      You dont need to hook up the talk box to Logic or anything. You will record the talk box the same way you record regular vocals.

    kinda weird question, but is it possible to use pre-made midi data on your DAW to use the talkbox, or does it have to be done with LIVE guitar/midi keyboard? (lemme know if more specification is needed)

    • @JEzra-cx7bx

      Its completely possible to do that! Its awesome that you brought it up because it would be a great way to automate the process so that you dont even have to use a keyboard, freeing up your hands to do something else or plan another instrument. It can even be used for beginners who cant play the keyboard, all they would have to do is download the midi file and just mouth the words in time with the song.
      Great question and I've been thinking of making a video explaining how to do that for a while now but dont know if anyone would be interested. If I end up making a video on this topic I'll give you a shout out 🙌

    Hi, J. Ezra 🍀 I've been interested in talk box recording for a very long time. I've also been working with Cubase Pro for a long time, but sometimes (and always have) had a little blockage when it comes to technical connections and virtual or analogue connections 😅. What I'm saying is that I'm not the great technician. But the way you explain it in your videos is a great help - and the way you answer the questions in detail and with heart is exemplary!
    I have an audio interface, a Rode microphone, a MIDI control keyboard without its own sound generator (Nektar LX 25 +) and many synthesizer VST plugins, each of which I can control with the Nektar keyboard, thus storing midi data in a midi track or "instrument track" can record.
    My question is how I would have to connect the Nektar keyboard (connected to the PC and Cubase via USB) to the talkbox in order to record the talkbox vocals in the DAW. Otherwise, the Nektar control keyboard has no other inputs or outputs such as headphones or audio out because the keyboard is connected via USB.
    It would also be very practical and a relief if I already had the midi data in the MIDI track because the sequence of notes played had already been recorded. The tone sequence is then played back via a synthesizer VST and can therefore be heard acoustically.
    In the second step, I would record the vocals via the microphone and exactly in the timing of the midi tone sequence, as I usually do. And the pitchpend data could be subsequently integrated into the MIDI track. This way you can probably concentrate better on these three steps.
    Or does it absolutely have to be a keyboard with a built-in tone generator? I would appreciate if you could shed some light on this (for me) darkness in due course. Thanks in advance. Many greetings.🎙🍻👍

      I reccomend getting a synthesizer instead of using a software instrument. It makes recording a lot easier with a regular synthesizer.
      Besides that, check out my Talk Box With MIDI Keyboard (Logic Pro) video and towards the end of that video I explain how to record the talk box with midi keyboard without getting feedback. You might still run into some problems because the midi keyboard way is not the ideal way to record a talk box.

      @JEzra-cx7bx  2 года назад

      Open up an audio recording track in cubase, then hook up your microphone to your computer. Test the mic by taking into it to make sure cubase is registering sound.
      Now separately from the computer, connect your talk box to your synthesizer. If you need a talk box patch for your synth you will need a sawtooth wave, set keys to monophonic and add a little bit of glide (portamento), that should give you a basic talk box patch.
      The last thing you need to do is just hit record on cubase, and sing into the microphone with the talk box.

    • @JEzra-cx7bx
      @JEzra-cx7bx  4 года назад +2

      I still have this problem occasionally so I can totally understand. I have learned that the weird sounding mouth noises go away as you practice more and more.
      I would say make sure the tube is in a comfortable position in your mouth and make sure there isnt a lot of spit in your mouth either. I get a weird spit kind of sound when the tube is too close to my cheek or when my tongue is blocking the tube hole.
      Make sure you enunciate each word as best you can, this will help make the singing sound better.
      Sometimes it's boring but I practice the same thing over and over again until I get it down. I'll take a break over night and then practice again the next day. The more you practice the better you will sound. I'm no expert though, I'm still learning and practicing every day.
      I hope this helps! Thanks for watching. I'll be releasing a "Talk Box Tips" video that will cover a bit of what you asked in the next few weeks so stay tuned for that!

    is it possible to record the talkbox into the DAW without using a microphone? • @JEzra-cx7bx
      @JEzra-cx7bx  3 года назад +3

      You need a microphone in order to record a talk box. It is impossible to record a talk box without a microphone because the sound comes out of your mouth and you need a microphone to capture the sound. You cannot plug in an instrument cable into the output of the talk box to try to record it because that is only the signal from the talk box, it is not the sound coming from your mouth.
      You need a talk box Patch for the microkorg. (I made a video for that) then you need to connect a microphone to your audio interface and open a audio track in your DAW. Then connect an instrument cable to the output on your microkorg to the input of your talk box.
      If you have a microkorg S you will need to turn off the built in speakers (I made a video for that).
      At that point when you play a key on the piano and have the tube in your mouth you should be able to hear sound coming from your mouth. From there all you have to do is press record on your DAW, and you can start recording.

      @JEzra-cx7bx  4 года назад

      Great question! So I used to plug it into the headphone jack and it worked the same as puyting it in the mono out jack.
      The reason I put it in the headphone jack at first was because the MicroKorg S had a speaker and when I put the cable into the mono jack the speaker would make a sound when I played the keys. When you are playing a talk box you want all the sound coming from the tube, not the speaker in the microkorg s. So after that I learned how to turn the speakers off on the microkorg s and then I was able to use the regular L/mono output jack. (This shouldn't be a problem if you have the regular oldschool microkorg because they dont have a speaker)
      So you can use either one really because both work, but I reccomend the regular L/MONO output jack.

      Hi Jenali, sorry for the late reply, youtube never notified me when you commented so I had no clue.
      You cant record a talk box with a midi keyboard through a DAW. It creates feedback in the microphone because the sound is being generated and recorded from the same source. The only way I could see this working is if you had an alternate recording device to sing into like a portable microphone recorder or maybe even opening up a separate app that let's you record audio.
      The best way to record a talk box is the regular traditional way which is what I showed in the video. It gives the best results and sound quality.
      The talk box with midi keyboard technique is good for practicing or maybe even a life setting, or if you dont have a hardware synth or forgot it. But it does not work if you want to record through the same DAW.

    So how does it work for live performance? Do you plug the talk box into the speaker or the keyboard? Or both? 😂

    • @JEzra-cx7bx
      @JEzra-cx7bx  3 года назад

      You would have to sing into a microphone and the microphone would be connected to a mixing board and PA system. You would record a talk box the same way you would record someone singing. Same applies to live performances.

    Why do I keep getting feedback from the talk box when I record?

    • @JEzra-cx7bx
      @JEzra-cx7bx  4 года назад +1

      In not sure why you're getting feedback, but make sure you dont have a cable connected to the output on the talk box and connected to your audio interface.
      Connecting the output of the talk box to your audio interface creates a feedback loop. A cable from your synths output should be connected to the input jack on your talk box and nothing else. Then you record yourself singing with a microphone connected to your audio interface and DAW.
      It can be a bit confusing but I'm here if you have any more questions or need more help.

      You need to mute the record track.

      Hey Jon if you are right about that it would be awesome! Haha, I've been too lazy to try and figure out why its creating feedback but if you solved the issue that would be great!

    So let me get this right, the headphone synth jack goes into the input of the talk box , the sound then comes out of the tube, which you shape the sound with your mouth and record it with a microphone. Can you use the audio output of the talkbox to record straight into your Audio interface > DAW .. or not ?

    • @JEzra-cx7bx
      @JEzra-cx7bx  3 года назад

      No, the audio is acoustic not digital. You need a microphone to record the sound coming from your mouth.

    • @JEzra-cx7bx

      Yes, if you have the gear go ahead and try it. Its basically how all talk box vocals are recorded. It it recorded the same way you would record an acoustic guitar or a vocal track.
