I've had the small bowl for a few years and I purchased the large bowl to keep at another home. I have to say I'm disappointed with the quality of the last bowl. Why is it that companies always try to cut down on quality in favor of profits when they come up with something good?

Never heard any complaints with the quality of the Captains Choice bowl over on the shaving forums. I agree with you though, and it is one of my pet hates when you buy from a company years back, and then years later they become a natural choice (as you were satisfied with the earlier purchase) and then you find out that quality has been lost, in favour of profits.

      Greed, that's why.

Sorry, but I don't get using lather bowls. The time spent lathering in a bowl would be better spent lathering on the face which would give more time softening the whiskers. Wouldn't that be a better use of time?

      Not every body does.
But, I prefer to build the lather in the bowl, as I can see the stage/condition of the lather, before I start applying it to my face. Plus, if I end up with too much lather in the brush, I can simply put some back in the bowl.
Whereas, building the lather on my face, for me (and I have persevered over time to make the comparison) the lather wasn't as good.
There's no "this method is right, this method is wrong" or "lather bowls are better than lathering on the face". Its whichever works best for that particular person. And for me, the lather bowl provides me with consistently better results than lathering on my face.

Well, time seems to be critical for you. If I was on your shoes I wouldn't shave at all and save the time instead.
I enjoy the pleasure I get from shaving everyday, different soaps, different scents, different brushes and so on, I take my time. I shave mostly with straight razors and shavettes and I never rush a shave for obvious reasons.

@@eminusipi You gotta admit it was kinda funny. The way you were saying about wasting time and talking about better use of time and he pointed out what he perceived as your apparent obsession with saving time and he said "if I were you I'd not shave at all" 🤭 I did laugh at that. I wouldn't really say it was snarky.. it was just witty/humorous. Pointing out to you in gentle, humorous way that time isn't everything.. as by the message you seemed to be in such a big hurry back when you wrote it five years ago. I much prefer using a lather bowl.. I'm somewhat of a traditionalist and well, that's how it was done by barbers all along since the 1700s. The whole face lathering seems to be a relatively new thing with the advances of softer soaps. I've never done face lathering. I struggle to believe one would get quite as good a lather by face lathering rather than make it up in a bowl.. I like to make the lather in the bowl and then apply it.. I feel there's a lot more control that way, you have it in a isolated environment to perfect it... only then apply you it. It's kinda like.. if you were going to paint a wall pink.. and you have your white paint and your red paint.. would you prefer to mix the paint up in a container until it is perfect and apply it as you liked with your brush in a controlled way or just splash all the paint on the wall and rub it around with the brush? You may save some time doing it the latter way but it's not the right way.. and the results likely wont be as good. Personally, I'd get a lot more satisfaction mixing it first with control rather than chaos. But of course, everyone is different. We need both control and chaos. Just like on the road.. some people prefer to drive around corners properly.. whilst others prefer to cut them and save a few seconds. It's just human nature to differ on these things. If you don't get using lather bowls and prefer your way that's fine but surely you can see why others like to use them? Likewise I don't "get" face lathering.. some say it causes unnecessary irritation due to excess scrubbing on the face which could be done in the bowl instead, others raise the hygiene question, especially if you load from the soap tub/puck.. your soap ideally should be isolated, so removing some from the tub and putting it in the lather bowl keeps it clean and free or bacterium from your brush/face.. repeatedly doing this can cause transfer and grow bacterium in the soap. It can be reduced if you just rub some of the soap over your face but you still have to deal with irritation due to making the lather up on the face. but I understand why others do this. I just don't get it, personally. Best wishes.

After a year which bowl do you use the most the regular or the large?

Would you use the regular or large one with a 31 mm brush?

Menno de Haas I’ve used the regular and large sized bowls with my Razorock Big Bruce (which has a 26 mm knot) and even the regular bowl was plenty big enough.
      Hope this helps.

Do you know if there are any UK artisans producing similar bowls?

      Hi Richard.
Executive Shaving Company sell ridge bottom bowls, there made for them by a local potter and come in a choice of colours. I've posted a link to them below. I got a chance to try one, but if I'm honest, the Captains Choice bowls are an overall better bowl in my opinion.

Thanks for that. Would prefer to support local potters if I can. Seems a shame the good stuff is all in USA!

      Your welcome.
It is a shame. Captains Choice does need to have some UK stockist of their products, as they sell a lot of excellent quality products, not just their bowls.
