Touhou 18 東方虹龍洞 ~ Unconnected Marketeers - Extra Stage Clear (No-Miss, No-Bomb, No-Actives)

- Extra stage of the new Touhou.
Clear without dying and bombing and not using any cards that cancel bullets.
For cards I just went full DPS. Marisa laser, Wolf for more damage and Centipede for more damage the longer you no-miss and no-bomb (to a max of x1.800).
The Centipede gets REALLY powerful if you can keep it going, it just melts things later in the stage.
Pretty fun Extra stage.
The stage portion is very peculiar and makes you do unusual things, which is good.
The boss patterns are also quite fun.
The Extra stage might be the highlight of this game really.
Stage is a bit buggy though.
The fairies at the end of the stage are bugged and fire stationary bullets.
The boss 2nd non also has a movement limit bug where it can go way too far down the screen than it's supposed to.
The boss can go as low as the red line here: cdn.discordapp.com/attachment...
This one is a lot more annoying.
Reimu is really good for this stage.
There's a lot of stuff that comes from behind in this stage and Reimu's homing can easily hit stuff behind her.
This stage has a lot of spells in it that remind me of Len'en spells lol.
Especially the midboss 2nd spell. It's a lot better designed here though because there's a slight pause before the lasers bounce.
The Extra boss is called Himemushi and the final spellcard is called Mushihimesama, which is a neat reference.
Trouble spots are spell 3, 4, 8, 10 and 11.
Midboss:
- Spell 1: You can misdirect this which makes it pretty free. You can use the corner to set it up.
- Spell 2: Len'en spell. Fairly simple if you stay low on the screen and only focus on the lasers from the right.
- Spell 3: Big suns are random but the stars are static. Can be quite hard.
Boss:
- Spell 4: Weird spell. It's a tiny bit like Pristine Lunacy from Junko but also not really. You can kinda tell where the rebound safe spots are by going in the middle of two lanes. Very random. The next non can become a problem if you end this spell when the boss is low on the screen.
- Spell 5: You can nullify this by misdirecting it to the top or top corners. Pretty free. The bugged nonspell can make it hard to reach the top fast enough to misdirect it though.
- Spell 6: Reminds me of that one spell in Fantastic Danmaku Festival 2 Extra. Just misdirect the aimed stuff.
- Spell 7: Bullets start fast and get slower over time. Easiest if you start low and slowly go up the screen.
- Spell 8: Aimed 5-way jelly beans that explode into bullets on the walls they attach to. Very RNG and very messy. The first wave you can make easy if you misdirect it to the top. You need to be pretty fast to get to the top in time after the last nonspell. After that it's best to misdirect it to the right or left wall but with my card setup it ends in one wave lol.
- Spell 9: Len'en spell. Very easy with Reimu homing.
- Spell 10: Another Len'en spell. Big snakes that come from either the top, walls or bottom depending on where you are in relation to the boss. These snakes are pretty awful and can spawn near you or way ahead of you. I found it the easiest if you make most of the snakes come from the walls before going down. I mess this up massively in this run and should have died.
- Spell 11: Very weird spell. You need to misdirect these waves to the walls. Takes very long since you're almost never underneath the boss. Homing really helps here. The residual bullets from the waves are a real problem here. Anti-Marisa spell.
- Spell 12: Survival. The idea here is to use the aimed pink butterfly to delete bullets for you. Want to aim these at dense clusters of bullets. For the last wave you want to follow a butterfly in its trail to escape.
- Spell 13: Final. Really easy final spell. The final phase looks spooky but you can just dash up through waves in one swoop.
All the nonspells are pretty simple but fun to dodge. The last nonspell is a bit spooky though.

“Stage is a bit buggy though” oh you!
So for anyone wondering how the player is able to enter the mine again despite the lack of oxygen, the game straight up says "Don't worry. After you beat Chimata, you somehow obtained a card that allowed you to breathe without oxygen!" I shit you not.
Doesn't the stage 4 boss give it to you? Or is it just, "wow she really left this lying around, huh".
Nope Stage 4 Boss didnt give it to her yet, she just made her exit the mine and go up the mountain.
I think it’s the 4th stage boss giving the protags the card right before entering the cave.
@@AmanomiyaJun they entered it before they even met her
@@frdla4124 ...before stage 4 itself. I was referring to the second time in the extra stage
The stage theme is so good
Really good, I love it.
This has to be my most favorite in a while
@@foxxbaker
No More Going Through Doors and The Shining Law of the Strong Eating the Weak are both absolute bangers lol
If there's one thing ZUN has been killing it with lately, it's extra stage themes. They're filled to the brim with energy. This one is no exception
@@WishMakers Those ones are good, but I prefer Last Remote and A World Of Never-before-seen Nightmares. Hourai Victim is a favorite of mine as well.
even better than the boss's song, the only bgm that is good in this game for me
Honestly my favorite thing about this boss is the way the bullet lines in her nonspells look like centipedes
I noticed it and I hate it xdddddd.
Perldrop said they look like subway sandwiches, and that's even more cursed.
@@Sodamoth and they get dissected throughout the battle.
@@marinaaguas9219 oof i feel bad, i also sucked at it but heres a very good hack that works on every boss
-get remilia fang card
-you know how when the boss finishes their spell before the last one that stand still for a breif moment then they begin the last spell?
Quickly use the remilia card in that small time when they are doing nothing, and you will entirely make the boss disappear and skip the final spell, very useful!
@@yas_g and that's how i beat this extra stage
i believe i used the fang card; the wolf card, and the laser card
Fun fact: the last spell card is called "Mushihime-sama's Resplendent and Restless Daily Life" which is a reference to the game Mushuhimesama by Cave.
pretty sure her surname is also a reference to that, albeit less directly.
Not just that, the final pattern of the last spell card looks like something out of Mushihimesama. Though in that game it'd be going much faster and for longer.
the final phase slowing down and looking absolutely insane density wise also feels like a Cave reference in general
@Donhimesama Daifutari I was referring to visually instead of difficulty, I know the franchises are on different playing fields when it comes to that. I'm pretty certain there's a final attack from a CAVE game that looks like 11:10 but with faster purple bullets, but I can't remember which.
E: I know Mushihimesama is in the name of the spellcard, but I'm checking videos right now and that doesn't seem to have the attack I'm thinking of.
Man, ZUN has definitely become better at illustrating artworks. The boss had pretty clear proportions and even a pose. Hadn't seen much of the game in years, so I can only compare it to the beginnings. Pretty impressive.
Yeah, Marisa, Reimu, Sakuya etc all look very cute and well proportioned too. Just in the past few years he has really improved greatly
I think he actually got a drawing pad which is why he improved so much, given he's actually pretty good with hand drawn stuff iirc
@@darkness74185 without a doubt, he's better with traditional art. That would make sense because around 10 Desires his style looked really "off" compared to usual. I also prefer his traditional coloring but these days it's looking good too
He went to art school
He's always been good at drawing in my opinion.
Whenever I look at her survival spell, the bullets look like a crawling bugs and that butterfly devours them to make your escape.
thats the idea. all her spells are themed around kodoku, an ancient japanese curse method where you lock lots of bugs up together and the one that ate all the rest and survived would be used for a powerful curse.
@@SweatyFujoshi I wouldn't say that all of her spells are based on kodoku, but her survival in particular is called "Kodoku Gourmet".
Imagine it's New Year's Eve 1997. Neither Gradius nor Thunder Force is what they once were, but just this past year both series have gotten games that arguably surpass anything their series has seen yet or will see. R-Type Delta has been announced, too, and from what's been revealed of it it's going to give that series the same treatment. Over on the vertical shooter front, captains of industry Toaplan and Compile are both moribund, but several Compile space shooter staff have been hard at work creating an all-new genre, manic shooters, under the banner of Raizing for four years and, also this year, several Toaplan staff have released a game that seems to be defining another new and even more iconic genre, bullet hell, known as DoDonpachi under the banner of CAVE. Meanwhile, Touhou only just got started this year, it hasn't yet reached its peak in any regard, and nobody who hasn't been to Japan since about 1995 even knows it exists yet. What if I tell you that, in 24 years, Gradius won't have seen a new full game since 2004, Thunder Force VI will be so bad it kills the series for good, R-Type will be finally getting a new game for the first time in 17 years but the reception will be chilly, no IP from either CAVE or Raizing will have gotten any all-new installment in nearly a decade, and Touhou will still be getting games people like reasonably well?
Battle Garegga looks fun, even if you have to take regular deaths both so the exceeds will count and to keep the bullet patterns reasonable.
this comment really hit me as soon as you mentioned thunder force IV :pensive:
Never underestimate the work of passion when up against corporate dollarware
@@fl00fydragon Well, now that Blue Devil in the Belvedere and Sapphire Panlogism are also out and of comparable quality, R-Type Final 2 looks even worse.
Don't forget: now CAVE is making a Touhou derivative game.
LOL for describing the Spell 11 as "anti-Marisa Spell". I attempted to clear the EX with Marisa and I almost always lost at least 3 lives at that spell. It is really ridiculous. Ended up selecting the mini Sun active solely for the purpose of getting through this (and it works!).
Imagine trying to clear this with Sakuya.
@@johnpapoutsakis6871 i died in that spellcard with sakuya and i have no idea how to do it
Wow, we had the exact same idea
@@johnpapoutsakis6871 It's pretty simple actually, just have to make sure you take a small turn in the direction opposite to the one you're in whenever you reach the borders for the knives to reach her, It takes a bit but it works. Having Reimu/Sanae's homing option cards and Saki's attack buff card also makes things simpler
I just noticed and I will tell as a fun fact: Himemushi Momoyo is second Extra Boss who is Barefooted. First one is Hecatia Lapizlasuli.
She doesn't have a fancy hat either what gives
@@TewbBelrog Oh I didn't notice that one.
@@TewbBelrog No, she has fancy hair instead.

So she does have a creepy vibe with her nonspells/spellcards
@@touchybanana1430 I don't think that's scary, compare it to a moon.
Probably my favorite ex stage since DDC's. Also the most fun I've had with a survival spell since Nightmare of Heiankyou
Fun fact: the plot started with her digging to find dragons to eat
Plot twist: She was looking for iron, water, flint, and lava to get to the Nether, so she could later go to the End to eat the Enderdragon
Plot twist: she dug for the underground to find hydra, so that she had an infinite snack of dragon heads!
EAT????
@@Ramsey276oneyou heard right

from a casual perspective this stage is mega fun due to the 3 different starting cards, allows for lots rapid-fire experimentation since it's just a single stage.
I will not be able to play a touhou game without Okina's door...
Thank you for doing these long write-ups! I really like being able to read your thoughts, and long-form shmup discussion is pretty dead
Fighting this boss with Marisa is pain.
Watching this gave me some useful tips, I was doing a couple spell cards pretty wrong as it turns out.
the mid boss star spellcard gave me clownpiece flashbacks
Minecraft Steve in Touhou
I'm starting to think that ZUN in his quarantined time played len'en at this point.
Considering some of those patterns and the whole other people's "card" buisness (I'm looking at you Haiji)
Yeah, also some of the flashbomb-like cards
Eeeeh I dont think so.
I thought that about HSiFS which had a few common plot points and the season release being like flashbombs, then WBaWC had Mayumi
Reimu is reaching unprecedented levels of smug
honestly I love this Extra stage. the best one since DDC imo 🥺
That golden pickaxe and Shovel woundnt last long
Too bad she didn't find any diamonds.
Not if it's Terraria. Too bad Terraria don't have any shovels though.
@@YataTheFifteenth it HAS a shovel. just not a golden one.
10:15 all I can think of here is the mspaint eraser tool
Something interesting I’d like to note- on the fourth and fifth nonspells, you could probably move towards the top-centermost portion before the walls collapse, then just tap downwards while they do so. That way, the walls do most of the movement for you.
I thought this game being Len'en 4 remastered was a meme
This is basicaly a...far more balanced Len'en 4 LOL.
BPoHC, but touhou
I don't know that much about Len'en, what's the joke?
@@raccoonchild the mechanics of UM and BPoHC are pretty similar. In UM, you buy and equip cards that gives the player abilities. In BPoHC, you earn alcohol by playing the game to upgrade your team and get special abilities. Both games can end up being broken with the right combinations of cards/upgrades.
@@Skywalker2016GD Huh. Interesting. It's too bad I'm too much of a scrub to get too far in any Len'en game. I don't think I tried that one though.
Combining Saki's and Momoyo's cards, holy shit, totally overpowered!
One thing to note is that the stars in the midboss 3rd spell are actually aimed at you, which is why that can be pretty difficult.
cheesed it for my 1st ever ex clear. ty phoenix feather and dragon pipe, couldn't have done it without you
New character design is so epic
@adeliene ortega yes
man, been a while i rage quited a game because of her and the stage in general lol. Good job as always, Now I Know How To Obliterate This Rock-Eating Bug™️
WOW, the Stage's music is a banger
You're a Super Player! Congralutations!
really cool video, but just wanna correct one thing in the description: spell 3 (tsukasa's final spell) - the big suns are static, and the stars are aimed. the suns fall from the same positions every time
Holy shit that damage, btw this stage is really fun to play, i enjoyed it a lot
8th spellcard is absolutely ridiculous. I cleared this on practice 1 time out of fucking 142 and basically by the purest luck. The massive amount of residual bullets are coming just randomly from all the 3 directions, under several different angles and freaking fast. On top of this you have this miner-centipede shooting aimed stuff at you. Literally insane for a casual player like me.
Nice going dude! Well played.
I beat my first extra with some help from you! Not a NMNBNA, but still!...
when I first did this extra, i failed at almost every single attack but somehow managed to capture her final spellcard
And so, as is often in Touhou, Momoyo comes to like and respect the protagonist for giving her a cool battle.
uploaded 8 seconds ago... here I am to upvote!
I really love this extra stage, definitely one of my favorites
Also the survival spell is so hard for me
glad im not the only one that thought the extra felt like a len'en stage at some points lol (referring to the description)
those len'en styled spells spark joy for me
all spell histories starts at 00/01...you NMNB the stage on the first playthrough omg
Replaced the scorefile with a new one before this run so yes but not really. There were plenty of attempts and practice before.
nice work.
To me this game was an instant classic.
The only problem is that the spells aren't as iconic as usual.
It has been like this for years. The last official games that have some good patterns are Touhou 14 (Seija and Raiko are really something)
Not that Touhou 18 is that bad though. I think the pattern design here is actually much better than Touhou 17, especially in the Extra Stage (Saki is just plain bad as an Extra Boss...)
@@TalosMistake I disagree. Touhou 15 had plenty unique spell cards (for better or for worse). And Touhou 16 didn't have many unique spells, but Yukina's final-boss final-spell was a great twist.
I think the issue is that the spells in recent Touhou games are designed around the gameplay gimmicks of their game. For example, Saki's flashy but basic spells give are a visual spectacle next to your trance.
@@TalosMistake Touhou 17 only really has Yachie and Megumi having memorable spell cards
I think the entire budget of the game outside story has gone to the EX Stage. Overall an excellent EX Stage and an excellent performance from your part.
Also, any plans to 2-ALL Progear no Arashi now that is on the Capcom Arcade Stadium on the 2000s era package or you're satisfied with your 1-ALL?
Haven't heard anything particularly good about that port, but I'm always up for a Progear 2-ALL at some point.
Missed oppotunity to say EXcellent
You make dragon eqter seem so easy 😭😭😭
Squinting real hard looking for a reference to the old arcade game.
Momoyo is an oomukade, a massive centipede that’s the natural predator of dragons. They have such bad indigestion that they can sterilize a mine, play Minecraft, and I think Momoyo was once killed by Mokou’s indirect descendant. Then somehow came back to life.
Aaaaaaand he's done!
new game has some amazing graphics!
Good news: chorus go smoothly with Touhou music.
Bad news: since it go so smoothly, ZUN'd go experiment sth new instead of apply old formula again.
Dig it, Dig out!
The furthest I’ve been able to get in my 3 attempts at this stage was the non-spell attack after momoyo’s 3rd spell card
Touhou is REALLY gaining attention, isn't it?
Pretty sure the giant snakes on Snake Eater are aimed at you somewhat.
Also I had that dumb nonspell moment as a result of her being so low when it started. It's dumb.
Their movement depends on your position, but they aren't directly aimed. You can stay below the boss and dodge the snakes without much movement
すごい👍
one of the sound effect in this game sounds like getting a diamond in pvz
and his score is 9 time pewdiepie sub count.

JUST 5 MIN OF EXTRA BOSS WTF MAKE TOUHOU GREAT AGAIN
how's this go without the yuge damage from centipede?
Are there any characters/active ability cards you highly reccomend for a first clear? I've gotten as far as the boss's first spell before losing all my lives
The UFO
I've seen Yukina's Door, Koishi's Hat, and Utsuho's Sun getting recommended. For characters you want someone with reliable homing.
Personally, I would recommend Byakuren's Scroll if you have trouble with the stage, because it makes your bombs last much longer. If you don't heavily rely on other cards, I would also suggest Mamizo's Statue because it flat out gives you another life. These are the most "noob friendly" cards I find, because the give you more value for your resources.
Yukina's Door gives you a nifty escape route for some of her spell cards. Koishi's Hat means you can touch enemies without hurting yourself. And Utsuho's Sun is broken because it lets you cheat through an entire spell card with no risk, and the fight is so long the you can get it off twice.
Lastly, you're given a random selection of cards to buy before the boss. If the Phoenix Feather is available BUY IT!!! It gives you 3 more lives, which makes the fight much more comfortable.
@@dungeonmaster3464 It's a Jizo statue not Mamizou statue
@@quochaonguyen6484 I didn't say Mamizou statue, I said Mamizou*'s* statue. All of the ability cards are based on a character's power, and I thought the Jizo was Mamizou's.
Or is it based on the statue girl from Touhou 16?
@@dungeonmaster3464 maybe it is since Mamizou's ability card is the Reliable Tanuki
When I hear the stage theme all I hear is the Liz triangle song
Finally, a minecraft 2hu
I really love the final boss and extra boss designs - the extra boss' ruffled hairstyle and dual-wielding tool look and the final bosses almost rainbow superhero look.
Though jokingly, in my head I thought:
"ZUN really went and made Gay Pride Superhero Icon and Minecraft as the Final and Extra Bosses huh."
Nobody:
Momoyo Himemushi spell card: MINE-BLAST
ZUN must be think how her design is similar to minecraft guy and try to add that pun
I wonder if it's possible to get points overflow. Maybe you can buy card that gives extra points for something? Or not buy heart to have more points from each following item (~80*400*10000=320 000 000, if I am right with bonus for items)
Wow, that Was fast
dude can probably walk in the rain and dont get wet
fun!
I found it funny how you can cheese the 2nd spellcard.
Even tho I'm a hecc and saki simp.
This extra stage is very fun!
For us gamers who aren't skilled enough for no miss and no bombs, what would be a good replacement for the centipede? I usually use an active card or Reimu's homing familiar for extra damage with range
I'd recommend Sannyo's card if you're confident enough to capture at least some spell cards. Every three you capture gets you an extra life, out of 12 spell cards where it would matter.
@@nintendonut888 thanks, I already tried it and it helped me beat Ex stage with Marisa (good lord I needed those lives) besides that, what would be other options for cards (preferably not actives)
@@akenohononiku916 You can't go wrong with the wolf card for additional firepower, or the Koishi or Mamizou cards to help preserve your power when you die. If you want to account for Reimu's lack of range, the doll is always a good choice. I wouldn't recommend it for one of your starting slots, but if nothing better shows up during the card shop before Momoyo, Okina's card is very useful in spell cards where it's applicable - particularly the survival card.
@@nintendonut888 I see, thanks
I also asked because apparently the centipede ability card desyncs replays? I haven't confirmed it yet
Utsuho’s sun is very useful too because it can clear a spell, nonspell, and a small part of another spell if you time it right. However you will only be able to use it 1-2 times depending on where it’s used.
Homeboy did it.
I see you use the Hakkero and not Alice's doll. Is the Hakkero stronger? I always thought the doll was the strongest attacking aid you could get because it attacks consistently.
Okay, the description has a few labels that say "Len-en" spell, but what does that actually mean? I'm not really in on the community terminology if it isn't self-evident.

Momoyo looks like Ava Max with a pickaxe and shovel.
Just curious why did you go for the heart instead of mokou?
Because he was flexing. He was never going to get hit, so why did he need more lives? The idea with to beat the stage with only the cards he selected at the start.
Why the boss reminds me to touhou 10 all the time?...and a bit of 13 in the last spell

8:25 this spell's name is Snake Eater. The reference is too clear
kinda curious, what do you mean exactly with Len'en spell?
Len'en is another series of games made by JinX. He was inspired by Zun, so he made his own version of the formula.
The spell cards in Len'en are really hectic, but pretty short. A lot of the spell cards throw something really big at you and you need to do something dynamic to avoid it.
If the spells of Touhou are like a dance, the spells of Len'en are like a magic trick.
8:25 Windows Ribbons Screensaver

I think she's the easiest extra boss ever, although she's one of the great youkai in gensoukyou
Saki's easier imo, literally GIVES you every phase the spirits you can use to cheese her next spell card
I think Momoyo is harder because of the curvy lasers and her obsession in aiming things at you
I'm surprised every 2 comments isn't a reference to Minecraft.
the music is so funny
Just asking, what’s the disadvantage and advantages of eatch character?
@@joebidenVEVO That would be the case if it was the demo, but things are very different now.
Reimu is likely the strongest shot for survival with a very useful homing shot unfocused and a strong focused needle shot. Sanae still performs exceptionally well on stages, but she really lacks in damage, which can end up causing many speedkills on bosses to fail.
Sakuya may be weird to use, but her damage when all her knives are focused is the highest in the game, and her damage when her shots are spread isn't even that bad in the full game. Her bomb also got massively buffed to actually do a good amount of damage, and you get to shoot during it.
Unfortunately this game doesn't like Marisa. Reimu's needles now outdamage Marisa missiles, and her lack of range really hurts her on many parts of the game. Sakuya may need to put in more work to hit targets not in front of her, but she's more than capable of doing so, while Marisa just suffers...
@@joebidenVEVO Funnily enough Reimu's focus actually deal the most or second most damage (depends on how you use Sakuya, but the difference is very minor though), while Marisa deals the least amount of damage (actually it is Sanae, but at least Sanae has good bomb and range)
@@joebidenVEVO A lot of the recent Touhou games hate Marisa, yet people still play her.
