Day 17 - Artificer
I've made an animatic for this in Febuary and decided two weeks ago to finish it for Artificer day - Was a mistake, I've done nothing but drawing the last two weeks, but it's done!

I have watched this 62 times. I have a mindset where if I find something good and I know its good, I will return many times. I have used 2 packs of Sticky notes making tallies on videos that I have this reaction with.
I love how everyone in the rain world community is all goofing around being silly, then the moment arti is mentioned, everyone goes all serious mode

@@sirith9157 Is genocide of the scavenger species justified? No, not really. But she's a grieving mother, and scavengers are greedy bastards who killed a child over a single pearl. I'd say her anger is completely justified, and it's understandable why she'd want to kill the scavengers afterwards. Not saying it's justified, just understandable.

Although I was slightly put off by the style of the slugcats at first, I quickly came to really like it. I noticed how the beginning shows the pup bringing Artificer a pearl, and then Artificer embraces them, taking joy in their child's kindness. Which would explain why the pup, after seeing the pearls again at the scavenger toll, went to collect one. It wasn't just simple curiosity, it was to make their mother happy. Then the mirroring transitions, they are seriously so good! The detailing, the facial expressions, the accuracy to what is seen in game. This is underrated, much, much too underrated. I applaud you, this is my favorite Artificer animation.
Noticed this after I watched it again, is 0:35 Artificer visiting an echo? Those orange particles remind me of the echo particles... Also that scene does take place on top of the wall.

For the style, I was aiming to represent them more closely as they are in game - animals with not very humanized facial expression. I had some struggle at the start to really nail down how much cat, slug or weasel/rodent they trully are! Funny little things.
In retrospect I would not have lined the eyes the way I did (with the black hashes) as it does look akward with the white color of artificer's eyes, but it is what it is~ I am still very happy with the look of it all :)
You right there got the scene right! It is a complete headcanon of mine that I've put in with the more canonical scenes - it gives a little bit more explanation why the blue pup went out of it's way to get the pink pearl later, even if it isnt canon, I honestly assume that was not the first time they collected shiny things.
About 0:35 's scene: Death of the author, I like your theory on it :)
My original intent was a sync with the song. "The Ashes fall slowly as your voice consoles me", I went with the feelings of it. Artificer after a battle, no more noises, only the calm silence of a battle won. It transitions to light as the scene changes to the past with the pups - perhaps she is remembering this past? The voice that consoles Artificer could be violence, or silence, or even her pups.
It is quite interessting to interpret the ambers as echo particles, and the fade in to light as a rollback to the past (what the echoes basically do to you in-game). I think both works! And maybe I was inspired by the echos serenity while doing the scene :)
The scene takess place on Metropolis actually, although the scenery is basically the same. The only context that proves it is that the previous shot (Arty leaving a shelter) is the first shelter you meet in metropolis. Right outside this shelter there is this trench-warfare area that I've spend a lot of cycles attacking scavengers in, and in general it looks like the Wall's top despite being inside the city.
Maybe she visited the Echo on Atop The Tallest Tower~
@@wolfycatt I kind of forgot how similar those parts looked, I'm just so used to going through the Wall that I immediately thought of it instead of the Metropolis section. That beginning scene really makes it a whole lot more powerful emotionally. Good intentions that result in astronomical consequences...
I love the symbolism of "they lost all of their karma the second they realized it was the scavengers faults"

This shows how vengful artificer is and how battle torn it really is, going from pristene red slugcat coat to a darker more worn and torn pelt with many scars
This was fantastic. The montage with the karma decreasing and Pebbles giving Artificer her final task was a wonderful capstone to the tragic anger of her story.
The escape into memories and dreams, the longing for days gone, the pain and wrath. You did a phenomenal work capturing and enhancing all these things and more from Artificers campaign. My only criticism/complaint would be the sorrow filling my heart currently.
That shot with that symbol in her eye (the symbol of violence). Just... solid gold.

I had tears in my eyes thorough the video. The tragedy, sorrow of the loss and neverending cycle of violence without the ability to come back to normal. That's what I felt in Artificer's campaign - mixed up feelings of sorrow and anger. It's all here at once.
Adding Five Pebbles who gives a task for Artificer that leads him to the bloodthirsty ending is a very, very precise touch in the end. They both have something... unfortunate in them.
That's what I needed.

I feel like Pebbles and Arti reflect and oppose eachother.
Arti is tied to her cycles by violence, whilst Pebbles' only goal is to cut the strings to his own existence, but they can both resonate.
I love how the top part of the symbol on the cheiftain mask goes from freind/attachment while the scav wears it to violence when Arti puts it on.

Nice detail with the Scavenger Chief's Rain Deer skull. In the moment where Artificer kills them the marking on the forehead is higher than Artificers (It's still the 3rd tier, so the Chief is bad too, but didn't commit *as much* genocide), but when Artificer puts it on it's the lowest type, showing that Artificer is a villain for all the genocide she committed. Still think the Chief got what he deserved though.

i really do like the storyline of the whole thing. i also imagine the second pup fell off the cliff into a river and drowned, which is why arti is afraid of water.

I have a slight thought that mapleshade (from warrior cats) and artificer could possibly connect with each other, seeming as they both lost their children, and were blinded by rage to get revenge for ones they heald dear be lost from them.

Just now getting into Rainworld and this is a very unique way of drawing Slugcats, but I love it! The art is so beautiful and the scenes each look like a painting that you'd want as a background to your PC or to hang up haha. I am only sad I am a little late to all the RW hype!

@@wolfycatt Honestly i think most of them has fur that sticks to their skin, making it very hard to see the fur. The reason i think it sticks is because they have SLUG in their name, and the liquid/whatever that thing is that slugs have is kinda sticky.
@@mishagaming1075 Answered something similar on another comment! Personally I think they have very short, otter-like fur - smooth, following the flow of the body and oily. But I prefer to draw them with fur, it simply looks better in my style :) And I was not aiming for complete accuracy with the game; More so wanted to re-tell the story of Artificer' dreams in a easier format to follow!

Possible spoilers ahead,
I just wished there were a more happy ending for Artificer. One I thought of is that instead of exacting revenge, and killing the chieftain, she turns around instead. This could then be the key to get to the highest karma level, as this would imply that she's forgiven them allowing you to actually break free of these forsaken cycles of reincarnation and suffering and ascend properly. Maybe I'm humanizing them too much, but they are obviously highly intelligent creatures and thus it wouldn't be too far fetched for them to be capable of things like forgiveness. Especially considering how other characters are capable of ascending beyond this world. This would be the most preferable (and not too far fetched) alternate ending instead of either meeting your pups once more during a failing ascension before disappearing into oblivion or getting locked into those damned reincarnation cycles. The latter wouldn't be much of an issue for a not self-conscious animal. However, as I already mentioned they are incredibly intelligent, and seem to approach human-level self-consciousness. Artificer is my favorite character so far, but just hurts playing so much.
Edit: I thought I've seen a mod that gives Artificer an ending not too dissimilar from what I'd just described. Though I want to finish the unmodded game first before doing anything like that.
Ngl watching this makes me genuinely sad to have only discovered this game and it's community well after the rain world art month
Like, the prompts would have been an amazing excuse to advance my very limited skills with digital art. I mean, i could still do that but it doesn't feel as much of a community based project as it would have. That was a lot of words that had very little do with this video, i'll fix that.
I have a lot that I like about this video, but I'll explain my reasons for liking aspects of the video more or less in depth. I really like the way that you animated the video which, alongside the music, helps provide a feeling of what i can only describe right now in my sleep deprived state as "whimsical melancholy" (unsure if that makes sense) and makes the viewer sympathise with Artificer and understand her rage toward the scavengers.

It’s amazing to see all this stuff popping up on my recommended now. After Downpour’s release I’ve been seeing more and more of these. I’m not sure if it’s because they didn’t exist or if the game wasn’t popular enough to get attention from the algorithm, but regardless of the reason it is very cool to see this kind of talent in our community! Amazing job!

Artificer backstory is just sad, having two of their own slug pups. One killed right in front of them by a spear impaling their stomach, the other by a scavenger throwing a grenade, which kills the slug pup
The second one was actually exploded by a scavenger grenade, not her own. Also further, the pup didn't die from the explosion, but was drowned by leeches.
