Really enjoyed this vlog. I think a couple of the reasons why I enjoy your channel is because of the interesting scenery. Like I mentioned before, this is the England I would like to see, the small towns with their cottage style homes and warm friendly pubs, it's how I envision all of the UK to be. Second reason why is because of the nice people you have introduced us to. Down to Earth, friendly folks who take pride in their town, pub and narrowboat channel. Reminds me of my friends parents, she Irish, he English, good salt of the Earth friends.

Great video. I loved the beginning shot through the planks on the bridge, I assume! I hardly think a lazy git could survive this lifestyle but showing this in almost real time gives viewers a feel of the effort involved in life on a narrowboat. I loved the work involved in narrowboating and find living in a house effortless and lazy by contrast. Sadly my husband hated the effort involved. It’s interesting that I loved it on our boat but hate housework and the other mundane tasks associated with living in a house. Thanks as always for sharing your adventure.

The real time quality of that video was a real treat. After watching vlog after vlog with speeded up sections ( typically lock movements) the actual timescale of canal cruising gets lost. I was happy to subscribe on the strength of the insight into the day in, day out details of your cruising lifestyle. Many thanks and well done.

That was a fun video,. I was thinking about you today, I went walking on an old disused rail line that used to be a canal and while looking off the side of the trail I spotted the remnants of a winding hole in Southington Connecticut. I had to wonder how many people walked that section of trail and looked at that bit of water and thought it was strange that there was pond connected to the river with a wall to keep the pond in and didn't immediately think this might have been a winding hole let alone known what a winding hole is.

Kings Lock for pub of the week... and opposite used to be Malts chippy.. that would most probably be chippy of the week.... even tho its been renamed for many years...The locals still refer to it as Malt's Chippy today.

Yup, brings back memories of doing the Four Counties Ring a couple of years ago. We were coming up from Stone and joined the very tail end of a traffic jam at Kings Basin. Apparently a boat had sunk in Wardle lock and pretty much jammed the T&M and the Middlewich Branch, the day before. We only had to wait for about six boats, so we had crew on the bridge side to mark our place, then warped the boat over to Kings and used the water point!
I've never driven a narrowboat single handed and I keep trying to visualise how I would do it, if I had to. I'm not sure about those lock ladders at the best of times and now I'm seventy-three, I would have to think of an alternative. I think stopping or slowing right down as the boat enters the lock, stepping off with the centre line and pulling it in mandraulically would be my plan.
I love to see you guys when you meet up with other vloggers and it looks like there's a time warp between Mark and Fran and you? They were in Leamington Spa only a few hours ago! Thanks for an interesting vlog of your massive, Wardle Canal undertaking.

Yes, the only place where you can sail from one canal, along the full length of another and onto a third, and your tea is still hot. Nice to see you are back in the north west, where canals all began (in the UK anyway) - lets have some more vlogs soon. I was forced to 'moor' on the Wardle when, after preparing the lock and returning with my boat from around that sharp bend, I found someone had closed the gates and started filling it, effectively 'stealing' the lock from me! Had to climb up on that high bank to hold the boat out of their way while they exited. They did apologize (maybe they were Canadian too?).

Nice bit of canal and a tight turn, I saw what you did there. Try a bit of reverse when you come out of a lock to stop the boat and you don't have to tie it while you shut the gate. Takes a bit of practice but you soon get the hang of it especially on a long flight where it can save you lots of time. And it looks good if your being watched.... 😎

Robbie Cumming All we’ve got to do now is find out where you are at the moment, and we may have a clue about where you’ll be on the telly!😄

Graham Westgate Yeah or you could watch carefully in a few of my videos as I do drop hints (or even detail the proposed route in one of them)!

So when do you get around to pumping out the welldeck?

  • @millomweb

2:35 - a whole 3 secs of engine running - but at least yours (unlike CHG) is running on both cylinders.
I suspect the tickover is faster than it need be. I'm thinking half that speed BUT do ensure it's still fast enough for the alternator to provide a good charge voltage.

At what point does a Short Canal just get called a Lock Pound?

    Hi Robbie
Just a layman thinking aloud, but would it be worth attaching a strap to the windlass so you can hang it around your neck and leave both hands free when climbing the lock ladders?

That’s sounds experimental! Which I like! If I get bored of tucking it in my belt (which is what I normally do) I’ll give that a go!

Robbie, that was a nifty bit of editing there. I've never seen the "Ghostly effect" before, is that in iMovie??

I think it’s possible... if you try a long static shot and stretch the transition length somehow you can achieve the same effect

Nicholson's 1:550 000 rates the Wardle as not worth mentioning. The Middlewich just bangs into the T & M.

Crap isn’t it. Such an interesting part of the canal network. They do mention it on p.218 of waterways guide 5 (or p.160 of WG6): ‘the first hundred yards or so of this branch is the Wardle Canal’ 100yds = 300 feet making it twice as long as it is!!

So why is the water on one side of the lock called a different canal then the water on the other side of the lock?

    • @RobbieCumming
      @RobbieCumming  4 года назад +1

Because they both go in different directions and were owned by two different canal companies. The lock and extra canal were apparently introduced to charge for passage between
