I've done a few counterpart freeplays, and what you say about bad starts is true, I've noticed that a good start and spawn with good food near the nest is key for growing as counterpart freeplay.

Been playing as counterpart in freeplay as well. I find it difficult to fight my own colony especially if I'm not able to get lots of food early on. But those army ant majors look so darn cool (especially if the majors turn glowing red (rage mode?)) so I can't help it. I wish there's an option in freeplay to use all the ants (just like on tug of war) or even just the army ant majors and the trapjaws. Better yet add them permanently on the story mode (one can dream)!

It is a rage mode as it depends how many majors that are near it at the time

Here is a tip clear your nest of enemy so it would be easier to build proper chambers

Also it’s bad to upgrade the major army ants as it gives them only a small buff to their damage

I am a dad! Thanks for asking, wee baby AJ is doing pretty well. She's nearly one now, almost walking, almost talking, sleeps like a trooper but is starting to get into a bit off a tantrum phase, can't win them all I suppose and we always knew it was coming one day!
