A bit rushed at the end as I had a potential buyer walking towards me! :) Must have thought it a little strange me talking to an engine. "Good little engine..."
Also check tracking, if the car has been taken over bumps too roughly or spanked into a kerb or two, alignment is prone to being knocked out of alignment. Also also check if it has done more than 80k that the cam belt has been changed.
many puma are now being stripped for there engine for the mk4/5 1996-2002 fiesta as are a straight swap currently building a puma powered fiesta they are fast and some of the pumas have a ecu labled as a tape ecu which can be mapped with the racing puma map and there very fun even when cammed
yep the 1999 pumas are definatly tape ecu i have one and so do some of my freinds get the 1.7 with tape ecu and the earlier cars are also better as they only have 1 lamba sensor before the cat so you can put a 4-2-1 manifold on with no engine warning light as the later pumas had 2 lambas 1 pre cat and other after cat lol
Is it still a good car to drive in this day and age?? i'm living in the netherlands and we can buy this model for allmost nothing and i would like to buy it as my first car :)
+Creatine Lifter Well if you can buy one for next to nothing then you have next to nothing to loose by giving one a go! ;) Go for the 1.7 engine model like the one in the video. LOTS OF FUN! Let us know if you get one.
@@SuperbClassics i ended up buying a Volkswagen Golf MK IV with a 1.8T engine. It was a cool and quite fast car. Main reason: my dad knows how to fix all the VAG cars because of work experience as an mechanic.
I've got the 1.7, but it's a model called 'Thunder' - it's got all the toys,Aircon etc., but also leather seats. I think it's the one to go for if you can find one? Sadly it's rusting pretty well in rainy Glasgow..
25/2 22. A later built model indicated by the HL Brake Light & Reg' No. Run out models had 1.6 engines. What were these like? Easier insurance? Where else is all this rust spoken about? Head lamps tend to fog with age? Anyone know what the 6 disc CD player option spec was please? Also, what are the best tyres to fit at replacement time?
The gear knob should be aluminium not stainless steel. Also tyre wear isn't great on the Puma due to the way it's setup (one of the reasons it handles so well). This Puma looks a bit rough IMO.
Im almost getting my drivers license and I want to bug one as soon as I can! Its such a lovely car and has a decently powerful engine, given the fact it doesnt weight much. I just need to find a body kit, wheels and suspension which I am already looking at and then I get my dream cheap car ❤
There is one in the states sitting in a garage in texas I think and its the black model with leather air con etc watch the lucky black cat on RUclips you will see the guy who imported it to use for driving around tge states but left it there as to expensive to bring home
@@oscarwilde5473 How much do clean Puma's sell for in the UK? Here in the US, because of covid, even older used cars are selling for CRAZY high prices.
I am getting one of these for christmas as I am learning to drive and I am looking to go to collage so yeah :) Lovely little cars these are and its nice to have a old reg too :) I like something that is cute and sporty :)
Agreed, and - not one to generalise but - if you're young the temptation to drive it 'enthusiastically' will be there so you are going to a) crash and b) get knicked ;-)
What was it with Ford and rust? All cars in the 70s rusted badly. By the 90s rust was no longer a major issue, except to some Fords. I had two rusty Fiestas at this time and a 93 example rusted everywhere within 6 years. It is a bit of a shame because they were great little cars.
Yeah, could not agree more. The Fiestas and Pumas of this era were terrible for rusting. It's a real shame as I have seen a real decline in the number of Pumas on the road these days :(
I agree, Ford were lax on rust prevention during the 1990's. great shame as they made some of their best cars then - I would include the Puma in this. Like the KA mk1, Puma is based around Fiesta mk4 underpinnings, all three of these cars are great little motors to drive, but all three suffer from rust. These cars come from an era where cars benefited from fuel injection and ecu engine management, but before manufacturers went full on crazy about putting too much electronics into a car - it feels like manufacturers need to compete on how many stupid useless bits of tech they can put in a car these days.
I understand that the 1.7L version is a great car, but is the 1.4L Puma with 90 BHP any good? And how does it go in comparison with its 'older' brother?
For general driving, the 1.4 is a fine little car and no slouch. Definitely consider it, particularly if insurance cost is an issue for you. The 1.7 gets the main attention because it was such a good engine. Ford and Yamaha definitely hit bullseye with that engine.
I Gotta say, I love your Videos. I'm a big fan! I make compilation videos where I take clips from other videos add some information, do my own voiceover and then play music over them. I was just wondering if I could have your permission to use 20 seconds max of this video. Obviously, the link will be in the description and all credit will be rewarded to you. If you are not sure, check out my channel and read the description of my recent videos an see what I mean
Actually it went out of production in 2002, it was never intended to be a long production model, still plenty on the roads though ...including my one ;-)
Ford issued a little book to buyers towards the end of production describing the Puma story. Puma was originally conceived by designers in their own time. The late Richard Parry-Jones' was involved too - he was'nt keen on spoilers & side skirts for this project. Jac Nasser was head of Ford at the time. You could buy Ford model 'dinkys' & Ford branded cycles during his tenure too. Ford also owned Aston Martin, Jaguar, & Volvo around this time. Later JN was replaced. It was all about the bottom line.
My advice to potential buyer's is do. A gov ,UK mot history check ....for underside body rot boxes just walk away worst car ford ever produced especially seat belt mounting areas they are just rot boxes all day long never owned one wouldn't want one ..... absolutely the worst all the puma is a rebodied ford ka laughimg out loud lol 😂😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 a big thumbs down for this rust bucket

The horse power is right there on top of the engine! 125PS! lol

What is the point, is it because people just like the fiesta more?

Also rear Iner sills and of course rear bushes cloudy headlights and rear lights Al in all most have now succumbed to tin rot

I'm going to buy 1.7 125km in Poland, I hope that's won't be a landmine :D
i co kupiłeś w końcu? jak wrażenia? sam zastanawiam się nad zakupem 1.7 ale ciężko je znaleźć

Never had the 1.4 Puma, just the 1.7's s they are so addictive :) Older brother to the Puma?? Fiesta Zetec S perhaps?
I mean, the 1.7L version is the older brother to the 1.4L one. Thanks for the video, by the way! Now I know what to look at while buying a used Puma)

They still don't seem to be greatly loved, other than the Racing model, which is considerably more costly.
I'm glad you never bought a Wange Wover
