- Growing & breeding red tilapia is fun and rewarding, by watching youtube videos, reading books, research & trials & errors i would say that i learned a lot & will still continue learning to improve more my backyard hobby.
I’m definitely feeling this..growing and harvesting my own food is truly a blessing from the MOST HIGH GOD..
Very sustainable, especially we are located in a remote island where foods need to travel 1000 miles….keep up to good work sir..

Now you need plants to take out nitrate so that no water changes are needed and you have an additional income stream
I know you're ranching them, but I would kinda love to have, 3 tilapias as happy little pets in a pond.
I live in a permaculture ecovillage and one of our community goals is to be fully self sustaining and we raise our own animals naturally free range and grow our own plants. But fish farming along with aquaponics has been a huge interest of mine recently and I'm betting the waste from these tilapia would make excellent fertilizer. I'm wondering if a setup like this could easily be converted into an aquaponics setup.
Hello Jason, i did aquaponics for 5 years but im not satisfied on the grow rate of my veggies, although it really helps to get rid of nitrate which beneficial for the fish. I found hydroponics more effective which yield more good harvest. i used fish waste as fertilizer for my traditional way of planting, i dumped fishpoop everyday to the soil and let it sit for a week which make soil rich. no need for me to buy fertilizer.
Very true. I've seen a system where a guy had a flush valve that ran over pumice rock that collected the fish waste. His plants were on the top and being fed directly from the fish automatically

Thank you! i found hydroponics more effective than aquaponics when it comes on harvest but aquaponics really helps to get rid of nitrate for the fish to hv quality water.

Thank you for the video. We have a poop tank, 2 biofilter tanks and an aeration tank. During month 5 & 6 of our 1st crop the water got very dirty with fine particles. Did you add the 4 poop filtration tanks to resolve that problem? Do you think one more with the sock might do it if the volume of the tank is 200 gal?
You wont hv problem with fine particles if you hv a mechanical filter (settling chamber) that works right, it must collect at least 95% of solid waste. May i ask where is your submersible pump located? is it in the pond or outside?
@@BackyardHobby outside. We have a 200 gal gravity settling tank with an inner core, it seemed to fail as the fish started going from .5 to 1 lb, finishing weight. Our first crop was 25% of tank capacity at 140. We are starting again at max 70. Adding plant tanks in the loop. Daily logging, watching everything. We were not so diligent the first 3 months.
The way i designed my gravity settling tank is it has to be deep so there would be calmness at the bottom deep for solid waste to rest. I also make sure the flow rate of my pump is just right not to stir the solid waste to avoid water contamination, i add another chamber to collect suspended solid and another chamber for filter sock to collect micro solid to make sure water entering my bio filter is jst filtering amonia. To have water plants is good to get rid of nitrate. Im a fan of crystal clear water and also to make sure the fish we consume are safe & clean.

300 red tilapia at 2 lbs each equivalent to 600lbs (266 kgs), actually i used to put 500 tilapia when i started but i noticed the growth is to slow due to so crowded, so 300 is jst right . Tnx for watching my video.
Yep. It only takes 9 months to make about 1000 dollars. Less feed and energy costs. Think about it.

How do you dispose the solid waste thats taken from the filter? Does it smelly like the waste of pig or chicken?
I harvested the solid waste by siphoning them into bucket, then dumped them into soil and let it sit for a week. i used that soil for my traditional way of planting and its really effective (free fertilizer), fish waste has no foul smell and doesnt create ecolai unlike the waste of chicken & pig.

The same water filtered cycle through the system, i only add 3 to 5 gallon water after doing cleaning maintenance to maintain water level because water escaped while i siphoning fishpoop frm mechanical chamber

Dont your fish jump out I lost a few jumping out of my crappy system.
Also do you also have problem with oil foam build up from the feed? Or how do you get rid of them. I just scoop it out but it is labor intensive.
Fish hardly jump out if you have good water quality on your pond, mechanical filter(settling chamber) does the job of collecting solids before oil foam buildup happened, adding a filter socks will help too.
When they jump out, he just eats them. Raw, probably.

@@jefreyvalencia4669 Fish get stress & scared easily if u hv poor water quality, usually they swim down once they got scared if u dont hv water problem like high in amonia. Seriously i hv thousands of fish but never experienced fish jump out after i improved my filtration.

Have you raised other tilapias besides red nile? I understand red nile is the fastest grower. I am looking to start and not sure if I should try the red or blue. Also have your tilapia began breeding if yes how many months before they breed and what set-up do you have so that the grown tilipais do not eat the fingerlings
Based on my experience, blue tilapia is the fastest to grow compared to others

How often do you change water and is ammonia ever a problem I want to start my own tilapia pond
I collect fishpoop in settling chamber once a day, while im doing that , 5 gallon of water escaped so i refill 5 gal frm tap water tp maintain water level, thats my water change. ammonia is not a problem because i was able to collect at least 95% of fishpoop and able to house abundant good bacteria in biofilter.

So far the only predator that giving me problem is birds, what i did i made a scarecrow to protect my fish, so far its working.

Minimum 4 times feeding each day? that's crazy high, have you heard Biofloc system? it could lower your feeding rate while maintaining the growth rate, worked so well in my setup for the last 2 nile tilapia harvest, maybe works for you too!
Thank you, will study & try biofloc, i heard a lot abt it, but i notice water looks so muddy like brownies green yellow color. Does it affect the taste of the fish?
I only do heavy feeding for 2 months until they reach good size then lessen the feeding to one times a day or 2 times
Could this be setup in a building or does it have to have the natural sunlight? I'd be worried about things getting into it.
Hi timothy, its more better to setup to the place that has morning sunlight for them to grow healthy as long as your pond has a good filtration.

@@ololadefalade4089 The 2 most important filtration is mechanical filter & biofilter. Mechanical filter is to separate solid waste (fishpoop) frm water, biofilter is to separate bad liquid (amonia) to good liquid. Therefore good filtration means good quality water for the fish

In my experience, tilapia grow in a clean water that has good effective filtration will taste like sea fish, tilapia grow in algae water will taste algae, mud water will taste like soil.

Hello, i dont do Water change but i collect fishpoop in mechanical (settling chamber) everyday, more or less 4 gallons of water escaped while collecting poop so i refill 4 gal of water to maintain water level. Beneficial bacteria in biofilter is the key to get rid amonia, if your pond has high amonia level it jst means your filter is not working right. May i ask, where is the location of your submersible pump?
@@BackyardHobby Thank you very much for your reply. I have 7 tanks in the system. The first is the fish tank. The second is the tank to filter the solid waste from the fish tank. The third contains granite stones. The fourth contains larva stones. The fifth contains bacteria house filter media. The sixth is the plant tank (but I haven't start planting anything yet). The seventh is just water collecting back from the plant tank and the submersible pump.

@@BackyardHobby Hi friend, since you don't do water change, as far as I understand, the nitrate level will increase. And when nitrate level is too high, it may cause toxic for the tilapias. I am not sure is my understanding correct or not. If that is the case, may I know, how do you get rid of excess nitrate?

Tank sizes is 1000 gallon, has stocking rate of 300 red tilapia (2.5 lbs each), actually stocking rate is depend on filtration, the bigger the filtration the more fish you can grow.

The bigger the punp the stronger the suction, make sure use uniform right size of pipe for good smooth flow rate

Base on my experience shower bath sponge loofahs scrub and japanese matt are the best biomedia, they can house & hold more good bacteria. MBBR ( moving bed bio reactor) using K1 is also very good but needs a lot of aeration to get good results, actually im on MBBR project but using water bottle cover instead of K1. I always want DIY on my hobby.

You dont need sucker fish, tilapia eat those algae, its their natural food

My water is green filled with algae and I never have to give any pellets and I give them duckweed and they grow just as fast I got ugly water but I got giant fish... And I don't have to have thousands of dollars worth of equipment that makes those fish pretty expensive a piece...🤪🤪🤪 Amortization of all that equipment is going to take you the rest of your life to pay😂

Amazingly clear water. To be honest, I'm about to give up. Been trying for about eight months to raise tipalia and have made so many mistakes. First, didn't have a clue about cycling. Still don't know what it means, but I guess my tanks finally got cycled. But my biggest problem is that no matter what, I can't keep the tanks clean. The pH is all over the place and let's not get me started on the nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia. I'm not sure what else to do at this point.
Started with a 55-gallon tank and 30 fingerlings. Not cycled. They all died. Waited a few weeks before purchasing more. Second attempt - 30 more fingerlings. They through in an extra 10 for my original loss. Before I know it, tank is yellow, then brown, unclear, smells, etc.... The take has a 4'Lx1.5'Hx6"D grow bed above it filled with clay balls. No plants at this time as the strawberries I originally planted all died. Grow lights above that. Water is pulled from the tank, filtered in a small bucket with polyester, then goes through the clay ball grow bed, and via bell syphon quickly releases back into the tank, also providing tank oxygen. Fish started to die, so I got more tanks (2, 30-gallon tanks). Spread the fish out. About 20 in the big tank and around 8-10 in each small tanks. Same doggoned problem. So - I bought a 270-gallon tote. Filled with 240-250 gallons of water. Built a DIY garbage can filtration system. Video here ruclips.net/video/N9zVLh2dGt0/видео.html. Not three days into moving the fish out there, where I had perfect 7.0 pH and perfect temp around 75F, I go out and all the fish are hiding on the bottom, not eating, water greenish brown. Tested water and ammonia was astonishingly zero, but nitrites and nitrates spiked through the roof. Two immediately died. These are fish raised now for five months or so and about 6-10 inches in length. So I was horrified they were now dying. Bought some 7-day system to stabilize the water and the fish are eating now. But still, I can't see through the water, even with the light.
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. At this point I'm practically starving the fish worried I may have been feeding them too much. I'm feeding them pellets from the tilapiadepot.com. All I have left is 16 fish. I was giving them a small handful of pellets but now I'm dropping in about two pellets per fish count. Still no change in water color.
Any ideas?
Also, I'm wanting to try and place some in a breeder tank, but how in the world do I move fish from one tank to another without them dying from shock? I've tried the same temp/pH but that didn't work. If I don't get a breeder tank, I'll end up having to buy more fish, and that moots the point TBH. I've already spent HUNDREDS.
Your original tanks are all much to small. You need to give the fish room. This tank is clearly much much larger than 55 gal. The spike in nitrates is because fish produce nitrogen. Their waste, just like any has lots of nitrogen. For example fertilizer contains nitrogen and you can't let it get to a water body or you will have a fish kill and an algae bloom
A correct filtration system is the key for success in fishkeeping, solid waste (fishpoop) is the main source of problem, its the main source of amonia & bad bacteria that will kill fish if not manage properly, a tank or pond need a strong mechanical filter chamber which job is to collect all heavy solid & suspended solid, it means water need to be free from solids before it flows to matured biofilter that house beneficial bacteria to get rid of amonia then fresh clean water back to the pond. thats the right cycle. One more important thing avoid putting the subsmersible pump into the pond (pump fed), bec submesible pump has an empeller, it mass wrecking the fishpoop and turn it into fine macky liquid, its like making a milkshake frm osterizer or blender which will give filtration a mission imposible and pollute the water badly. Instead of pumpfed better use gravity fed by taking advantage of bottom drain or SLO (solid lifting overflow), on this kind of method, mechanical filter will be able to collect solid waste as it is still solid because no mass wrecking happening. The only maintenance we need to do is to clean the mechanical chamber by siphoning solid waste then refill water that escape during cleaning to maintain water level. Hopefully this advice will help so that no more fish kill will happen.

You lost nothing. This is nothing more than a costly hobby. You can never earn any money raising fish in a tub in your yard.
@@foobarmaximus3506 You don't need to make money just save over time by not buying expensive fish and with inflation that cost just keeps going up and up. This man says they harvest fish weekly for his family and beyond the cost of the tank his filter system cost is really just the media in them as he is using cheap barrels and some pvc pipe and of course the food. It might take him 2-3 years to break even on the cost of the set up if they eat $20 a week in fish but each year after that you are just getting closer to coming out ahead.

@@greyimages3425 It depends, if your fish is crowded & has poor filtration system, your fish will not grow & will get sick., with the right stocking , good filtration & high protein diet, your fish will grow fast within 5 to 6 months with the weight of 2 lbs each

I just do not understand the economics of this since I can go to the grocery store and buy 4-5 Tilapia fillets (cleaned) for like $7.00 so what is the payback to all the money you are spending? Please explain to a starter like me?
Fresh live tilapia is uncomparable to fish fillets if you know how to make oriental dishes that used to serve in a restaurant like steem fish, sweet & sour , fish soup & many more. we called it red fish, restaurant used to display them in an aquarium for customers to pick on what kind of dish they want, it cost $40 plus one order, raising red fish in my backyard saves me a lot of money instead of going to restaurant. here in my place to buy live red fish is $10/lb while dead frozen one is $4.99/lb. freshness is expensive bec goodness comes with it.

Very good question. Also, please consider this. Almost 100% of tilapia you buy in the store is from Asia. I've loved living in and visiting Asian countries. But since tilapia if a very hardy fish, most Asian farms feed these fish feces. This is a practice that puts toxins in the fish meat which transfers to us. Very unhealthy.
