    This was actually SO HELPFUL!! I think most novice and even advanced car guys are scared of automatic transmissions. (Me and my ford included lol), you weren’t lying when you said this would be a perfect starting point. This explains so much, and honestly not how I thought the inside of my transmission would look!! In the future i’ll be looking into how I could possibly beef up my 8F35. Next step, figuring out exactly how my clutches work. This is all so cool

    I love the tape out on the gears and your spinning the gears to see how different tape moves. This visual really assisted me in finally comprehending automatic planetary transmission operation theory.

    honestly bro one of the best and most clear and concise videos i ever watched in relation to automatic transmissions
    ive been a car mechanic for 18 years and never totally understood the planets role inside the trans i had a basic idea but after wathing this video it all makes sense
    im also about to build my first 4l60e to suit my vz holden commodore 2005 ls1 engine and your videos have given me so much information there are alot of good trans rebuild videos out there but none actually explain clearly the roles that each part take its more like do this and fit that and it will work vs your information bigs up from australia cheers

    Hello! Nice detail on your build jobs! Just wondering? Is there anyway you can test run the trans, before installing into car? Thank you.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  3 года назад +1

      Great question. Large trans rebuilding outfits use a transmission dyno to "road test" em without the use of a truck/car. However, the typical transmission repair shop will not have that kind of equipment at their disposal.
      It's pretty disappointing to install a transmission, and it doesn't work as intended. Been there, done that...got the T-shirt.
      Want to increase the likelihood of a successful rebuild, without the use of a transmission dyno? There's a number of things that can be done on the rebuilding bench, to promote a successful rebuild. It's all in the "mundane" details. Proper air testing (air pressure, and vacuum testing) of select oil circuits is a must. All of the oil circuits are important (clutches, valve body, pump, etc). However, certain circuits are riddled with problems...that can be addressed. This topic is on my to-do list.

    Hi, i have few questions, how do i know my torque converter is bad, no body in youtube have this.. 2) if my line pressure is good across all gear, can i assume my valve body is good and condemnn mechanical problem.. if you can do diaganosis video, that will be super helpful

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Год назад

      A TC (torque converter) can be bad in a number of ways.
      With the exception of older models, TC's are equipped with a clutch, referred to as a TCC (torque converter clutch). They can start slipping and burn up (fail). Also, the PCM (computer) can detect an excess amount of slippage, and throw a code (on TC models that are supposed to slip...they use a different clutch material, that is supposed to slip some).
      TC's are equipped with a one-way clutch. They can fail a couple of different ways, resulting in different symptoms...just to name a few ways they can fail.
      We have a rebuilt torque converter that were gonna use to make several TC videos with...when time permits.
      Stay tuned.

    I have a 08 4l60e with input speed sensor. put in drive range just will move. put in low and burn tires manual shift up and goes 1-2-3. put in d loose forward movement go up 1-2-3 and let off gas and also loose forward. low clutch good forward sprag good, all clutchs good what would the problem would i have? IM lost

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  Год назад

      I'd be leaning towards a failed Input Sprag or a failed Forward Clutch.
      With the trans in D, it relies on both of those items to be working properly. If either one is not working, when you step on the gas, and it acts as if the trans is shifted into Neutral. A problem with either one (sprag/clutch) results in a physical disconnect between the engine power, and the planetary gear set. No power into the gear set equates to no power going to the wheels.
      With the trans shifted into 1, the sprag and the forward clutch are still used. Additionally, an extra clutch is used (Overrun Clutch). It's supposed to be used for engine-braking, and just extra clutch capacity (towing, etc). Even with a failed sprag, or Forward Clutch, the planetary gear set will still receive engine power, thanks to the Overrun Clutch. But, it won't be long before that clutch burns up....there's only 2 clutches in that clutch pack. That's not enough to live for very long.
      You can learn more by watching both of these videos.
      4L60E Power Flow (1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Gear): ruclips.net/video/IfOqbTqKubE/видео.html
      4L60E Power Flow - Manual 1st, Manual 2nd, & Manual 3rd: ruclips.net/video/6kfAuXJFYFE/видео.html
      I mention the Overrun Clutch in the 2nd video. However, I believe I mistakenly referred to it as a Coast Clutch.

    the various bits are held, or not, and the various bits are each the output at various times. what's missing for me is _how_ - in more detail than "with bands and clutch packs etc".. Any suggestions for videos I could watch?

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  2 года назад +1

      I'm excited that you want to learn more.
      I plan to go more in depth on each gear (for the 4L60E). It'll incorporate the planetary gearset parts used for that specific gear, the clutches/band used, as well as the hydraulics used to apply those particular clutches. I plan to make it super simple, and super easy to understand.
      For the mean time, I recommend these two (2) 4L60E videos:
      Power Flow (1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gear): ruclips.net/video/IfOqbTqKubE/видео.html
      Power Flow (Manual 1st, 2nd, & 3rd): ruclips.net/video/6kfAuXJFYFE/видео.html

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks  2 года назад

      With the vehicle shifted into Park, you then shift to D, and the vehicle will not move?
      Engine revs, but no forward movement?
      When you shift to Manual 1, the vehicle now accelerates normally?
      With that info, and that info alone, it narrows the potential causes down to two (2);
      1). Input Sprag.
      2). Forward Clutch.
      You mentioned unplugging the wiring harness from the trans.
      With the harness unplugged, and the trans shifted to D, will the vehicle accelerate normally?
      Or, do you still have to shift to Manual 1, in order to get vehicle movement?

      A powerflow video would be great! I still try to put together the pieces from several videos and animations, but I still miss some. I mean, I get the general Idea with the Simpson set and the gears being controlled by clutches, but I lack the decisive 10%. What exactly does it do in 2nd , where does the powerflow switch to reverse, etc.
      Here in Germany we don't grow up with automatics as You know. There is no such broad knowledge base like in the states.
      Therefore thanks again for Your idealistic work in producing this great videos.
