I really enjoy watching your adventures Xander! One thing I noticed that is a testament of being the good dude that you are, is whenever you cooked and served up the food you always gave your friend more than you gave yourself. It shows the kindness you have for others. Class act bro.
I’m glad to see you expanding into hunting, it’ll add a new dynamic to your videos! It’s challenging when your new and having an experienced friend will be very helpful.
I like your hunting videos a lot. It feels good to become a well rounded outdoorsman, fish/hunt, camp, hike/paddle. Acquiring your own food is special!
Great video. Alittle advice from 40 years of deer hunting. Get out to your spot before daylight and stay till after dark. Most deer movement happens at dawn and dusk. Also, bucks rub their antlers on trees to remove the felt. I start seeing rubs as early as late August in my area. As the rut comes in they continue to rub their scent on those same rubs. Scrape, all deer visit scrapes, bucks and does. Ive even seen a fawn hit a scrape. They use their feet and leave scent in them by peeing over the glands on their hind legs. Bucks visit them to find does in heat. Keep at it. Like I said, 40 years experience and I still have alot to learn.
People like myself who have 41 years experience let those with 40 years or less experience walk out in the dark and sit all day. We, on the other hand, get to our stands around 9am and shoot our deer around 11am to about noon most years. But have fun sitting in your stand all day, I'll be back at camp having a hot lunch and a nap dreaming about the next one. ;-)

That's what I was going to say. You're not going to get anything stomping around the woods when you should have become part of the woods like bigfoot, as you said,.. long before sun up or down. Hunting birds in the middle of the day doesn't help the game think there isn't something different going on in their habitat and therefore changing their habits,...either. They could have spent the first middle of the day looking for signs (like the the tree rubs), feeding places, trails,.. to pick a good still hunt spot,... probably a lot farther away from their campsite than a couple hundred meters/yards,.. then the remaining middle of the days spent quietly fishing,. just so they wouldn't starve,.. until they finally got a deer.
I cant just sit around in one spot ALL day. Id rather not hunt if that’s the case. Ive never seen Clay Hayes sit around all day, he spots and stalks with a trad bow, with good success.
Absolutely loved it, the fact that you show all, the good, the bad and the failures as well makes you soo much more easy to be connected to (for me personally). Much love and huge props to your fellow hunter also
Loved this adventure, Xander! It's so refreshing when folks go out and do things that are outside of their respective expertise and/or comfort zone, and aren't afraid to try new things. Tosh is so chill and relaxed in most situations, it belies his experience. Also, eating sticks of butter like an ice cream sandwich for funsies. But mostly the great feeling of trying new things!
Great video Xander. Worth mentioning about hunting that a deer taken by a rifle suffers a hell of a lot less than a deer stalked and eaten by a bear, or worse, a deer that dies of starvation.
Thanks for a great video. I haven’t been out hunting in four years since I moved from Illinois to Mississippi. Enjoyed every bit of this video fishing and hunting. I’m in heaven thank you.😊
I just watched yours and Tosh’s videos back to back. Always great to see the different perspectives. You guys picked some beautiful crown land to hunt! Too bad the weather didn’t cooperate but there will be plenty more chances in the future! Looking forward to seeing those too!
5:30 Acorns are definitely not toxic for humans. They used to be a staple for natives and Europeans and are still popular in places like South Korea even to this day. But the catch is that you have to process them before eating them because they're filled with tons of tannins, which is what gives them that horrible bitter taste.
Definitely more hunting content please. Just some advice for you Xander, get to the spot you pick out the evening before your morning hunt, about 45 mins before the sun comes up. Give it a little time for things to settle after walking through the woods. Deer are spooky, especially bucks

Great video as always Xander. I recently listened to your appearance on Baird Country talking about dabbling in hunting. As a hunter I'm always happy to see others get into the lifestyle and harvest fresh food. Well done, man.
The only time I don't like grouse is when they taste like cedar. I like this new view of you. I never saw you as a hunter. Killing an animal is an aquired ability born of need. If you harvest and eat your quarry it is harvesting, not killing. Deer is good eating, especially done in a slow cooker with veggies. Good video as always. Pax.
Let me give you some advice as you are new. Hunt .5 - 1.5 miles downwind from camp or faster. make doe calls if deer are in season. Used sticks mimic a buck rubbing if you find antlers used them. You're on the water, use it all animals come to the water. When people are new to hunting they tend to think they have to go deep into the woods you are in the woods. Beaver is not bad and will keep food in your belly while you are deer or moose hunting. I have a feeling you walked past more game then you knew. the water is a way to travel with no notice. to use the boats to get away from camp before hunting. This is just some advice.
Fyi, humans walk in a steady pace, animals meander. I always walk in the woods like I’m trying to be a squirrel. My Grandaddy grew up in Quebec and taught me that.
What a thrill to see two of my favorite people l follow. It was a hoot to see you learning hunting lessons together. So sorry to have it come to a close.😢 I do enjoy your videos separately as well! Thank you! Thank you!
It’s tough deer hunting with that rainy weather. Especially if it’s windy as they’ll be spooked and will bed down. Usually it’s best the day right before that weather moves in when the deer actively feeding. But more importantly is the time. Most mature bucks are nocturnal. It’s best to be set up before sunrise with the breeze towards you. Legal shooting times differ state to state. I’ve had my best results set up in areas with define game trails, especially transitional areas such as feeding areas into bedding areas, low ground to high ground. Also look for spots to set up where there are natural barriers where they deer are led into a funnel and forced to travel into your path without escape routes. Like us, deer usually prefer to take the path of least resistance. In most instances when faced with danger they’ll usually go back to the direction they came from because they know it was safe. So be patient and wait for the best shot. Good luck next time!
Great video , well done Xander , I like the different spin on things being a hunter myself , you and Tosh are great together, he is a good friend. 😊 Thanks for taking us along ..
I'm very happy, Xander. that I have just discovered your many, really talented nature videos. Here in Finland there are the fells of Lapland with their water bodies, in Norway the fjords and mountains, the Alps are also really wonderful. These have all become familiar. Despite all of the above, I am absolutely mesmerized by the Canadian scenery. Because of the long distances, I look forward to your descriptions. Good luck for future events.
As a hunter you probably know all already but if you hunting game in the woods with walking on dead leaves and talking, you will never get anything. You are whispering for us, but as you know well, wild game senses you and hear you on a long distance. Only way is to try move off the wind opposite of direction you expect game and as my old mentor said: be quiet, don't move, patience. Don't breathe! 😅😅😅 (ofc if you on a driven hunt that rule is absolete). But if it's a bad day.. it's a bad day. More luck other time. Deers are dumb when you hunt off the stand and feeder but if you hunt like this...oh my, dead leves and birds will blow your position in 99%. Anyway, awesome experience and good video. Keep posting, I like it.
I love camping videos and I love Meat Eater. I always wanted to see something that combined both aspects and you did that very well in this video. Hopefully there's more to come. Cheers
Awesome video Xander. Isn’t it wild to hold your first dead animal? Not just how warm, but how freakishly limp. First time totally shocked me. And to eat it….it’s hard to describe how it feels to eat something you’ve harvested, seen alive, and taken. It’s like joy, and this sort of respect for your food, too. I read sustenance hunters generally eat less meat, because they respect the work it took to get it. I was anti hunting when I was young, until I had a sort of epiphany. Animals in the wild die horrible deaths. Like really horrible. Compared to getting shot, there’s no comparison how much easier it is to go from a hunter. And as you said, if you eat any meat, you’re just having someone else kill an animal that probably lived a horrible life, then was killed for you anyway. And as you said too, bushwhacking, but with a purpose is so different. I just got back a couple weeks ago from 6 days, mostly alone, small gaming and camping. I’d go back tomorrow if I could. Hiked for hours each morning, came back for lunch, and went again in the afternoon. For the birds, there is so much more than just the breasts. I’m kinda sick of how people waste so much. If you get a few, the legs are awesome. Like little chicken wings. You’ll need a few bids though. And the carcass!! Simmer it in a pot of water, and you’ll have the best chicken soup stock ever! Acorns are totally edible btw. Native people used them by the ton. You need to soak them to get the bitter tannins out of them, dry them, then grind them up into a sort of coarse flour. Anyway, thanks for the video. Seems all those Ontario canoe guys are either too "sophisticated" to hunt, or are afraid the flower huggers would get mad. Never be ashamed of what you enjoy…..unless it’s kinda creepy. 😀
Always love the videos but this one was the best! So cool to see you out there learning how to hunt. Nothing like fresh grouse over the fire. Hope to see more hunting along with all the great trips you already do
When I'm out hunting it's just so cool h[w all of a sudden you see deer slowly walking through the woods just on the edge of sight and if they are laying down and think you can't see them they will lay there and let you walk on by
*_In the future I hope to see you use a FLIR Drone, and when you come out here on one of your hunting adventures.. at least get a big advantage by seeing if there are even any deer in your area!_* _Freaking awesome videos.. these have been much enjoyed!_
I really enjoyed this one, Xander. I'm at a similar stage: lots of fishing but brand new to hunting. So I appreciate your sincerity during the learning process. Can't wait to see you get fish and game on the same trip! More of this, please.
Good for you as you drift into filming hunting as well brother! I'm getting older and my range is shrinking but my son Xander, out here in the Kootenays are getting into it as well. Best wishes on your adventures, and keep on being you. D.
I subscribed awhile ago. I enjoy watching all of your adventures out in the woods. The scenery is beautiful. We don’t have anything as beautiful here where I live like where you live. Last night I watched one of your videos while I was working on a watercolor painting. 🙂🐰🎨
Add mushrooms to your repertoire, they're a great supplement at a minimum to your food options, and many of the easy ones grow everywhere. Granted, not many grow in the winter, but their are a few. In the woods you were in the birch trees will have two very valuable ones, birch polypore and chaga. The birch polypore is edible in addition to its many other uses and chaga is very valuable too. Overall great video, good to sew you guys getting out and having fun. Better luck next time!
Find a big thick patch of greenbriers for deer, trust me, especially big bucks. And sit right in the middle of em. I get a buck every year hunting in a big greenbrier patch. It's their favorite food and big bucks never have to leave that area when it starts getting cold out. Got two 14 points and a 10 point in the last 3 years in the same exact spot. The first 14 point that I got was a giant!! Got it with a bow and it scored 203¾ inches and won a free mount and a $1000 at our local archery store who was having a biggest buck competition. I sneak through our field and go about 50 yards into the woods, I have a perfect tree right in the greenbrier patch and see deer all day long. Dragging them out is a little bit of a pain for obvious reasons lol since it's all jagger bushes, but it's definitely worth it. Once i get them to the field I get the quad or the horse to get them back to the house
Cool video. It's always good to have a beginner mind and not be afraid to make mistakes. You guys seem to have good chemistry. I look forward to more of your hunting videos.
I really hope you do more hunting trips with minimal rations. I think this is my favorite video I've seen from your channel so far! Also as scope covers go, I am a huge fan of butler creek caps since they're captive to the ends of the scope and much easier to manage while still being cheap. Can't wait for your next video!
Never too late to start something, I started hunting at age 36. This year marks 23 years. I can count the number of deer on two hands, but I look forward to the hunt every year.
The deer rub you saw on the trees was actually moose teeth marks. I had the same thought when I first started out. They’re usually pretty high up. Could also be a porcupine too. You’ll know a deer rub when you see it!
Hey brother, one ❤, watching from 🇬🇧, watching you again with my maligators, tucked up by the log burner in our converted ex horse 🚚. You are living the dream ❤. I love watching your journeys, it's the best way to stay clean and sober, just out in nature, living in the moment like my maligators, they are what saved me , save me every day, taught me to live in the moment, taught me life and how to feel it again. Keep doing what you are doing 🙌 😊. Oh and jeez you remind me of a young Guy Peirce 😊. One ❤
I love it when you share rice to your friend...its like what we do here in the Philippines...❤💯 you're avid fan and subscriber from Tagaytay City Cavite Philippines...
Awesome Video Xander, really enjoying your stuff. I do want to let you know that what you thought was a scrape from a buck was actually a moose pealing the bark of the tree with its bottom teeth. A deer rub is only about 6inches to a foot off the ground and they will completely rub the bark off not just little bits.
Grouse was the first thing I ever hunted, was inspired by you and Clay Hayes and took my first ever animal with a recurve bow solo. Got the grouse out of a tree. Super fun seeing you get back into hunting again
Acorns are edible, but not in large quantities due to the tannins they have in them. You can soak them or boil them to remove the tannins. They can also be made into flower, or ground and pressed to extract the oil.
I you kidding me !! Yuck ! Potatoe water for coffee and butter in coffee! Eating butter, you must have been starving. Hmmmmm as you would say. Really enjoyed both of you camping out. The scat you were finding Bear, Moose, thank you for seeing beautiful country and sharing xx
I actually killed my first deer today on a solo public lands hunt in Texas. It was a surreal experience and a humane kill. It died within seconds. Super pumped to see your hunting videos! Excited for you to get your first deer.
Find a white oak tree with lots of acorns and get up wind of it and try to make a blind with brush or use a bush or anything to get behind and your chances will be pretty good because white oak acorns are the deers favorite
Brother I've been watching you since the beginning, the things your videos have got me through but man, more hunting context please. This was an amazing watch, thank you!

Fantastic video, being a life long hunter and woods wanderer, it truly is about the adventure. It is more challenging here in western Iowa to combine camping and hunting for fear of stampeding the deer herds and being run over. Lol
Great thing about rice is you need very little to make it taste good. A few spices, herbs, a little/lot of fat and maybe some bacon added to a huge amount of rice and you are good to go. Temporarily. But you need to get back to the meat really quick.
Thanks for recommending Ben Beauchamp. When are you doing a backwoods sauna? Sweat lodge, Russian bath, the Sami sauna …. Its an emblem of the north. Love your stuff Xander. 👍
Watching you guys' camping experience makes my electric blanket so welcoming. LOL Man, it looked frigid out there, and it appeared y'all needed a good tent. The grouse was beautiful. We don't have those here in the South; I bet it was delicious after several meals of just rice, huh? Either way, I believe everyone should get out and try to catch, gather or hunt a meal or two. It has a way of making a person thankful for the little things in life.
30-06 same here! Spent a week deer hunting rifle as well in Ontario, lots of rubs, scrapes, and trails. Bumped two does just like you did unfortunately no available shots. All a learning experience for my first deer hunting season and next year hopefully we fill those freezers!

Cheers
Imagine a meateater x xandorf buttnipple episode, holyyy! Steve and Xandings having a good time
Thanks for taking us hunting with you guys. Gotta say, taking full on bites out of a stick of better is next level 😊👍
We need a Xander and Outdoor boys collaboration!!!
Hope to see more hunting along with all the great trips you already do
When I'm out hunting it's just so cool h[w all of a sudden you see deer slowly walking through the woods just on the edge of sight and if they are laying down and think you can't see them they will lay there and let you walk on by
we all love you Xander, your the wisest and a humble guy , your bought up very well by your parents , Love from India 💗
I could listen to Tosh’s voice for days… Great video, from Brisbane, Aus
Xander I love your videos and I really want to go off-grid camping you are my inspiration🔥⛺
That big set of mushrooms was very edible and tasty. You also walked past some rose hips for vitamins and flavored hot water.
Big ups for Hunter Budnick!
Nothing like Wild Game😋 Glad to see you and Toshie get out! Thanks for sharing man🙏
Thansks for watching ❤️
Good to see Tosh here hooking up with you for this adventure!
Forgot to put push notifications on - I’ll never miss a video again! You’re an inspiration, Xander! 🤝
Cool video. It's always good to have a beginner mind and not be afraid to make mistakes. You guys seem to have good chemistry. I look forward to more of your hunting videos.
Great video, have you ever been on a hunt?
One ❤
I've sent you a message. One ❤
I love it when you share rice to your friend...its like what we do here in the Philippines...❤💯 you're avid fan and subscriber from Tagaytay City Cavite Philippines...
Thank you for allowing me to experience such beauty and excitement!!
Absolutely loved this video. Got into hunting in my early thirties with my best mate. Such an awesome thing to do. Keep the videos coming.
There's no person I've ever been more excited to see hunt. Watching this video after my first time hunting today is epic.
Grouse was the first thing I ever hunted, was inspired by you and Clay Hayes and took my first ever animal with a recurve bow solo. Got the grouse out of a tree. Super fun seeing you get back into hunting again
Love you and Tosh out there surviving. More tosh ❤❤❤❤❤❤incredible production quality
Acorns are edible, but not in large quantities due to the tannins they have in them. You can soak them or boil them to remove the tannins. They can also be made into flower, or ground and pressed to extract the oil.
Cast and blast fall trips are what I look forward to all year for myself! Thanks for sharing yours.
Butter in coffee is the bomb. A fat bomb. Quite tasty.
What a totally cool, very different vibe to this one. Loved it. And man, that grouse looked amazing!! I bet it was so freaking appreciated!
Wow, delicious food. Do you like to eat grouse?
I actually killed my first deer today on a solo public lands hunt in Texas. It was a surreal experience and a humane kill. It died within seconds. Super pumped to see your hunting videos! Excited for you to get your first deer.
Find a white oak tree with lots of acorns and get up wind of it and try to make a blind with brush or use a bush or anything to get behind and your chances will be pretty good because white oak acorns are the deers favorite
Brother I've been watching you since the beginning, the things your videos have got me through but man, more hunting context please. This was an amazing watch, thank you!
I just discovered your channel. Great videos! You're little one-liners you throw out crack me up. I've never had the opportunity to go to Canada, the country is absolutely beautiful. I'm in Tennessee, so I usually have to watch RUclips to see real snow. 2" is about all we ever get and it's gone in 48 hrs.
Cool to see you out with a buddy to shake things up.
What do you want for dinner? [Tosh - serious face] I could really go for some rice LMFAO
Great to see you trying something new. And with Tosh too! Beard looks cool. ❤
Man I love doing stuff like that. Nothing in this world like it
Brother one day I will get to see Canada 🇨🇦 ,, I can only imagine how it feels seeing such beautiful country…. Hope you had a great time…be safe and have fun…🫡
Where you from Kenneth? UK?
@@AgxntAqua Texas and it suck’s ass wind 💨 here friend,, lol ,, government says everything is bad for you if it wasn’t made by a pharmaceutical company that pays the government what they want from them and therefore it suck’s here
@@AgxntAqua just ready to escape from this nightmare and breathe again…
If your worried about overregulation, don't visit Ontario.
I'd suggest visiting the mountains out West (Alberta side). Ontario is like our New York.
@@AgxntAqua already…👍🏻
Xander, the films are amazing. So grateful for the stuff you make and show us.
Texan here. We are getting our first real cold front of the fall tomorrow. Might even see the 50s (Fahrenheit) tomorrow!! Love watching you explore Canada with all the beautiful changing seasons.
Edit: 50 might as well be Antarctica for us Texans
Great job guys. I only started about 6 years ago and I look at it the same way. So much to learn and so much time in the woods :)
Nate
Your videos just ceap getting better and better!
