Im with you. It led me to the existential thought of why do I play video games? I play video games to waste time, but I don't want a video game to waste my damn time. too many meaningless things that are not fun at all. It's a shame that I've been waiting for this game for a decade and I think it's shit.

My guess is that they were going to go down that road but after lots of people speculated and got upset about it, the company decided it was too big a risk. They had a chance to do something genuinely interesting, but they gotta make money I guess.

I made it to chapter 9 and called it a day.
It's a beautiful game with a lot to love and they clearly put a lot of care into the making of it.
However, as someone who never played the original but enjoyed Remake, I just can't get past the fact that there is zero story.
Every location you visit is just 'well, some random robed guys went there so i guess we should too and we can kill time at the beach or the arcade because hey, the world threat can wait. And once we're done doing stuff that has nothing to do with our goal we'll move to the next place. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum'.

    • @boredsoim01
      @boredsoim01 6 месяцев назад +1

The 90 hours of gameplay in both Rebirth and Remake account for roughly 30ish hours of the original 1997 game. And that game had random encounters for 5 of those hours. There were way better paced plot points in the original, and character mysteries kept the player engaged. In Remake/Rebirth, a lot of those mysteries are spoiled by sephiroth dropping in every 2 hours for some exposition or vague threats. Should have been one game as a 1:1 remake, 90 to 100 hours max, 60 hours without the chaff. Square Enix has been a bad game developer for a long time and it really shows with how they have fumbled the easiest slam dunk in game making history.

  • @Nosidda
    @Nosidda 5 месяцев назад

The story is a convoluted mess of a trendy mystery box plotline, a form of storytelling that is GROSSLY overused in media these days, which streaming services are particularly to blame for it. The open world is a large void of nothingness, with absolutely nothing interesting or fun to do that's interesting, and only exists for the mere sake of having an open world to please the people who would've complained if it wasn't open world. The combat is overly complex and tedious, and twists the brain in all the worst ways due to its insistence on trying to create a hybrid of action and turn-based (again, to try and get people to not complain) that simply does not work. The side activities are generic and uninteresting, with side quests that offer little to no incentive to get involved in them while also having WAY too many of them. Not to mention the mini games being way too high in number, and are NOT fun at all most of the time (I will not budge from the opinion that Queens Blood is hands down the worst card game in the series, and that includes freaking TETRA MASTER). None of these things are being done well, the way the devs handled the story, characters, world, gameplay, all of it is bad. Granted it's not awful, I've played far worse games, this is certainly no Sonic 06. But it's definitely not good either.
And this is before mentioning how ridiculously fanservicey this freaking game is. Holy shit people, can we please go one damn minute without Tifas boobs taking center stage somehow?? Good Lord...
Anyway, I consider Rebirth to be fairly average. If I had to put a number on this game, I'd say it's a 6/10. It does a lot of things wrong, but does have a few redeeming factors. The music is amazing, the graphical technology behind this game is mind-blowing, the characters are energetic and fun (Not a fan of Cloud though), and the voice acting is good. But sadly, to me the good simply does not outweigh the bad.
Give me XVI any day, it was a far better game overall. If any modern FF game should set standards, it's XVI, not Rebirth.
Also, I'm gonna say it. I think most of the love for this game stems from pure nostalgia. I can't help but wonder if y'all would still love the game this much if it had zero attachments to FF7 in any way.

As someone who didn’t play he original: I liked remake, I liked the story and I liked it being linear. In rebirth it feels like you barely get any story, I’m 25 hours in, at gold saucer and what have we done so far ? *SPOILER chapter 1-7* follow hooded men trying to find sephiroth and being hold up by random stuff that doesn’t play into the big picture. Oh and barret has an interesting backstory. That’s it , after 25 hours. Nothing more than that. I understand why people who played the OG liked this. Because what just feels empty for us or just a normal zone is for the OGS the interpretation of the low pixels 2d areas they played in the OG. I understand how this itself is a great experience. Is it a bad game, no. It is a slightly above average rpg with amazing story bits and cut scenes when they are there. From the perspective of someone who didn’t play the OG.

  • @pittsworth
    @pittsworth 6 месяцев назад +16

The best parts of the game are when it’s just hitting the og story beats, like when Barret explains his past and everyone is all somber then the extra scene with them in the gondola and Yuffie tries to cheer everyone up is so good, they absolutely shat the bed with the multiverse story BS, massive fail on the part of the devs, no one will be talking about this remake project in a few years whereas the Original will stand the test of time even though its graphically outdated

As a "hardcorist" FF fan who has played every mainline game in the series, I couldn't agree with your assessment more. Rebirth was a step backwards from Remake for all the aspects you mentioned. They could have filled the open world with much more compelling content than 7 zones of hunt and gather and hunts. The side quests in town were fun, made me feel like I was actually interacting with the world. Same with the protorelic quest, that is a truest to form FF side quest that you will find in the series. All the other junk is there just to fill time. I have 100+ hours on my save and probably half of that is just the time-buffer crap they filled the game with.

I love Rebirth. But you gotta remeber, The large Ps1 RPG had no content in the world map. It was only used for going from point A to point B. So, They added side content in the world. Otherwise it would just be large zones with monster and nothing in them for no reason. Which would be lame. Plus, SE at least said nothing is missable. You can do it at your own leisure. And dont have to grind it out. But hey, Not everyone will love everything. At least ya played it. 👍
And hopefully the 3rd game will speak to ya. Also, some of the things in the open world are semi pulled from aspects of the original game. Just done differently. Id say go back and play the Ps1 version. Maybe youll see some of it? Anyway, I love the game. And even if you didnt, You gave a fair opinion on it. Which you can have. Hopefully trolls dont fly in. For me it was the way they did it. The first open world section seemed really cool. But by the 6th, still doing those towers and lifesprings and summon ruins and those silly chocobos and owls and stuff, it got really old. It felt more like I was playing some overpriced Ubisoft title rather than final fantasy. Add to that how they changed almost every part of the story with the aim to make it longer to pad out the run time, it just was a bit of a rubbish experience. They get some things right, the characters are mostly great, the battles, the music is mostly good (although even that got weird at times as they experimented too much). I dunno it’s just not FF7 really, it’s some extended universe millennial spin off.

I truly felt the same way as you and I really liked that you are critiquing it and not just raging like some youtubers do it. For me this, is super overrated, at BEST a 7/10.
And the way they interact, so many, so much slow ass cutscenes and they couldn't come up with more meaningful interactions between the characters. The best thing about FFs is the occasional random quips and interactions between the characters, and I just felt they were so tropey. Don't get me started with Cloud, even much more stoic than the OG. So many characters and the only intereactions they could come up with were with Cloud. How about make some interactions between Tifa and Yuffie? or Aerith and Barret? They barely interact with each other. You got all these slow ass forced in-game cutscenes that they couldn't insert a random conversation here and there?
And the maps? 5 copy paste regions of each other. Oof. Only things that were phenomenal were of course, the graphics, and the fcking music. The latter because of course Masashi Hamauzu (FFXIII composer) was in charge. Always nails it out of the park with his scores.

People really need to just let go and stop trying to relive the original. The remake series is NOT INTENDED to be consumed as if it's the original. The pacing is fine, the story is great, the character depth is 100x better than it ever was in the original, and it also answers a ton of questions from the originals. People complaining about this game is a literal case of "can't please everybody". Also I highly doubt you've "finished" the game. 100% it, then say you've completed it, the "story" is just an element of it. Complaining about "padding" and such when the original RELIED on padding with things such as the chocobo grind or the omnislash grind. Seeing people complain that they actually got a "full" game instead of a "storybook" is honestly an L for the FF7 community.

The rest of that 4 hours really just feels like filler. There are soooo many design choices that seem to exist for the sole purpose of making something take longer. To their credit, they have made these tasks feel somewhat fun. But it feels like cheap slot machine fun. Bright lights and pleasant sounds to give you a hit of dopamine without any real substance. Ff7 rebirth has felt more like a spin off game designed around a carnival philosophy than anything else. Im praying it gets better. Really enjoyed the first two regions but chapter 3-6 has really been wearing me down with virtually zero narrative push in 3 whole chapters and forced mini game after mini game.

Once he realized that he wasn't getting much main story out of the Open World activities, all he had to do was stop doing them and focus on the story. If his review was more along the lines of "If you didn't like Open World design before, FFVII Rebirth won't change your mind" that would be different.

After I finished FF VII Remake and Rebirth, a friend recommended XV to me.
And I have to say that the 15 has grown on me even more than any other part I've played.
I love open world, the battle system (I don't use the waitmode) and I don't even need to start with the Regalia (all versions).
And the OST gave me chills. Especially “Apocalypse Noctis”
When I think of FFVII's graphics, the wall jpg of Midgar is always the first thing that comes to mind.
In the 15th, everything is "alive" up to the horizon and the day-night cycle also brings in dynamism.
And I also particularly like the little things, such as Noctis getting dirty from fighting and fishing, or his hairstyle no longer being neat due to the rain.
I also like the dynamic between the guys more.
In the 7, I'm particularly bothered by the whining and pushy nature of Tifa's character.
The story of 15 is a bit confusing, I don't want to contradict that, but since I know or have all the media around, I can figure out the connections.
The story of 7 is largely known, but now the changes make the story more complicated for players who know the original.
As far as linear the chapters go after leaving Altissia before arriving Insomnia,And I thought it was really good that it had the chance to travel back into the past again, for example to take a deep breath before the journey with the bros came to an end.
And I actually enjoyed doing that again.
FF VII Rebirth is no different, only that here there really is no turning back.
The campfire scene at the end of FFXV killed me.
Just the boys and the crackling of the fire.
There is no need for dramatic musical accompaniment to make this scene so emotionally powerful.
Which was already introduced very well in Crisis Core.
And brought tears to my eyes in both.
    😭
Since I've found Zack to be my favorite FFVII character since Crisis Core, I'm naturally very excited to see how he fits into the whole story.
All in all, I'm really looking forward to the third part of the 7.
But the 15 will probably remain number one for me for the time being.

I played all ff games since X and since XV I'm getting disappointed continously (except for XIV. That's just a masterpiece on a way too old engine) by every single new game. XVI was nice but all great characters died and I hated the ending. VII Remake was just a pain in the ass cause I'm not used to only be allowed to explore on a very tight leash and the game itself was so slow in terms of story development. But I wanted to finish it to be ready for the next title.
Which is...damn. Awful. The story drags even more, you could've deleted like 10h of "story" especially in the beginning, technically all open world chores and half the mini games and I would've loved the game it to tears. But like this it's so hard to keep my interest up to finish it. I don't know the original but I'm tempted to play it only for the story which makes me feel absolutely nothing in the new game. Sure there are some nice scenes. I love the new design, the music is awesome as always, the world looks beautiful (if you ignore the floor level design in gongaga where half of the time I just wondered how to get to places) and there's just so much potential. But instead we get a "open world" which is even worse than Ubisoft (hell that's bad. That's just sooo bad!), annoying side characters (chadley and Mai, I'm looking at you), sadley very mixed quality voice acting in German (I should play it in English next time. Maybe that's better) and apart from the meaningless side quests which add absolutely nothing to the overall lore except for those few where the main charas tell you about themselves a bit there's just nothing interesting about this game until Cosmo Canyon! And that's what, 68% of "story progression". Wtf.
It's getting more interesting now but it just makes no sense so far. Nothing makes sense. There are no connections, questions get asked and thrown away mid sentence to just leave the player in the mist. Damn I don't want to play anymore. But I want to finish it my to have more headspace and time again for better games. So that I can say I played it and let it rot in the closet until the last (and hopefully better) part gets released

I'm with you. It's not a terrible game, and there are a lot of things I liked about it. but I did not enjoy it nearly as much as Remake. My biggest issues with the game was just too long and had too much bloat and padding. They decided to go the ubi soft route and just put a bunch of filler in the game that didn't need to be there. It follows the ubi soft formula to a T.
By the time I got to Chapter 12 of Rebirth I was burnt-out. I mean holy crap this game is long. I had to force myself to keep on playing in order to beat it. From Chapter 12 onwards I was just going through the motions. The main story of Rebirth could probably be beaten in 30 to 40 hours, however there is a lot of padding in the form of tacked-on mini games most of which are mandatory in order to progress in the story, its ridiculous. It's why i enjoyed Rebirth a lot less then Remake. Remake actually respected my time. It was more focused and streamlined Remake is a perfect example of sometimes less is more. after Rebirth, I needed a long break from open world RPGs. The best way to describe Rebirth is...just an exhausting game to play. The ending was very unsatisfying all that multi-verse nonsense just made the game's storyline a convoluted mess. and after I beat Rebirth, I feel the exact same way you do. My excitement for Part 3 is pretty much gone. I'll probably still play it but I am that excited for it.
Oh and I hate Chadley. Screw that kid.

To be fair, in the OG games, you would spend hours in the open world grinding away by getting into random fights to level up your characters. The side quests in rebirth sorta replace that old school way of “grinding”. Frankly, I’d rather do activities with objectives to earn EXP, as mundane as they may be, than run in circles for hours getting into fights. That said, the side activities are completely optional so you don’t have to do any of it.

I firmly disagree. It plays fine and is perfect. And you don’t know a lot of nothing. I’m sorry but they give you so much to go off of. They gave the fan what they wanted and the open world is amazing and feeling lived and it feels alive. There’s not much I hated about this game outside of breaking boxes, I loved all of this game. They have a lot of conversations and a lot of interactions, and if you played any of the side stories, you would realize that all the side stories have to do with the characters individually and you’re taking on side stories that have you working one on one with characters, even if you’re with the whole party, one character is usually invested in the situation, so yes, they move the game very well. I just don’t think you grasp that idea of them having conversations and them living in a world that feels broken. I mean in real life you don’t fill conversation when you’re walking somewhere with somebody, so why would you do that in the game. Just my thoughts. I think you took this game and didn’t understand it the way that you think you did. Sorry but this game might have gone over your head.

Fully disagree but my critiques are
    Minigames
    Stealth
Lack of playable Shinra Manor guy
Open world is mostly optional. Pretty easily skippable. It's basically "you want to get more out of this?" Do this.
However i did almost no open world and it was 62 hours on easy.
If they were talking to each other, it would be more bloated than people are complaining about.
Essentially rebirth IS ff7 bloated. Shinra mansion and chocobo catching are bad. The repetitive intel is somewhat difficult.
However the 20 hours would be just chillin on easy skipping all scenes bcuz 62 hours and only having done summons (minus secret and odin before finish) yeah. Your time thing is a bit off maybe but mostly valid critiques.
Part 3 will likely be more story driven as we are in a HUGE crossroad.
Your opinion is fully valid and I'm glad that you came at it without irrational anger though this is a good video I have a little bit of an issue with the ending I'm looking up some more information on exactly what's going on to see if I can see it from A New Perspective but that's about it either way I'd give it a solid 8.5 / 10 it would be a 9/10 or a 9.5 if I was just critiquing the story because that's good and I'm excited for the next game a little bit less as well however there's a part of me that does want to see what they're going to do with all this personally the original is still my favorite but I played it so many times I may have to just replay remake and intermission and hot take here I think Crisis Core is the best out of all of them except for the OG ff7 also I think ff9 is the best and I'm not sure that a remake for that would work out really well unless it's a reskin because the story in Final Fantasy 9 was Shakespearean all I want them to do is speed up the battle system to be closer to ff7 and keep everything else I don't even think they should change the combat style to that active kind but I don't know how they would pull that off anyway there's my thoughts your thoughts are valid I pretty much agree with most of it but I'm a little bit more partial to the open world I guess because I grew up with Morrowind and I like doing everything at a game like in Crisis Core I spent about 240 hours on that and that one was bloated with the 300 missions but it was kind of addicting

There is something you have to understand, the story stuff you are describing has a name. It's called mystery boxes and they only exist to manipulate the audience into hype. There is nothing good ever in the box because your imagination will always create something more fantastic for your personal point of veiw. They are always a letdown and a bad story tellers go to move.
There is a direct parallel between the excitement you got from remake and the disappointment rebirth gave you. Thats why many people were pissed with the story changes to begin with. It's not just that they changed the story it's the nature of mystery boxes and how they work. It's a cheap trick and FF7 deserved better than that.
Mystery box storytelling has absolutely saturated modern media. Consider yourself lucky, now you know what they are, how they function, why they function and how to avoid it all together.

How did they change the story? Cloud and the gang are new to the open world, everything in the open world are not linked to the actions of the previous game unless it's directly associated with characters you already met in the previous game. If they were not introduced in the previous game then everything is new moving forward including how they craft the story based on the original game.
As for mystery box and changing the story. You guys are the only ones that expected a mystery boxes and hype trains. I already knew the original game so I didn't expect anything other than improvements of the original story and changing what didn't work from the original game outside of Midgar. Remember, everything outside of Midgar is free game, under the word remake. Rebirth and Remake were meant to be different from the jump while still connected to each other. The worst FF 7 Rebirth can be considered is average, but trash, overrated maybe, but not trash. I got past 65% of the story and quests and I can say at best, it's an average game with a bit of nostalgia. Trash is just bullshit artist personal feelings nonsense. Personally disliking something without proper evaluation of what works and don't work in a game, including removing yourself out of the equation and considering yourself as well in that eqaution, is a sign of disorganization. I can't trust the words of other who aren't looking at everything that works and don't work. I don't even think most players even consider ever single factor of any game, but they like to talk like they do. Sometimes I even check myself when I do it.
By the way, this is my last post for this channel, like I said to the other guy, I'm not trying to help this dude's channel through comments. This message is going into limbo so don't bother to reply because you won't get a response. I'm moving on to bigger and better things.

They changed almost every part of the story and in my opinion for the worst. You say they “improved” upon it or it didn’t work but maybe you weren’t a fan of the original story or one of the people calling for it to be remade. Off the top of my head they watered down pricilla, they made Dyne weak and confused anyone who didn’t play the OG, they made the prison a fun minigame hub, they made Setos sacrifice worthless by letting Gi escape into the canyon. Sometimes less is more and this game was like “oh you know Shinra mansion? We made it a hojo prison”. That wasn’t to improve the story, it was to bloat the gameplay because without adding unneccessary stuff to every part of the plot it would be really obvious that this is 1/3 of a game sold as a full one.

If you're playing rebirth (or remake) to go through all the storybeats of the original at a reasonable pace, you're gonna have an awful time. The padding in these two games are insanity.

The added card game alone is such an incredible time sink. I groan if I'm watching a playthrough and they head for the card tables!

To be fair that’s probably the single best addition to the game. I didn’t mind the concept of the protorelics either but it seemed like after the first two they got really uncreative with them and I just wanted them over with. The Turks one could have been really good if it was actually doing the mission in Kalm they described and not just a battle simulator.

@@jaybee4288the protorelic stories were crap but I really didn’t understand the hate for the rest of the open world stuff. The rewards for doing them are absolutely insane, and the side quests are way better than remake. Corel is one of the best open worlds I’ve seen in a while.
