Evan Bigelow (1923-2021), my father, served on the USS Woolsey from 1940 - 1946 (plank holder). His position was that of fireman in the uppermost cabin on the ship and his duty was to sight the cannons. No doubt he was involved firing the cannon shots in this video. He was always proud of his service on the Woolsey. After the war, he participated in the annual get togethers of the crew members up till the end, maybe around 1990's or so. After the war, the ship was moth-balled in South Carolina and the moved to the Navy shipyard in Boston and finally scrapped from there. Thank you for documenting this piece of history and those of the greatest generation who served.

Depending on when this video was taken, my dad could have been the helmsman on the WOOLSEY during this video. He was a QM striker -> QM2 in her from shortly after North Africa campaign till she came back stateside for overhaul post Southern France invasion. He was the special sea detail helmsman most of that time.

My dad was a gunner. He used to go to the reunions for the Tin Can Sailors. I wonder if they knew each other.

@@annebliss2817 he told me that when he first came aboard, he was assigned to the forward 5” gun’s handling room, where the powder and shells are handed from the magazines and sent up to the gun. Well, word came down to clear all forward compartments for possible ramming (of a Uboat). Dad said, one of the guys in a magazine had the door un dogged and was on the ladder out of the space faster than he could turn around to climb the ladder! Evidently, that sailor had been on another DD and had a bad experience!

@@stephenbritton9297 interesting. I wish I knew more about my dad's experiences. All I know is that he was fearless. He was the #1 gunner.
