  • In today's video we will go over a general background and overview of the Fletcher class of destroyers of the United States Navy. Along with that we will discuss the career of USS O'Bannon the most decorated ship of the class. As a disclamier the map animations in the video are not entirely accurate and are there as a guide to give you a general sense of where the ship is at.

The fact many of the Fletcher-class ships were still in service all the way up until 2001 is a testament to the engineering and design of the ship class!

Definitely cover Kidd first. Johnstons story is everywhere. Kidd, not so much.

Well unfortunately Johnston’s story is already written. So that’ll be coming next weekend!

I was on the USS Fletcher DD992. From 1990 to 1993. One of the most badass ships at the time. You don't want to be on deck when those guns go off. The coolest one we had was the Phalanx. Hit shot like a wave of bullets that would disintegrate anything that went through it. A great time in my life

I was aboard the Fletcher in Subic Bay. The bridge wings had added panels to hold all the ribbons and awards.

We visited the Kidd this summer(2023). She is very close to her World War II configuration.

My 1st duty assignment when joined the Navy in 1961 was the USS Radford DD-446, Sister Ship of the USS Fletcher DD-445, Home Port Pearl Harbor. I went on and Served on many Destroyers. I was and am a Re-tired "Tin-Can" Sailor.

One more comment about these Sleek Greyhounds of the Sea. Original Fletcher Class Destroyers were fitted with Five 5" gun mounts, 2 mounts forward and 3 mounts Aft. Plus Torpedo Tubes Port and Starboard Amidships. I have hearing loss from those 5" Guns. I was a Signalman aboard those Tin-Cans...

I came across an old picture of a Fletcher class destroyer that had been modified on the mid to aft section to carry a catapult with a Kingfisher Float plane .
Those of which were use for Long Range Scouting and Fire Support for the Larger Battle Ships .

The Fletcher in the video serving in the Mexican "E-01" was originally DD 573, The USS Harrison. My father served on her from 1944 until she was decommissioned by the US Navy in 1946.

Could you do a video about the Caldwell-class, Wickes-class, and Clemson-class Destroyers?

Very few sources on youtube about ships with guns, I really like ships with guns. Wish there were more like you, but atleast you churn out content really fast

What do you mean very few? There is no shortage of content on warships on this platform, admittedly most of it is either clickbait garbage, focus on video games, or both, but there is still plenty of great channels with no shortage of content. I would recommend Battleship New Jersey, and Drachinifel.

Why no mention of the loss of the Strong in the Kula Gulf, a Fletcher class destroyer????? You only mentioned that a cruiser was lost. Lost to a long lance torpedo.

Because this video is well over a year old and I was just starting out. I didn’t really know what I was doing in terms of scope. So, that leads us to problems where older and lower quality videos like this one not having nearly enough depth. Hope this helps explain it :).
