Just put this optic on my M&P 10mm and I love it, had a problem with the buttons not working but changed the battery and works perfectly, appreciate the video
Looks like a great option. I really like Vortex for rifle optics, but never considered them for pistol. Will look forward to some info on how well these hold up.
battery runtime is way down the list of deciding factors - if its measured in months & years - I’m good. I tend to swap batteries out considerably sooner than any manufacturers recommendations anyway when it comes to risk-based activities. why risk it?? lol thanks for the clear-eyed review - very helpful
One of the most appealing things is the button layout. Holosun are so small and same side. Not one person mentioned this yet in any review I have seen. Would also like to see more detail on size comparison/width vs holosun 507/407k.
We're talking about optics intended for defensive use on subcompact pistols. Why do you need buttons that are easy to adjust? It's not like a lethal threat is going to stop and wait for you to get your light intensity set where you want it before the try to kill you. Stuff like that is nice on the range, and thus absolutely has a place on full size pistols. Subcompacts are purpose built. In practical application, even the iron sights are somewhat insignificant. The threat is likely within 10 ft. If you need optics or sights to put hits center mass at 10 ft, you need more practice and no amount of tech is going to change that. Keep in mind, that I'm not talking about shooting the wings off of a gnat. I'm talking about making center mass hits under extreme duress from roughly 3 to 4 armlengths away. I'm not convinced that optics are helpful in such an endeavor, but I am certain that bigger or better buttons are not. Now, if you're competing or hunting or doing anything else that doesn't directly relate to trying to stay alive for the next 5 minutes, then by all means have buttons that are easier to use.
This looks cool, especially the diamond texturing on the front for manipulating the gun off of stuff. The height may be a negative on an ultra-compact gun. Typically you'd go with one of those instead of something like a g19 because of ease of carry. The added height from a red dot contributes a good deal to printing. So the height is great for tracking the dot under recoil, but for a gun intended to be tiny and carry well, I prefer the lower profile window. YMMV. It's a shame they couldn't use a side-load battery and make this as an enclosed optic like the holosun eps carry. For this size, the enclosed option of the eps carry still puts it above this one in features.
As a long time Vortex user, the 12-14 hr made sense with the push button. You push it once at the start of your shift and its good. Having a shake awake + 14 hr doesn't make sense. Am I missing something? I've worked with people on duty, most optics ride in a trunk or on your belt and will be moved constantly. When those people put it down it is to be off-shift or to sleep. Even when the 9 hour shift guy goes home, his optic doesn't move for 10-12 hr. avg. That means these guy's optics WILL NEVER GO OFF during a work week.
True. But, it could be on 24/7 for over a year before it dies, and with the 1632 battery type it uses only being 60¢/ea, I'm okay with it being on always. A 10 pack of batteries will buy me 10+ years of battery life, for $6
I’m in the market to buy a RDS. But an opened emitter isn’t really my cup of tea anymore. And it’ll take Saged Dynamics at least 2-3 weeks before he drops a review. No thanks, Holosun EPS for the win! 😁
@SoFloFlow An it takes a 1620... ever see that at a CVS? 2032 and 1632 are annoying enough as it is (especially the 1632). Also if you don't have an RMR or MOS cut the 509 is annoying. However, C&H makes several direct adapter plates for a lot of the most common guns. An if you use one of those plates, there's no tougher mounting system out there. Except maybe the ACRO, which is basically the same.
@James Whitworth interesting point with the batteries. Hadnt considered that. I have a 509T with a C&H plate. My issue with it is its a very tall mounting solution. Id rather it cowitness with the sights. Pros & cons to each I guess!
Pros: durable. Mounts directly to MOS slide. Affordable. Top mounted battery. Can easily use factory height irons as backups. Con: relatively low battery life. Can be offset by manually turning it off when not carrying.
I'm really liking everything about the Defender that your review showed. I am a Vortex fan on my rifles. Did I miss the part where you showed a visual and compared the reticles side by side, on all three, as if I were shooting?? Not being a SA, just didn't catch it after watching twice. Thanks for the reviews!
The holosun may be better anyway if Vortex uses pulsing to adjust brightness, like all their other red dots. Personally, if you want an upgrade I'd look at Primary Arms new ACSS Vulcan version of the 507k. Which is an awesome reticle option on a carry gun.
@@project86xero With the ACSS reticle, there is NO comparison between the 507 and this Vortex. The 507 wins hands down and by a WIDE margin. The FOV is perceivably larger. Big deal. Its a red dot.
