Hey everyone! Thank you so much for watching the video - Dave is answering specific questions...his slide out storage system certainly has me thinking! So cool! Thanks again! We'll see you on the trail!
Overland Bound IF anyone wants my shopping list and cut list for this design I made a build thread on it a couple of months ago. www.overlandbound.com/forums/threads/overland-camping-drawer-photo-heavy.16021/
Someone should totally patten, build, sell, line there pockets with cash on this. I mean if anyone has something better I would like to see it before I nerd out for David 👍👍👍
Hugh Smitham great question and mostly a good answer. This is a KCK Mount and Klayton who designed it, has made a newer mount to fit Yaesu. I helped him work on the prototype as the Baofeng Mount is a little small. Email him squareup.com/store/KCK/item/radio-mount-w-nut
I just had to pause and comment. Right after he said “I don’t have an instagram channel am I out too” RUclips decided it was time for a commercial break. Perfect timing. I nearly busted out laughing.
This is by far, still one of the best setups that would work for me. Really cool setup. Love the idea of the working man’s daily driver/adventure setup.
Winston Seejattan And this chap thanks you. My hope was to give people ideas that are attainable and don’t involve 48” of wheel travel on monster tires, but with some thoughtful additions you can do most of what you want to do. 👍🏻
My DD is an Enduro motorcycle, but when broken bones keep me from bending a limb I use my overland rig. Love the straight forward, no BS builds. Please keep them coming.
That has to be one of the best slide out kitchens I've ever seen. I need to look up some details on those sliders and coffee table brackets. Great work!
Matt Ringel Glad you liked the build! I posted a build link under Michael’s pinned comment. These are the sliders I used www.cabinetparts.com/p/fulterer-drawer-slides-side-mount-drawer-slides-FULFR5400L56
Literally there is no sh$% in the back of my truck, metaphorically you can stuff the bed like a burrito, but figuratively speaking with the rack and bed you could fit the kitchen sink if one wanted. I brought along half of the gear I carry for a week long trip for this walk around. Idk about you but I’m only packing all that gear if I’m going somewhere cool! Thanks for the comment ;)
I just bought my first 2016 Tacoma. It has a 3inch lift & level. Also, tires are 33x12.5xR70. This is my daily truck. I like the vid gives me some ideas.
That drawer is great, and I know he went on to start the slide out kitchen company that is amazing. Really want to make something like it. How long did the wood construction hold up? That's my main concern in he back of my truck. I do have a cover, but not sure if I can paint it, bed liner, or what to make it survive back there.
It held up great, and I used furniture grade 1/2” plywood. I glued and nail gunned the joints. This drawer was covered in PU, but if weather is an issue try to find a BBQ cover that fits your dimensions and that will work. We will soon have custom weatherproof covers for our Pull Kitchens that fit like a glove. But for DIY that might be a great route. Thanks for the great feedback :)
Hey Awesome !!! Another Tacoma guy. Way to go Dave. I have the 17' TRD OR and its awesome. We dont have solid axles but we have a winch and patience , lol. We will make it...
Rick Mccraw I LOVE my tacoma. We’ve got a rear solid axle, and when we get slow on the extreme rock crawling we make up for flying through the desert with our IFS :) Glad you liked my build
Wow. That rig is both not really that heavily modified, yet every mod is thoughtful and oftentimes genius level. Fabulous truck and overlanding philosophy!
Thanks for the video. I have a 2019 Tacoma, and was planning to make a slider like Dave made. For now I bought a heavy duty appliance rollers for my 55 gallon tough tote for camping storage. Easy for my back.
Probably one of the best “daily driver overland rigs” I’ve seen. That box is pretty amazing! So much detail and craftsmanship...great job! Can you build me one?
You can build one yourself and just mod the design for your rig www.tacomaworld.com/threads/overland-drawer-build-diy-camping-drawers-pic-heavy-thread.554249/
Michael Nares Glad you like it! Takes some work to build but very satisfying when it’s in use! On the pinned post by Michael there’s some plans and info if interested
I was hoping to hear about the tonneau cover. Looks like a DiamondBack SE. You need something strong to support the weight you've got on that thing, so wondering if an SE can handle it or if an HD is required.
Mad Max The Diamondback SE cover can handle 500lbs, but the KB Voodoo racks have tonneau brackets that go around a cover and put the weight on the bedsides. So the weight is on the cover and on the bed rails. Works out really nicely. I’ve changed my drawer since then and my roof top tent.
Thank you for including the “Get your ham ticket!” plug. Those Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, and yes, even the uber-cheap Baofeng/BTech/etc radios receive and transmit on frequencies reserved by the FCC (and spectrum authorities in every country) for use by licensed amateur radio operators only. Unfortunately, purchasing the radios doesn’t require a license, so many less-than-scrupulous online retails advertise them as “off-grid” or “off road” comms for the 4x4 crowd. Basic rule, if you can type in or dial in a frequency, not a channel, it likely requires a amateur radio operator license to operate legally. Bottom line: if you’re in the U.S.A., download any number of study apps, get your ticket (I think it’s around $30 to take the test), and enjoy the privileges of UHF/VHF comes. Search “[your city/town] amateur radio club” to get more information. 73s.
Look into Racor Garage Lifts on Amazon for quicker hoisting of gear. The jeep guys use them for removing our hard tops. They are rated for 250 lbs and under $300. I use it in a variety of ways from lifting to storage. It could make your setup even quicker to deploy.
My two cents... Car camping - Camping Off-roading - Hiking Overlanding - Thru-hiking I think that's a good comparison that most people could agree on. Who cares about the difficulty or the gear that one does or does not have?
Great build! I really like how everything is for a purpose, and that slide out drawer is brilliant!! I also really like seeing the bikes on there. I feel like backcountry exploring and mountainbiking go hand and hand. I LOVE to mountainbike, and most of the camping (I'm not going to call it "overlanding") I've done is because we were away riding somewhere, and mountainbikers spend all of there money on beer and gear, not hotels, haha. I'm currently shopping for a rig, and a big part of that is because I want a better support vehicle for my mountainbiking trips, as well as getting away further and for longer. I'm going with a larger SUV , I 'm thinking 1st gen Sequoia right now, because I want to be able to sleep IN the vehicle. I'm over setting up in the pouring rain, that seems to happen way too much. I want to be able just park and then curl up in the back.

This was a great episode. I'm doing research and this was very helpful. Only thing missing was a water supply and shower. @David Douglas, any plans to add rinse capabilities? I'm a mountain biker and want to set up my Taco like yours for attending races and camping on-site or near the event.
Gerry Creighton good question, I just got a costway water heater that has a pump built in for showers. It will pump cold water or hot like an in-line heater from my blue water cubes. So it’s portable still. I also just finished a sliding mount that holds a Quick Pitch En-suite privacy room for changing and showers. It’s mounted in front of the rack behind my rear window and pulls out to make a nice room to clean off. And for my daughters to feel more comfortable changing.
That rack design with the bikes on the side was my idea and design some of the salesman at Overland Northwest took pictures of my truck A year later they were producing that rack once again the big dogs taken advantage of the small dog it’s cool life goes on
I Am SarDog It’s probably easier to just view my install thread here, even if you don’t have a Tacoma. www.tacomaworld.com/threads/anytimebackupcamera-com-install-front-and-rear-cameras.567192/
Good video... nice setup too. Totally agree with comments re length. You seem to rush through some things ... don’t worry you won’t lose and viewers because you covering interesting stuff.
How did Dave get the Voodoo rack to go over the Diamondback cover? Does he lose the ability to lift the ends of the cover? I have a Diamondback cover and would like to explore options similar to the Voodoo rack. Thanks!
Rob Gurden KB Voodoo makes tonneau brackets that go around covers, and while the rack is on no I can’t raise the covers. The DB stays on all the time and then I leave the 4 tonneau brackets on all the time. They don’t show much and it allows me to put on my rack with just 4 bolts. The RTT is always on the rack, I move it all as one unit
Good video, but the double audio is rough, are you recording to one source? I assume voice is being picked up by both lapel mics. Maybe use independent recording and split them during editing.
Awesome rig. I want to do this to my next truck as my current DD is a 2 door and useless for the family. I love tacos but “Dodge-til-I-die” I know stupid but I’m one of the guys who only love one of the “big 3”. Therefore I was thinking a Ram 2500 is what I need. How does all the extra payload work with your taco? What is the GVW with all your gear? Not that it matters for off-roading but my trips can be 300 miles one way so fuel economy matters to me. What you getting with the taco fully loaded including your family in it? Thank you.
RT Molinari just saw this, so loaded up I’m guessing I’m adding on about 600 pounds. With airbags the truck does just fine with the weight, on the highway doing 73mph I’m getting about 17-18mpg. Off road varies greatly. Early November I joined an OLB trip to Death Valley for about 400 miles off road and it was so much fun! Climbed up a dry 8 ft waterfall all loaded up. Tacoma’s are great because they are not very wide compared to a full size, so they go most places Jeeps can. So it depends on your style of off road, as forest trails get very narrow quickly. But a Ram 2500 will give your family more interior room for sure. I purposely chose a mid-size truck because trails can be small in the Sierras by me, and some of the tighter parts of Echo Canyon in Death Valley. Just something to consider
This is a great setup. I'm also working on a daily driver/overland setup. Is the air bags on the rear your only suspension modification? And what size are your tires?
steve_ 11b Yes right now that’s it, and mainly for weight as it is a TRD Off Road with Bilstein shocks that come standard. 265/75/16 Toyo AT2 tires, quiet on the road. I got Load E heavy duty side walls for the trails
Do these 3rd gen tacomas rust? I was looking into either a Tacoma 3rd gen TRD Pro or a F150 5.0 L Aluminum body..looking for longevity and capability for off roading for camping and climbing through heavy snow
Everything rusts :) you’ll have more room in a F150 but also factor in your type of off roading as many trails I’ve been on full size vehicles wouldn’t fit. Too wide and too long. Personally I wouldn’t pay extra for the TRD Pro as the upgrades aren’t worth the extra cost. You could get a fully loaded TRD Off Road edition and take that 10k in savings and buy excellent shocks and gear with it
It’s 58” long, 16” high, and 21.5” wide. The build info is here www.tacomaworld.com/threads/overland-drawer-build-diy-camping-drawers-pic-heavy-thread.554249/
Kevin Ramirez So my Rack doesn’t mount to the cover, but there’s tonneau brackets that go around the cover and mount to the bed rails in the truck. That way I can keep my cover on. Here’s where I purchased the rack shown in the video www.max-modular.com/shop-max-modular/
Do you know exactly how or where to get one of those hood decals?I have a silver 4runner trail. The hood scoop gets a terrible reflection on sunny days. Thanks

Very nice set up. I notice Dave didn’t talk about his diamond back. Did he get the SD or the HD. Awesome set up, overall tutorial really helped.
Pete6 Holguin0 I got the SD because it holds about 500lbs on top which is way less than I have to stack on it. I don’t have ATV’s or things like that
Me too! Diamondback Covers are great
very practical set up, not over kill.. great rig!

Hey!

You could get a fully loaded TRD Off Road edition and take that 10k in savings and buy excellent shocks and gear with it
Where was this video shot? I believe I've seen this guy's rig. I love in Patterson off I5.
Milo Netzler This was shot on the edge of Livermore, Airway Blvd. I am in Ripon and sometimes pass near Patterson
Dang... in tracy myself. Need to catch that truck in person
The bloopers were awesome. Blueprints link?

What camera and switch was used at the 17 min mark? I'd like to add this to my Tacoma
BTVEZ www.anytimebackupcamera.com is a great system for Tacoma’s
Can you share the storage box dimensions? I would love to build one of those.
It’s 58” long, 16” high, and 21.5” wide. The build info is here www.tacomaworld.com/threads/overland-drawer-build-diy-camping-drawers-pic-heavy-thread.554249/
Nice Taco. Well thought out. Can’t wait to get mine.
Thank you for this - very inspiring
MilesB thanks for watching! It keeps evolving!
it's about functionality and practicality... great box
Love your vids what mods would you recommend for a ford f350 single wheel keep up the good work
I've been looking for that rack that looks to be mounted to the tonneau cover but can't find it
Kevin Ramirez So my Rack doesn’t mount to the cover, but there’s tonneau brackets that go around the cover and mount to the bed rails in the truck.
Thanks
biker bud Start here and then email him and ask about your 4Runner. I know he makes decals for tacoma hood scoops
