I was a bit out of the Booktube loop when you put this up but I saw Part 3 and realised I needed to back track to this first. I'm glad I came back to it. What fascinating history.
This was a great video! I don't think I'd ever heard of this document before, though I've learnt about other rediscovered documents in the Torah Tuesday class I used to take when I lived in Albany. I took pictures of the genizah in one of the synagogues I visited in Tzfat, the holy, mystical, artsy city I hope to live in when I move to Israel. There were lots of falling-apart old books on the shelves behind the glass doors in that room.
Very interesting, Tom, and beautifully explained. Being neither Jewish, nor Catholic, I had never heard of this book. If I understood correctly, it is considered canonical by both Roman and Eastern Orthodox Catholics and the Greek text was known, but the Hebrew text was only discovered in 1896. Fascinating.
Yes, that’s correct. In the introduction, the author says “These are the words of my grandpa”, and it was believed that this was a narrative tool, to pretend that someone else had written the book. But then the original text was found.
I’m now approaching the end of my reading of the Bible. I already decided I’m going to restart it on January 1 along with the Catechism in a Year reading. I hope you’ll continue with a series on the Books of the Bible. 😊
Hi Christina . Well done for reading the Bible right through . Watch out as It's addictive .....I've just started my third consecutive year because I remain intrigued and compelled and enthralled ....and I agree , please continue doing these videos Tom .
Looking forward to this series. I went thru the Bible in a Year podcast in 2021 and the book of Sirach was probably my favorite of the deuterocanonical books (although I loved them all).
I know that series and I know it’s amazing, even if I didn’t follow it. I’m doing something similar with my own bible reading but a bit more scattered 😅 Also I heard about next year “Catechism in one year” which sounds wonderful. The irony is that in Italy there are no social media communicators as great and effective as Bishop Barron, Fr. Mike Schmitz, or other American catholics. They should get the inspiration and produce something similar for Italian audiences as well (not sure about the content available in other languages).
Delighted to come across this . I've just started my third Bible read through. This time I'm reading the The Hebrew Bible in the order of the Jewish faith .( It gets confusing as the wisdom books in Judaism are different to those you mentioned ). Job is my favourite book and so now I guess I'm revealed as a rationalist !
Great to hear from you, Hester! Yes, I understand the Book of Ben Sira used to be a sacred text up to the time of Jesus (more or less), but then it didn’t make it into the Hebrew canon. So today it’s only found in the catholic + orthodox bibles. I also love Job! : )
So great Tom! The Hebrew scripture is a whole cosmos which I'm always tempted to fall into. Although the wisdom books, along with the prophets, are my favorite books of the bible, I haven't yet read the book of Sirach (I'm too in love with the King James Version, despite it's omissions). Can't wait to learn more.
Thanks! I knew you would have appreciated this. The “background story” here is that, a few days ago, a lovely Italian nun suggested that I read the Book of Sirach as part of my prayers. I already knew it, but reading it slowly and prayerfully is a way to find so many riches. A very life-affirming book. And about its canonization, I understand Sirach is accepted as part of the canon by Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and most Oriental Orthodox Christians.
Hi Jordan . I have The Bible app and there is a version on there of KJV with the Apocrypha if you're interested ...I read KJV in 2021 , ESV in 2022 and now am reading Lexham English Bible along side Robert Alter ... Tried Wycliffe too , which is also very beautiful ... love the journey
@@hesterdunlop3982 Thank you. I recently acquired the Norton Critical Edition of the KJV, which includes the Apocrypha. I've been working my way through Alter's translation of the Hebrew scripture and it's been endlessly fascinating. I hope to get to Wycliffe someday as well. Take care.
Welcome to the Book of Sirach video series !
I love reading noncanonized books! Well, not my original cannon ha! This was great, and I'm looking forward to more!
Such a fascinating story, right?

Awesome video about a piece of history I knew nothing about. I can’t wait to see your follow-up!
Thank you. The content is similar to Proverbs but it’s a bit more consistent, and clearly it was written by a single author.
Very interesting and informative. IMA share this w my father in AZ. Thx, Tomasso 😎👍🤓
Thanks my friend! I hope he’s doing well out there in the desert : )

That’s wonderful - I’m going to google TZSFAT right away. Good luck with your moving plans (I know they are long-term).

Nice editing!
Thank you. 🙏🏻 I try.
This sounds interesting. I just ordered a copy and will catch up when I get it.

Isn’t it part of the Apocrypha that several KJV have?
@@knittingbooksetc.2810 I believe you're right, but unfortunately my edition of the KJV does not include the apocrypha.
