  • Over the course of his career, Charles "Teenie" Harris earned the nickname “One Shot” because that is all he needed to capture the perfect photograph. Our new video series, One Shot: Teenie Harris, will explore the stories of personal growth and community development that Teenie was able to tell through the photos he took - one image at a time.
Today, we take a closer look at this photo of the Bird Boys of Pittsburgh, a home aviation club founded by K.Leroy Irvis, the first African-American speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
    About Teenie Harris:
Charles "Teenie" Harris (1908-1998) was the preeminent photographer for The Pittsburgh Courier, one of the nation's most prominent Black newspapers that shared the news of Pittsburgh's historic African-American community from 1935 to 1975. Teenie’s archive of over 70,000 images is one of the most detailed and intimate records of the Black urban experience known today.
The Teenie Harris Archive at Carnegie Museum of Art is a richly detailed chronicle ranging from World War II to the Civil Rights movement and includes entertainers, local heroes, sports, churches, and other hallmarks of everyday life.
Thanks to the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Carnegie Museum of Art has digitized nearly 60,000 of Harris' negatives, and the collection is now available online: cmoa.org/art/t...
