  • Looking forward to getting back to full health to continue exploring Wales after being away for over 30 years. This week I've been ill, taking in new shopping and looking at my utility bills as the cost of living regarding fuel continues, plus we have St David's Day with snow.
Congratulations if you recognised the title in the thumbnail is a line from the movie Brief Encounter with Celia Johnston. A perfect afternoon movie and the type which I've been watching to keep myself entertained during my illness. • Brief Encounter 1945 C...

to prevent carrots wilting, put them in a plastic dish lined with something like a chux cloth, or cloth napkin which has been dampened, then put a lid on - they will stay good for weeks. This should also work for parsnips. To stop celery wilting, cut it in short lengths, place in a ziploc bag and seal. For broccoli, cut the stalk off so that the had fits into a plastic container wit stalk resting n the bottom, place a small amount of water in botton, put lid on - again this will keep the broccoli green for weeks.

Hi from Australia.. I really enjoy your videos Sean, every day life in Wales 😊 I have some suggestions to allow your vegetables to store longer: wrap the celery in foil and pop in the fridge, it should last you a month or more… mushrooms have a lot of moisture, I either use paper towel or a “food” tea towel by putting towel on the bottom of container then a layer of mushrooms then towel then mushrooms etc and finish with towel.. it will last well over a week.. I also enjoy veggies and to be available for me with no waste, this process works very well for me.. thank you for sharing your life with us 😊 cheers Sam

I don’t know how beeswax works but foil definitely works better than plastic. If you must store celery on the counter, when it begins to wilt just shave a very thin slice off the bottom and set in a glass jar/vase in a scant bit of water and it will perk up. Works for scallions and leeks (and most fresh herbs) too if they begin to dry out.

I live in France and all fruit and veg are sold by weight, price per kg so can be expensive now. We would rather eat less of good quality fresh food than fill up on lower priced food. Not sure if anyone else has done this, but you can tell if eggs are fresh if you put them in a jug of cold water, they will float if they are old and off but sink if they are fresh . I think the decomposing egg has gas in them and it makes them rise to the top of the cold water

Maybe not enough room, you could wrap them in paper towels or an old tea towel and put them in the fridge. Make an outdoor fridge.. put them in a box outside. I have used an old cat carry box, so they breathe and animals can't get to them. You can get a large plastic box with lid.. if need be, poke some holes in it.. but usually not necessary. If animals, put a rock or weight on top. They won't last as long at room temperature. Wrap mushrooms in paper towel and put them in a paper bag.. all will last easily twice as long. Wrapping in paper towel or towel helps to eliminate moisture

I'm lucky to live near a local co op. The trick is to know when they discount items. Last night I picked up three bonnets of strawberries and one of raspberries all the ' irresistible ' brand which go for £3.50 each for 70 p each! Also, don't worry about items going off put them in the freezer or in cold weather leave them outside. I find fruit does go off quickly especially berries but that's a good sign. I start worrying when they don't go off after too much time. what sort of steroids or hormones are put into foodstuffs that won't go off after a week. It's criminal the amount of food my local throws out every night. They aren't allowed to sell it or let anyone have it. They aren't even allowed to discount it below a certain threshold.

Hi Sean, glad to see feeling better. Might I suggest that you cross off each item when you show it. Maybe that will help when trying to find an item. I know what you mean about Aldi's produce. It doesn't last very long. We do like the prices in Aldi; however, we usually buy our produce elsewhere. As we have 6 grocery stores in our area, there is always somewhere else to find what you need.

Well I'm from 🇨🇦 and I can tell you that we pay way more for our veggies that you are....that celery would be $3.69 ,the Cauliflower would be $4.99, the carrots $3.49.....( at today's conversion 1 pd. =$1.72 Canadian) for example..your eggs are really expensive.....I can tell because I always check....but I have my own hens....and now they are laying really well...12 a day...

Hope you feel better Sean, the last time I felt like that I had covid, it was horrible. I understand what you mean regarding food. I buy in sainsburys and was told it's so much cheaper in aldi and lidl, which it is, but their fruit and veg doesn't last longer than a day or two. So you can't do a big shop. I prefer to pay for the better quality. Don't get me started on the cat food. Mine will only eat the gourmet at £17 a box. You should get yourself a little bay leaf tree for the garden. I have had one in a large pot for years. It's so handy.

Sean I hope you feel better soon, if you don’t feel better in 3-4 days, check in with a health care provider?… if you don’t have any medications allergies, you can take Tylenol 650 mg every 8 hours to help break the fever and Advil for the body aches, lots of fluids and plenty of rest for the next several days. I hope you feel better soon my friend. 🙏🏾❤

@@valeriecoleman3588 tylenol is an American thing isn’t it? Is it out paracetamol? Either way it damages the body and mind. A temperature HAS TO GO UP to break the bugs it’s trying to fight. It needs to boils up, so adding layers help that ..not attempting to bring it down. All medical practicing folk do is offer drugs ..harmful. When I quit bringing temperatures down and heated up instead, they were fine within hours. When I used to take paracetamol and cool down they lasted well over a week..the body tries and tries to heat up to boiling point ..enough to crack the attacking bugs.

Sweating it out is a brilliant body response , unfortunately by taking lemsip and paracetamol, this stops the body getting to the high temperature it needs. But im glad you are on the mend. Remember to recuperte for at least a few days after you feel pooperly better. Read a whole book. Dont rush back to normal too soon your body takes 2 weeks to restore its system.

That’s very true. When we shiver & go hot & cold it’s a sign our immune system is fighting for us. I would take a simple paracetamol but I think the Lemsip & NightNurse medication have high doses of caffeine in so I wouldn’t take them. Yes the body definitely needs so sweat it out even though it’s so unpleasant🤒

i,m looking forward to a bit of warmer weather, cos here in the north of the uk, the winter 23/24 has been brutal & severe & realy cold & wet, i have no central heating.. Just an open coal fire that is lit with a feirce fire on every night & electric heater, upstair,s, but you can hear the wind howling & rain lashing it down atleast a few times a week, but between buying coal & wood, & paying for electric, its been costing over 400 quid per month, which is shocking, but i like to be warm, & as for food, i make everything myself & i waste nothing,

@thereisatide gives good advice for the storage of vegetables! The common denominator is AIR! Putting things into an airtight container will keep them crisp and good for many days, if not weeks! I've had sweet peppers and strawberries last for 2-3 weeks at a stretch. I use Mason jars (I guess Kilner there in Britain, I'm in the States) and save my mayonaise jars for this. But zip-loc bags, Tupperware, etc, work just as well.
Doing this prevents dehydration and also exposure to the ripening effects of ethylene gas.
I also shop at Aldi and love it! So much less overwhelming than the big warehouse size stores we have here, and easier to stay on budget. I think there may be something different between stores in large cities vs one in the more intimate setting of a bucolic English village.
I just found your channel and decided to watch as I also live alone -- and absolutely love the peace, solitude, and tranquility of it all. Peace.

    Hi Sean,
Glad you are feeling a bit better. A suggestion with your power bill direct debit. Pay a bit extra each month by contacting the company and that way you can build up a credit. Also instead of using your heater all the time, then is a heated blanket throw to put over yourself and sure the cats will like it to. It’s not a electric blanket you put on the bed but to wrap it around yourself. I bought mine from k mart but google it for over there. It’s so nice and warm and hardly use my split system for heat.
