Wow. This really frustrated me. I was born in 1993, and my brother-in-law, born in 1986, loves to talk about how horrible, lazy, narcissistic, and so on, Millennials are. But, of course, that only applies to those born after 1988 (the year my sister, his wife, was born). So this magically exempts him and my sister from being apart of the "entitled" Millennial generation. This is EXACTLY what this guy is doing. "Oh yes, this generation is horrible, but I'M not a part of it. It's everyone who's younger than me that's the problem." Ugh....
Yes and no. The difference is, he's using technology to define the differences among the generation. Your brother-in-law is using his own opinion which is based in emotion. One is not arbitrary and subjective. (I was born in 1984 and individuals were turning in our papers (book reports, essays) handwritten up until ~high school, to give an example.)
thehunt098 - same and I was born in 85. Most of what the guy in the video is saying is situational and based on technology available when you were born and how you were raised. Those of us born in the earlier years saw the advancement of tech and adapted quickly whereas (and as he said) those born later were practically handed it (and the older generations often think it was on a silver spoon). Each generation has its struggles and each end of those generations have their own opinion - I just wish people would put the pettiness aside and work together for the future before another civil war starts.
Bc it’s true 🤷🏾♀️ That cohort is immensely mislabeled. You cannot couple the common experiences and trending behaviors/attitudes of those born in ‘82 to that of those born in ‘92.. there’s an overwhelming difference
thehunt098 thehunt098 it’s not emotion, speaking by from his experience. And not arbitrary as his experience can be supported. If not, then science shouldn’t utilize people’s experiences of things and occurrences to measure variations.
Okay.... So the point of this is not to defend millennials, it's actually to establish the fact that he's above the younger half of his generation? That's the only main point defended in his argument.
He's highlighting something that is less talked about for Millennials. Some of us are in or around 30 years old. We're all not young 20s anymore. This last election cycle and how they reported Millennials' voting habits is a good example. They would cut off the older leg when reporting, neglecting those of us who are Millennials who 1: Voted 2:1 for Barack Obama, 2: Voting in bigger numbers compared to our younger end, which is in keeping with how we've been voting, and 3: Misrepresenting a whole generation's voting preferences in the DNC party nomination (When you add us in, HRC and Bernie were head to head, not overwhelming Bernie). I hope this explains why it's important to begin talking about Millennials getting older now.
thehunt098 but you still have to understand that millennials born in the 90s does not represent whatever stereotypes were thrown at the millennials. He is basically saying, “hey we’re in our 30s and we do not act that way. You need to know that there are millennials who were born in the 80s.” This wasn’t collective, he’s basically saying we’re millennials but we do not act like one.
I'm a millennial and I didn't get anything out if this speech. I watch these so I can have more things to say when I hear about our stereotypes. But this guy... I agree with what he said, but he started out with something good and divulged into something completely unrelated. I was hoping he would connect the talk about cities with the first part if the speech, but he did not. At all.
He comes across arrogant and doesn't really defend/explain the millennial struggle in comparison to the generation before us (i.e. inflation, student debt, etc)
Great Job, Ian! Hatw to break up the negative circle jerk but the point was Millennials think about the future and prepare for it far different than previous generations. We're not lazy at all. In fact we work far harder, far longer, for less money while carrying far more debt than any previous generation.
He basically said..ask not what Millennials can do for you, but what you can do for millennials. We are the largest generation with a high spending margin. Our children will be a product of us and most of us are entrepreneurs in spirit so if they don't give us what we want we will create our own thing. Number 1 we value education and knowledge.
I've been trying to avoid the basement for the past year so far I'm about consistently 2 cents away from going into debt and losing my apartment. Needless to say I'm going back until I have the skills to make a living.
Technically I'm Gen X (1973), but I don't feel like I'm Gen X. There's gotta be something in between. My generation (1973) grew up with Apple computers, Atari, Walkman's, CD's, etc. All of this new technology was coming out like crazy in the early 80's. It was a fantastic time! I was an early 80's kid. There was no major war going on either! No Vietnam and no Gulf War. I was in high school when the wall came down and the Soviet Union fell. People born around 1960-1970 had a very different experience than I did. Maybe these generations need to be by which decade you were born in or something.
Dude I was born December 1976. Generation X is from 1965 to 1980. Millennials from 1981 to 1996. Even the oldest Generation Xer would of been a teenager in the 80's. I was a teenager in the 90's. Majority of the slang from the 80's and 90's was Gen X.
I don't understand why there is such a desire to please the generations of the past, the progress of humankind has been forwarded by the differences in generations, being different and thinking differently is what leads to innovation. It frustrated me that there is such a movement towards a backward-orientated outlook, "playing with a stick" is the considered to be the 'best' way to grow up. To me there should be no shame in embracing technology and new trends - this is progress, why are we trying to run away from it? I don't see the need to have a pessimistic outlook on the world and change.
Right here with ya.....I was born in 1982 and I don't classify myself as a "Millennial". When I was 14, we did not have cell phones, and social media such as Facebook was not out until I was a Senior in COLLEGE. People from my time also have VERY different viewpoints and personalities compared to people born in the late 90's, and I don't consider myself a "digital native". In reality, generation boundaries cannot be defined solely by a "birth year" as demographers like to portray. If anything, they should create a "Generation XY" for people like us.
Chris Cruz Thank you. Yeah, "The Organ Trail Generation" describes us well. Other names for this micro-generation include: Xennials, Generation Catalano (that one sounds cool!), and The Lucky Ones (or Unlucky Ones...after all the confusion and distress of being a cusper). To be accurate, we are basically a sub-group of Gen X, since people born before 01/01/1983 are not Millennials (the 3rd Millennium started in 2001).
GenXer82 Is there any definition for Generation X/Y/Z hybrids because i have traits from all 3 generations, hard to explain but im kinda liberal person when it comes to race and gender things because i just dont really care about those issues much. But yet i got this oldschool patriotic side in me where i respect old traditions and way of life, and thanks to internet it was possible to study all these diffirent world views on your free time. I was born in -88 so i dont know where i fit it these generation things as i said i see all 3 generations in me at the moment.
Critical Mass Yeah, generations are very subjective, since everyone has different interests, values, and experiences...it's more based on trends (before 2016...the only generation I heard of was the Boomers). A "Strauss & Howe Millennial" ranges from 1982-2004, which is rather broad and in reality, covers Late GenXers, Gen Y, and Early Gen Z...so you safely fall under that. Otherwise, you can just call yourself an "XYZ Hybrid" or something. There's no formal name for this, but good question! (there are many different scales and none are set & stone)
He's right about kids... When I was asked by a company in Germany on my reasons to go work for them, my answer was: "You have a kindergarten in your office"
The non-point points are: millennials are diverse, some millennials are older and are acting like adults, it's worth thinking of millennials like half-full rather than half-empty money bags, millennials are urbanites and expert gentrifiers, millennials want to remake the urban space into a giant playground so that they can play with their babies and dogs.
Somebody born in 1983, (me), has a very different experience than somebody born in 1989, (ex-wife), or my ex SIL, (born 1992). I have a TV older than my ex-wife for fuck sakes. I more closely identify with GenX than I do the Millenials. The speaker even referenced it. Look up "Oregon Trail Generation". My SIL never remembers a time when the USSR existed. My ex-wife never remembers a time when the DDR actually existed. I was 6 when the berlin wall came down, and couldn't figure out why news was covering a demo project, since walls fell every day for new buildings, (6 year old me had no clue about the significance of that moment).
That people see millennial as people who don't contribute to society, economically and socially because we're always on our phones. What he's saying is that we do contribute and those who are young will grow up to have the needs like living in the city, dog parks, a good school and because we're so savy were not afraid to go looking for the best and leaving a car behind for it. That the way business is will change and should change to see us for what we really are and that's productive community members. Because what we buy and where we live is starting to make a difference in the economy and population. :) that's what I got from it.
Millenials are "tech savvy" like I'm "cable system savvy". I was rasied with cable TV, so I would HOPE that I now how the fucker works. (you'd be suprised at how much Millenial/GenX lap are 100% CONVINCED that they need a cable box). Try plugging your TV into the wall just like you always have. Do a channel scan. Be surprised at analog is still on. This is basic knowledge. Yet, most of society doesn't know about this. It's pretty simple. You aren't "tech savvy" on cell phones, you just know how to use them. When's the last time you flashed an unofficial firmware to your phone? (probably never). When's the last time I did? Mid-last week. It's not exactly hard. You think you're "tech savvy". Yeah, right. I'll sit you down in front of a computer with NOTHING on it, (won't even boot). I'd like to see you get Debian running on it from NOTHING but a USB bootable net install drive. Guess what I'm running? That's right, a custom Debian Sid install. You aren't tech savvy at all. You take it for granted. OOH, you can double click on a HDD to mount it on a preconfigured Linux install. Try getting it to that point, and dealing with it saying you're running Zesty Zapus (development branch) 17.04, and it's not even public yet all because you installed manually bash 4.4 and are running 4.9rc1. Then correct it to identify as Yakkety Yak 16.10 manually. Millenials are "tech savvy" like my grandmother thought I was because I could use a VCR as a secondary TV Tuner. You do not impress me. We figured this shit out and taught you how to do this. You discovered nothing beyond taking pictures of your fucking food. Millenials (the snapchat ones), make me yawn out of boredom.
this guy's speech in a nutshell: i'm a millennial but i'm not like the others! TED talks usually make me think about topics in a new light. this speech, however, is largely lacking... there's zero substance!
He actually stresses a very important point (indirectly): Being labelled a Millennial is so shameful that Millennials will create videos (even Ted Talks) distancing themselves from their generation.
I was born in 82. My whole life I had to work hard for what I needed let alone what I wanted. Sure I noticed lots of kids having everything they needed. But there were also a few I knew from my neighborhood who had no choice but to work for what they wanted. You don't get toys, you get chores. You wan't to go to college? Go to work and save for it. So this whole putting the millennials at blame is exactly that, laying blame. I had been in situations where gen x was blamed for having poor leadership skills and more of an expectancy that they should have the life they're parents had. I have worked for some lazy hacks twice my age that had told me my hard work was a waste of time, because I was born under the wrong circumstances. But that was my experience. This whole topic annoys me because I happen to just be at the beginning of it. Before my grandfather passed at 90 years old. He told me how families lived during the great depression. They had nothing, they found what they could wherever they could to trade for what they needed, and they never gave up. Take the time to invest in yourself. And beware those who would lay the blame on others as I see lately. Take some accountability and responsibility towards the situation and do something with it. There has always been someone trying to point the finger. And sometimes I see gen x as the generation of poor management and paranoia. I broke my back working hard for what turned out to be ungrateful management. I guess that's what happens when you have people lying about skills for the job, and then when they get there they can't produce. And then they get upset when a kid half they're age points out that's not how we were trained to do it.
It was never a divide between generations. It's always been a divide between the rich and the poor. It is those with power that leave a mark in history. The books we read in high school are not the pulp fiction that working class people liked to read, just as we assume the modern millennial is upper middle class, even if they are but a minority.
What? I thought this was an act of defending your generation instead of cutting off the tip, in which you coincidentally are included, and explaining why the tip is not as bad as the rest. Millennials aren't any greater than the other generations but they aren't any worse either. It's just natural that you are not as experienced and still full of excitement, expectations and faith in yourself at the age of 20. When you grow older, you grow wiser. That does not mean that millennials can't be smart, they just lack the experience. Give us time, we will prove you all wrong.
I don't know where else to say this... I'm ashamed to be a mellinal! We are 1/3 the working population. We sit still and watch the .1% take our futures. We sit silent instead of answering the call to defend our freedoms and our futures. Time is running out... my expectations are high... I am feeling low and helpless. Where is our John Lennon? We should be ashamed and we will get what we deserve. What do you deserve? Namaste...
I do wish that parents of millennials would start judging themselves and each other as hard as the judge us! (I'm joking, none of us should be judged, we live and learn and we all screw up at times!)
Why is this guy pretending to be 10 years older than he really is? I'm almost the same age as him and we had computer games growing up, mobile phones, and laptops during college. Don't trust marketing experts, they really are just liars.
I don't know if he was pretending. I remember in college in 2000 a professor kept telling us to get email addresses so she could email assignments, and no one wanted to do it. Most people didn't have cell phones until 2001. Absolutely no one had laptops in college, and I graduated in 2003. Things must've changed quickly. Oh, and I had a landline installed in my college apartment and got a used computer for typing and it had no internet. Things did change very quickly.
He started great... then, it becomes confusing. Maybe he was trying to point out that even though millennials are known to be lazy egoistic, etc...as they grew up, they have needs too which the community must adopt as well.
I too identify as being a xenial. I was born in 1984 one year after 1983, one year after they stop counting people as being xenials. This I take issue with. Listen people, they should continue to count people as being xenials up until the year 1986 not 1983. That is the year America truly began change, what with the NFA of 1986 and all. My dad was an Army vet, he left me a small gun collection and a small ammo collection to go along with it. Here in the PRC, the People's Republic California they took it all from me. Yeah Liberals are the true Nazis. I am a xenial, born after 1983, very pro-constitution, label me as conservative or liberal, whatever you want, it doesn't matter to me I'm non-partisan. That being said I know better then to vote for the party that is anti-constitution, the leftist stateist liberals. I've never voted Democrat in my life.
As someone born in 85 I don't see any difference between someone my age or a couple of years younger. I don't even agree with the "xeinnial" term but if people going to use that term it really needs to be extended to the end of the 80s,v 89/90 around there
I'm split 50-50. Born in 96 don't play pokemon go (But if they make a digimon version I'm will go) My country is in Asia. So while you were in " Millennials" age. We are in X (I think)
I didn't really understand why he was so negative throughout the duration of his speech. He put down younger people as if he was never a younger person. Millennials- whether on the older or younger side- have the most to bring to the table compared to other generations right now. He put down Austin or Portland as if they are bad places to live. I live in Austin and we damn straight care about our community and how our city is being built and childrens education and dog parks and everything else he mentioned. How did this guy get a qualification to defend this gen on TED?
I was born in 1998 and I grew up playing Halo ce on pc, the Windows Xp.👌🔥 But also, I'm not sure I actaully qualify as a Millennial. I've heard that Gen Z really starts at 1997, so I don't really know to be honest. And I hate skinny jeans and big, stuffy, liberal cities with a passion. I'm all about outside.🏞 I LOVED the ending of this video!
The speaker says 1980-2000 as the birth years for millennials, a real 20 year span (which is the 20 year span required to define generations), but the transcript and close captioning says 1982-2000. The transcript and CC is not matching what the speaker is actually saying and is misleading people who are hard at hearing.
I guess it really doesn't make a difference because the birth years for millennials would actually be 1983-2001 (since the 3rd Millennium started in 2001). But really...nobody born in the early 80's should be thrown into this generation. Obviously, we are not "digital natives" and we share different experiences and pop culture compared to youngsters in their teens and 20's.
Weird thinking of yourself as a millennial in the national sense when you're almost 30 and prostate cancer and gray hair becomes a thing. But mass media has us pinned down with social media? Kinda tiring.
He is an old millenial, of course he is gonna feel left out Whereas I was born in 97 Im 20 and I grew up watching Spongebob and with my computer, got my first cell phone when I was 7 and I live with my parents.
So u said i’m not one of those! I’m different i hate those stereotypes. those are (insert stereotypical things abt those who were born after u). Wow man ur logic is something.. let me fight back by doing exactly what’s been put down on me
so,what he tells in the end is that most millennials aren't as bad as next generation, but have nothing to do with the ones who fought wars so we can be free. no we didn't got you wrong. getting together and have a good time is not that much of a value. few millennials have the brain to at least see they are soft and spoiled, even that being their parents fault.
Just putting objects into prospective inside those damn squares in an instagram app for us is already hard, not because we are superficial but because we are very attentive to details. we are driven by passion and emotions when it comes to searching for a job. each of us is actually bussiness managers in our own little way. because gurrllll!!! trying to make your photo decent and being able to sell it by having likes on social medias is a very difficult job... just sayin ...
And what millenials are he talking about? I don't know any who grew up with tech and my little sister was born in the second last year of the gen and she didn't have tech in her childhood. I didn't touch tech until I started working and she didn't she was like 16. It's the generation after millennials that grew up with tech. My little cousins who are under 10 are the ones growing up with tech, everyone else didn't grow up with tech. I certainly didn't and no one around me and even people as much as 10 years younger than me didn't.
Dude you are the biggest millennial. “This is what I want” so the cities have to provide it. Want everything handed to you. You’ll end up moving to the suburbs for good schools lol.
This is terrible. What he basically did is defend those who were born in the 80s and slam those “punks” born in the 90s. Know what, hey. I’m born in ‘92 and I do not act like what those stereotypes say but if people dress that way, act that way, I don’t care. We all have self expression. I do not need to conform to ridiculous standards just to be accepted. I don’t have to get up the stage do a talk about how I am soo different from the later millennials. I thought this would uplift the whole generation but as I continue on, this is nothing different from boomers trashing children because of whatever idiotic observation they had. I had a lot of expectations from this talk because you’re very well-spoken but I was wrong. 90s Millennials, we’re in this together.
I just can't see these millennials surviving catastrophe like the Great Depression or world war, the way my grandparents did because they had real grit. Millennials would die if the lost internet connectivity. Give me a person over forty as an employee or a survival buddy.
If he was aiming for arrogance and giving a lot of useless information that had little to do with his point, then he nailed it.
Wow. This really frustrated me. I was born in 1993, and my brother-in-law, born in 1986, loves to talk about how horrible, lazy, narcissistic, and so on, Millennials are. terrie watson Yeah I agree. There is a difference between those born in the 80's, maby even the early 90s, then those born later on

Same here

I don't see the arrogance.

Point is that many of us millennials grew up without the internet and lived life pretty similarly to gen x and maybe to an extent, the boomers.
I've been trying to avoid the basement for the past year so far I'm about consistently 2 cents away from going into debt and losing my apartment. Needless to say I'm going back until I have the skills to make a living.

Banana Trish that would be cool

He's right about kids...
When I was asked by a company in Germany on my reasons to go work for them, my answer was:
"You have a kindergarten in your office"
I don't know whether to thumbs up for the Pokemon Go joke or the Oregon Trail nostalgia!
HE JUST PROVED HOW IGNORANT WE ARE. OMFG
What exactly was the point of this speech? He didn't convey a single piece of useful or relevant information... (I'm a millennial)
Omg I literally said the same thing, like wtf!

I agree; BUT wage/jobs to cost of living and public transportation to pedestrian friendliness is also important. Resources!
Laptops during lectures were not allowed when I was in college a year ago.
I grew up with Oregon Trail that had decent graphics (not like the ones he showed). Also, I don't own an Xbox 360 or Xbox One with the Oculus Rift.
We love cities until we have kids (if we do), then we want to give them the safety and space of suburbs.
Millennial Retention Strategy?! These are things every human looks for in a place to live.
Not with this debt lol
The Millennials are a very unsuccessful generation that spends their time in denial or blaming someone else.
Bud Bundy lived in his parents basement and he was going places. He couldn't even afford Oregon Trail.
Repped well for Milwaukee and millennials Ian
AYEEEEEEE 414 HOLD IT DOWN!!!!!
Namaste...
Why is the audience laughing? Are they nervous?
Great speach!
*speech
10:34 Education, parks and development are controversial?
How sad is that?
Was he from Milwaukee?
Oregon trail millenial here!!
Oregon trail GenXer here!!
I do wish that parents of millennials would start judging themselves and each other as hard as the judge us! (I'm joking, none of us should be judged, we live and learn and we all screw up at times!)
he just proves the narritive is correct. A lot of wind and no substance...
I'm a gen-xer and I got a lot out of this presentation. You other gen-xers know what I'm talking about
He started great... then, it becomes confusing. Maybe he was trying to point out that even though millennials are known to be lazy egoistic, etc...as they grew up, they have needs too which the community must adopt as well.
9:40 When he said "safe space" I got triggered.
This is a bad talk. When you start dividing people by specific years, you drop the ball. Late 20s to 30s is different then those in the early 20s
gamma21285
Mauro Morelli Polis ???
gamma21285 not to say the late teens in contrast to the early 30s
+zach caldwell ikr. There's a huge difference. Late teens to early 20s are more inline. Just like the late 20s and 30s are pretty much the same.
Look up Generation Jones. It's not that bad of an idea, it just highlights some differences.
Born in 96 don't play pokemon go (But if they make a digimon version I'm will go)
My country is in Asia. So while you were in " Millennials" age. We are in X (I think)
the ages are just based on year, nothing else.
Also Asia is much different from the western world.
Why to all millennial men have this insatiable need to wear a peach fuzz beard?
I was born in 1998 and I grew up playing Halo ce on pc, the Windows Xp.👌🔥 But also, I'm not sure I actaully qualify as a Millennial. I've heard that Gen Z really starts at 1997, so I don't really know to be honest. And I hate skinny jeans and big, stuffy, liberal cities with a passion. I'm all about outside.🏞 I LOVED the ending of this video!
Gen Z starts in 1995. But you're a zillennial (95-early 04).
I hate bike lanes
Weird thinking of yourself as a millennial in the national sense when you're almost 30 and prostate cancer and gray hair becomes a thing. But mass media has us pinned down with social media? Kinda tiring.
Share a car?!? I can't. And I'm close, in Waukesha County.
I'm a 95 millennial
He is an old millenial, of course he is gonna feel left out
Whereas I was born in 97 Im 20 and I grew up watching Spongebob and with my computer, got my first cell phone when I was 7 and I live with my parents.
1. Are you actually a millennial
2. Is the USA really the best nation in the world xD
So u said i’m not one of those! I’m different i hate those stereotypes. those are (insert stereotypical things abt those who were born after u). Wow man ur logic is something.. let me fight back by doing exactly what’s been put down on me
So you went the long way around to say....... we want someone else to make the citys and virtually everything the way we want. .
he just doesnt get it,its nothing but attitude, and millenials are in a desperate need of an attitude adjustment
so,what he tells in the end is that most millennials aren't as bad as next generation, but have nothing to do with the ones who fought wars so we can be free. no we didn't got you wrong. getting together and have a good time is not that much of a value. few millennials have the brain to at least see they are soft and spoiled, even that being their parents fault.
I see you. You have beard. You're wearing skinny jeans. I think you just described yourself dude
Why exactly do most millenials want to live in cities??
Just putting objects into prospective inside those damn squares in an instagram app for us is already hard, not because we are superficial but because we are very attentive to details.
we are driven by passion and emotions when it comes to searching for a job.
each of us is actually bussiness managers in our own little way.
because gurrllll!!! trying to make your photo decent and being able to sell it by having likes on social medias is a very difficult job... just sayin ...
Sounds like he's whining because someone forgot to tell him that there are exceptions to every rule. lol
Well, guess who's getting published? Yes, baby boomers, thus the bad press on Milinneals.
I actually had to pull over to turn you off as I was driving. Waste of time!
OMG this made me laugh!
Dude you are the biggest millennial. “This is what I want” so the cities have to provide it. Want everything handed to you. You’ll end up moving to the suburbs for good schools lol.
This made absolutely no sense.
Millenials 😂😂😂😂😂
These comments gave me cancer
Always speaking from a male perspective. ALWAYS. So annoying
probably the worst TED talk i've ever watched
This guy is definitely a yimby
I was born in 1999, and i had the exact same experiences... so what?
this is the most pointless speech.
This TedTalk sucks.
this is completely pointless to me
boring.. but typical
I just can't see these millennials surviving catastrophe like the Great Depression or world war, the way my grandparents did because they had real grit. Millennials would die if the lost internet connectivity. Give me a person over forty as an employee or a survival buddy.
Great speaker, terrible speech.
great so you started your own business. I am young baby bomer and have never met a productive millennial
