    From what I heard, you can upgrade the T480 up to 64 GB of RAM, 32 was listed at the time of release of the laptop because 32 GB modules weren't available yet

      My brother in Christ, what would you possibly do with 64 GB ram on this laptop? The CPU will be the main bottleneck, so you would never be able to take advantage of all that RAM. you might as well throw your money into the sea.

    When I got my T480, it was pretty high end, with the only expectation being the lack of Nvidia graphics. It has an i7-8650U, 32GB RAM, and 512GB NVME SSD out of the box. It also had a IPS touch screen but I upgraded to a very bright and higher quality non-touch display.
    The T480's design and internal construction is nice. I replaced my T480 with a brand new palmrest which required taking the entire laptop apart. It was very easy to get down to the motherboard and chassis compared to the older "classic" ThinkPads. I also replaced my display panel and I rebuilt the entire display assembly (which includes the WiFi antennas, the webcam, and the LED light for the "i" in ThinkPad.
    However, the plastic clips that are used on the base cover (rear cover) also tend to break off, even when using plastic tools and brand new parts. For example I also did replace the base cover, but as soon as I removed it again it instantly broke a clip. So I think the build quality on these newer ThinkPads is not as good as it used to be. I guess that's just because it's designed to be very thin, and it is nice and small for the features it packs.

    • @HaisteComputerRepair
      @HaisteComputerRepair  11 месяцев назад +1

      I agree about the clips. The T480s build quality is improved and the clips are much stronger, making it easy to access internals without worry. I am daily driving a T480s with NVIDIA MX150, i7-8350U, 40GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD. It's solid for what I use it for. 40GB RAM is novelty, I definitely don't use that much. If the dedicated graphics were strong I would go further and modify more, but I am thinking about switching over to a P51 ThinkPad that I also have in stock.

    • @saf751_
      @saf751_ 9 месяцев назад +1

      I never broke the clips off weird enough coming from a newbie. I was trying to open my laptop to check the ram and the process was way too easy. I just unscrew and unclip the battery area and after that it immediately opens up.

    i suggest you use some fps games for testing, since some competitive title like valorant, csgo, war thunder, etc still able to run on integrated graphic with lowest-low setting on 720-768p resolution
    but you still could add gta v and minecraft as a niche game to test
    still, a good and informative video on an old but gold thinkpad t480
    Nice 👍

      Thanks! I agree with you, but there is only so much time in the day. I will be making a T480s video soon, so I can test out GTA V on integrated graphics. I actually have my own personal T480s with NVIDIA MX150 (2GB GDDR5) dedicated GPU that I will be making a video on as well. I have an external SSD with Steam, so that is my go to. As for Valorant, FortNite, etc - those are titles I have to download each time I want to test on a new system. Along with their launch software (Epic Games, Riot). So, it becomes a bit of a process as they do not seem to take well to being loaded on to an external SSD and moved from system to system. This is where Steam gains some heavy favor from me.

I've purchased, and returned, more recent Thinkpads, including the Carbon and Nano, as well as the T14s series, which replaced the T4xxs series, and none of them had a keyboard that was nearly as good. Possibly even upgrading the screen, though mine is the 1920 x 1080, so it's good enough. I plan on also "modding" it with a dual heatsink since it seems to get decently hot (70° - 95°) with just light gaming. I did replace thermal paste but it's still pretty warm. I've seen mini heatsink mods on the pipes as well, but it might only drop a few degrees so it's not really worth it. Dual pipes on the fan should cool it down quite a bit.

    you are running the os on a Sata drive, while having storage on a NVME? That`s the other way arround no? Also, there is a caddy that allows you to plug in a m.2 nvme up to pcie3x2 in the place of that Sata drive, and increse the speed on that connection. But already having the second drive on an m.2 nvmw pcie3x2 in the format 2242, Id`highly recommend you to load the os onto that drive and use the sata ssd as the storage. Responsive times withing the OS will greatly improve

      I mentioned in the video you could use the WWAN port to install either m.2 or nvme ssd and listed off some options. Boot drive, storage, etc. These came to me with the 2.5" caddy, so that is how I sold them. Some context: in my work, it is not worth the added cost to purchase a separate caddy for NVMe and be left with 2.5" caddies. If a customer wanted this, no problem. But, I sell as budget friendly as I can and leave further modifications up to customer request. I may miss some things in my videos, so thanks for commenting in a friendly way :)

      It really depends on what you plan to use it for. There is an increase in clock speed and cache, but that could be negligible compared to the price difference (theoretically). Perhaps there is slightly more battery life to be had with the i5, but this is not confirmed with me. I daily drive a T480s with an i7-8650U with the dedicated MX150 NVIDIA GPU and it performs well. For what I generally use it for, I would also be fine with an i5 and integrated CPU graphics.

      Well, that's only one piece of the puzzle that is CPU generations. A Pentium 4 had 3.8GHz clock speeds, but that of course would not at all compare to an i5-10400 with a base speed of 2.9GHz. The T480 will have the benefit of 4 cores 8 threads, while the 6th gen i3 will be 2 core 4 thread. Also, sometimes business class laptops are about efficiency, low or no fan noise, and long battery life. The intent is not always to have the beefiest hardware, just functional for it's purpose.
